I'm getting around 90 fps especially in the beginning. The image fidelity is so so with SteamSS 100%, and much better at 150% but the fps will drop which makes it go down to 45 fps (due to motion smoothing/reprojection). Interestingly, motion smoothing seems to turn off automatically whenever the framerate hits 90.

EDIT: Well, the Vive/SteamVR system works differently. I can disable motion smoothing in the option but no way to disable reprojection (at least in the current version, AFAIK) which will always kick in once fps is <90 and the effect on frame rate would be similar to having motion smoothing on.

EDIT2: Ok thanks to the gentleman that told me how to disable async reprojection I was able to do this (It's quite convoluted with Vive/SteamVR, you have to bring up DisplayVR View window, click on that and press SHIFT-a). In this mode, I'm seeing 75-90 fps with this test scenario and above settings (75 when flying low towards buildings). However, whenever the frame rate dips below 90 the stuttering/tearing occurs when moving my head around inside the cockpit which makes the game rather unplayable since it induces nausea and sense of disconnection from the world. I can now see why Steam doesn't want you to mess around with reprojection setting. This though might be good for Valve Index at 144 Hz with reprojection on since 72 fps will be utilized effectively.

Now the open Beta has been released to Stable I have done a comparison, I have not noticed any major differences, might be slightly faster. I am not sure the enhancement has been released to this version so if not disregard.

It does seem a bit smoother in general, but it is very slight, so could easily be placebo effect.

I´m one of those who see a major improvement (although there´s always room for more, its just a comparation as before). I have the Vive, sometimes i get 30 fps but it is a lot fluid. Most always in 45Fps. I know that without my system specs and testing its difficult to understand. I´m sorry i don´t have room available right now for installing stable version to test. 1080Ti Zotac, 32Gb Ram 1800Mhz, M.2 SSD, 2x SSD´s, 1 OS SSD, I7 4790K 4.4, Liquid Cooling, and HTC Vive. Hey everyone,

In the Open Beta before last, we fielded the VR optimization; however, we have been getting very inconsistent results internally after building version 2.5.5. Some are seeing significant improvement; others are seeing a reduction in VR performance. We are seeing the same results with clients over the past week or so. As you might imagine, we are trying to pin down this discrepancy. We are unclear if it is based on drivers, VR set, graphics settings, VR settings, missions, etc. As such, we are asking for your help!

Using the TF-51D Instant Action mission Flight Over Tbilisi, please provide your average FPS in VR for the first few seconds in the current Open Beta. Then, run the same test in the Stable version that does not include the optimization. This allows us to determine the delta. Please turn of ASW! Please include in your report:

- FPS for both tests

- System specs

- Graphics settings

- VR settings

- Type VR set used and driver version

Please, please, please keep posts to the data requested without off topic and commentary so that we can easily sort through and analyze the data. Posts that cannot follow this direction will be removed.

Note: if you are getting 45 FPS in both tests, then in all likelihood, you did not disable ASW correctly.

Thanks

Hi Wags, I apologize for the stupid question - but how do I get FPS to display in VR? I've been trying for a while and cannot see it displayed anywhere. If I unplug VR and run DCS off the normal laptop screen, I can get the FPS counter up in the corner like expected. But as soon as I go back to using VR, I'm not seeing the counter anywhere. Is it accessible somewhere else when running VR?

System HW: i9-9900K @5ghz, MSI 11GB RTX-2080-Ti Trio, G-Skill 32GB RAM, Reverb HMD, Steam VR, TM Warthog Hotas Stick & Throttle, TM F/A-18 Stick grip add-on, TM TFRP pedals. SW: 2.5.6 OB

I think I'm late to this party cuz it seems like last entry was a while ago so not sure if ED have not given up on VR optimizations(hope not cuz without VR there is no DCS for me). Anyhow here is my test results with latest beta 2.5.5.41371. I am getting 60-70fps with UH-1 heli on normandy map(visibility set to low) using pimax5K+, 8700K cpu, gtx1080ti grfx. Mind you I have steamVR render resolution set to 50%.

I think this could be a reason why so many are getting different results maybe that steamVR render res is set to higher/lower or at default, which is auto (and so steamVR decides what res you get based on hardware).

I though i post the following in the forum thread.

