Upgrade ideas, floating some ideas

Recommended Posts

I'm getting together ideas for my next build, which is a dual system in the new Phanteks Luxe 2 but having a hard time commiting to a $1500 GPU. The build is going to be water cooled no matter what, so here are my ideas so far. My current system is below and does ok in VR with the Rift S but I'm looking to improve it. Anyone with experience with the 5700XT or 2080 Super?

Idea 1

MSI MEG Z390 ACE $250

i9-9900 $440

64GB Corsair 3200 $330

MSI RTX 2080 Ti Sea Hawk $1,500

MSI MPG Z390M Gaming Edge$187

i7-9700K $350

32GB Corsair 3200 $165

MSI RTX 2080 $690

Idea 3 number 1 because you'd giving the middle finger to Intel and Satan approves (price).

As far as I know the motherboard market for the AM4 socket is quite confusing right now, to keep you from overspending watch this

You get very good boards even in 200 to 300 range, the 300+ range often has stuff which is really overkill for what you would do with your system. I'm going with the 210€ Gigabyte Aorus Elite before years end, solid and without the "unnecessary" stuff.

Thanks for the video, I found a website that talked about the 570 chipset boards and it had similar information. I've decided on the MSI Prestige due to the shear number of USB and excellent VRM for Memory OC. I've also decided on the below build, now that I've seen all the info on the 3rd Gen AM4 CPU. The PCI-e 4.0 for the SSDs and excellent Memory OC was also a big factor.

MSI Prestige X570 Creation $500

Ryzen 7 3800X $400 <--- May go with the 3900X if available

64GB Corsair 3200 $356

MSI RTX 2080 Ti Sea Hawk $1500

Total= $2756

ASUS ROG Strix B450-I $150

Ryzen 7 2600X $237

32GB Corsair 3200 $178

MSI 5700 XT $410

Total= $975

Probably two as both systems may not be running at the same time.

That is a nice Tower Case, I like the EEB and E-ATX capabilities !

If you opt for the 2nd motherboard, can you install a rad topside or is this a either/or ?

If your rad space gets tight, this may be a solution, Mo-Ra3 420er size, with 4 x Noctua 200mm it is ultra silent and could cool both systems. The pump would mount on the rad externally as well, very good looking and in the end cheaper than multiple internal rads. I have a 360er with 4x180mm and would never change to internal rads.

I just glimpsed over the ideas and couple of questions spring to mind. Why wouldn't you mix a Ryzen CPU with an Nvidia GPU? Also, $500 AMD board? What for?

As the AMD doesn't have a top-end GPU contender yet, how about a Ryzen 3700x and a 2080Ti with some mid-range board option?

i386DX40@42 MHz w/i387 CP, 4 MB RAM (8*512 kB), Trident 8900C 1 MB w/16-bit RAMDAC ISA, Quantum 340 MB UDMA33, SB 16, DOS 6.22 w/QEMM + Win3.11CE, Quickshot 1btn 2axis, Numpad as hat. 2 FPH on a good day, 1 FPH avg.

DISCLAIMER: My posts are still absolutely useless. Just finding excuses not to learn the F-14 (HB's Swansong?).

Annoyed by my posts? Please consider donating. Once the target sum is reached, I'll be off to somewhere nice I promise not to post from. I'd buy that for a dollar!

The motherboard choice was based on VRM setup, the use of PCI-e 4.0 and the number of USB ports available as well. The choice of using the 2080ti as opposed to the 5700 XT is based on VR performance and right now the 5700 XT doesn't offer the increase I'm looking for. If a custom PCB for the 5700 XT comes out that shows promise I might opt for that. The 3900X choice was having more headroom for OC with higher memory clocks as well. I need a system that will last a few years instead of the little upgrades I've done in the past.

These two videos, primarily Jays video is why I chose this case. It offers the options I was looking for at a pretty reasonable price.

Look into binned and pretested Ryzens, there are chips who can achieve stable 4.3 Ghz on all cores for a small uplift in price. And since those were tested running in - you guessed it - Prime, you might even get them higher (and stable). I'd take a pretested and binned 4.3 GHZ 3700X over a "random" 3900X any day. 4.3 all core is really, really rare.