I just want to say that dcs world run better in VR in 2020 than in example november 2019 and i dont know why or if there was an update or something.

I know steam BETA vr was updated several times, and maybe that is the reason.

Or maybe an nvidia driver update in 2020 did something.

I have a pimax 5k+

Its a bit difficult to say the excact fps since it variate what map and where you fly. But in generel I now have 45fps almost always even above big citys.

I can see planes further away, example the tanker i can see from 8-10miles away ( in f16 ) , i dont think i could do that before

( at least it was more difficult ).

in general the VR feel much better and more smooth.

Anyway, thank you. ;-)

PS. the above could be that I now get electricity from another source in my home and pimax tracking somehow is better ( i live in an older house.. for some strange reason not all wallplugs in the house can be use for pimax 5k it simply wont turn on.. I am not electrician, but maybe there are some noice/resisatance or the hz of the power need to be adjusted or something. )

Ryzen 3900x

nvidia 2080rtx

Steam VR BETA ( automatic settings, nothing tweaked or changed )

Piplay software (pimax vr software ) I turned on parallel projekction, and i changed the graphic slider ( super sampling ) to 1,4 to get a better image. ( cant remember the excact name of it )

I have a hunch that my better fps might have something to do with me now using another wall power plug since pimax 5k is pretty power sensitive.. I need an electrician to verify some things if the power in my house need to be tweaked.. example i cant plugin pimax in any power wall plug, it wont turn on everywhere in my house. In 2019 i got power from my "computer room"... today i get power from my kitchen via a long cable... not 100% sure if that is the reason why i have better performance.

I have the same performance as previous 2.5.6 iterations. Caucasus its unplayable, it sames something related with high CPU usage and terrain loading (huge stutter when use TV sensors maverick or TGP, looking to the horizon).

Persian Gulf at least don´t stutters with TV/TGP zoom cameras looking at horizon. There must something in caucasus that downs performance related with how terrain is loaded in 2.5.6

I was hoping ED had resolved those issues thorough today´s patch. Its the same. I don´t undersand how VR area could take this hit in performance, most modules are unplayable in VR, specially on Caucasus.

Hello Wags. So, I am one of those having some serious Trouble with VR performance. I have not make the metric yet in exact numbers, but im going to provide some feedback on the things i have notice.

My specs:

-Ryzen 7 2700X

-16gbs ram DDR

-SSD

-RTX 2080

EDIT: Im using the Oculus Rift S headset.

The thing is i found some nice grphic settings for VR, and since patch 2.5.6 the performance with those settings dropped dramatically. The main Issues were:

-Cockpit textures started to blur a lot whenever i turn my head quickly.

-Overal FPS drop.

-Unplayable FPS drop when doing a low pass and whenever i fire guns in F-18.

As i said, i did not change a single grphic setting. One lad form my squadron suggested me that i just turn off every shadow setting, and for my surprise, most of the time the FPS improved A LOT! But, i still have some blur efects on cockpit (less than before) and i still have really low fps whenever i fire the F-18 gun (no matter the altitude). I hope this can help you and provide some useful info.

And i hope this can be solved soon, i really want to fly again but i can't do it in this conditions, it's been a month by now and i miss it a lot =(

Hello and sorry for not being able to post FPS results yet.

I want to clarify one issue first.

ASW disabling.

It's either a pain or a gamble. This combined with the requirements of making sure ASW is properly stopped makes the testing for many irrelevant.

Let me explain.

1. There is no way in DCS interface to turn off ASW iirc. No tick this to have ASW off. You have to do it on your own if you can.

2. ASW can be turned off via Steam VR or Oculus software/tray tool. I use Oculus Tray Tool and I have it OFF by default and also enforced OFF with 2 profiles, one for DCS World.exe one for Updater.exe.

3. ASW start randomly when DCS starts no matter the settings in OTT (oculus tray tool). How do we know this? ASW makes images gelly like when turning your head and while this can be difficult to see on an ideally working DCS Install... it is super easy to spot on a not so excellent working one... namely mine that runs from a... HDD. When running DCS from HDD it loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and so on and so on at infinitum... which make the game stutter and freeze often and when it freezes for few seconds you can simply see the shapes and textures bended and distorted because of ASW.

When the game starts it shows in VR for minutes the splash screen with the sky etc. When ASW is OFF the splash screen rectangle is either intact or sliced when the game freezes (several times per load) but when the ASW is ON the edges of the splash screen rectangle are mangled and sinuously distorted as a clear sign of ASW being on.

4. ASW status cannot be easily checked when in game! namely. You set the OTT overlay to show the status of ASW and you simply cannot see it over the game... it's under the game and to actually see it the game needs to... yep... freeze! When the game freezes while loading a mission or starting first time (yes thanks to a HDD) and you move the head the game being frozen can't show you anything and while looking up you basically see the black void behind the game (frozen) and there... while looking up you can see the ASW status overlay. And yes, it's ON when you see the shimmering distortions mentioned at 3. or OFF when you don't. But this is the only way (for me) to really really check the ASW status.

No matter the status of ASW the FPS cannot jump (on my system) above 40 (half refresh rate of RiftS my HMD)... I know... Doh LOL... If ASW is ON... no chance in hell to go close to 40. If ASW is OFF I might see 44fps sometimes but is rare and I have to find a patch of empty sky. And I have 4 frames ahead freedom of calculation set in nvidia driver so... that 44 might be just that. True... my system is no top notch especially the video card.

Just to be cleared. I have no VSync ON, not ingame, not in nvidia driver settings general tab nor in DCS profile and also no external app like RIVA Tunner, nv inspector running in background forcing Vsync in any way. Also no FPS limit by those programs or in driver general or DCS World profile. None!

It would be nice to:

1. have a very clear way of turning OFF ASW ingame explained in first post.

2. Have an option to actually enforce ASW off no matter the HMD or VR software you use (steam VR or Oculus VR)

PS. My frame rate is low but still relevant imho. As an example I play with almost all settings maxed up because at this level of framerate/stuttering the differences are minor.

Intel I5 4670k stock speeds 3.4-3.8GHz

That is odd, I have no problem turning ASW on or off via the Oculus Tray Tool or the keyboard shortcut with my Rift S.

I have though found I prefer having it on.

As this friend in here says, i have disabled the AWS in the oculus tray tool. The performance improved A LOT. I still get some fps drop when doing a low pass, but much less than before, and cockpit textures no longer Blur and decompose, BUT i am still not as happy as i was with performance, overall when doing low passes it seems like a small motion blur, but i have it disable, it seems more like a blur caused for the FPS rate being irregular.

ANYWAYS, DISABLING AWS IN THE OCULUS RIFT REALLY IMPROVES PERFORMANCE

After a few more test. I have also activated the VSYNC and im quite happy with performance now. So recap:

- Ryzen 7 2700X

- 16gbs ram DDR

- SSD

- RTX 2080

- Im using the Oculus Rift S headset.

My Performance was really poor after update and i have solved most of the problemas by:

- Turnin ASW off in Oculus Tray Toll

- Pic VR qucik Set Up and modify next:

Textures: High

Terrain Textures: High

Civ Traffic: Low or Off

MSAA: 4x

SAA: 2x

Aniso Filter: 16X

In game Screens: 1024

Vsync: On

-TURN EVERY SHADOW OPTIONS OFF

With those things i have a good FPS performance. I still have some blurry textures on ground objects but they don't seem to have an effect on FPS. I now have to do some stress test in extreme missions with lots of units working, but overall i think i am quite happy now with the results.

As a side note, i am not sure how much of this has to do with ED or with occulus itself, because the patch was launched nearly at the same time as an occulus update. But it seems that the things causing trouble are both from the RIFT S googles and from some ingame graphics settings at the same time.

(Sorry for my english is not my mother language)

EDIT: I forgot to mention. Although my performance have increased greatly, my settings are lower than they were before.

Have a look at this post here

it seems using CLI executable along with server:asw.off truely enforces no ASW, far better than any other of the tools.

I believe tools like OTT actually make use of the same interface or API to set different modes. I made a voiceattack profile to be able to switch modes during a game with a simple voice command. This works in all other games as well, not only DCS.

Using the CLI you can also show the performance overlay showing you framerate graph etc.

I can even set the pixel density using a voice command, however this not work for DCS during a game. In other games this does work.

If you’re interrsted I’d be happy to share the profile.

OK. I'll give it a try. Does the command needs to be sent after each reboot? 10x .
