Help me upgrade my PC?

Recommended Posts

Put more money in the GPU, in the end, the GPU is the deciding part.

Rather stick with your old HDD and case, etc.., for a month 2 or 3 until you can exchange those too.

a 2070 or 2080, or 5700XT was better

Looks better from the GPU.

Why is shipping 14,50 on the coooler ? That is very expensive.

yes it does.

I think you know that you do make one or the other compromise but that rig will have ample power for high settings in DCS, 2k and likely also 4k and VR.

If you can, skip things that you can add LATER without buying it twice, like a 2060 now and 3 months later a 2080...that would be stupid. Rather use the old tower for another few months, skip the SSD for now etc... if money is tight. Get the CPU you need, the GPU you must have and the RAM that is needed, those are hard or impossible to upgrade later on w/o taking a part out that you cannot reuse, maybe sell.

But the above combo will do it.

Do not forget to run this whole stuff off a good PSU, preferably with Platinum grade efficiency.

YOu can buy this in 1 or 2,3 months, just dont forget it...unless you have a good one already that is not worn out yet, yes, they do wear out over the years and cause all kinds of troubles.

My tip was a Seasonic Prime Platinum, I use a few of those as well and have only the best to say about them in daily use.

For a little more, you could go 3rd gen Ryzen wit same board, say a R5-3600 or 3600X

You could postpone things like SSD or case ( ok, lots of work to put in new case..but worth it)

For a little less, you could go with a PSU with a 7 years warranty :smartass: "All of the capacitors are 105°C rated, Japanese brand, to ensure solid power delivery and long term reliability".

I built a new 8700K system with 1080Ti last year, 32gb ram at 3000mhz and I used to have the 2600 (K version with 980FTW card and 1600mhz ram in 4x4 dims. Honestly, you're looking at doing a total new build.

But mainly, consider doing a 250gb SSD M.2 NVME for OS only and put everything else on SSDs and use a 1TB HDD for storage of photos, documents, stuff. My DCS runs great on a dedicated 500gb SSD and I have 3-4 other SSDs with STEAM Games, Bohemia Interactive games, and one 180SSD is just for STEAM Utility and other stuff like Discord, CombatFlite, CoreTemp, HeadTracker, Open Office, JSGME, and any other utilities that would normally clog up your CDrive.

Today, the only thing I'd do differently is get a 1TB drive for DCS for the swap space needed for updates. And read up on your potential MoBo, if you put a bunch of NVME M.2 SSDs, you may lose PCI or SATA slots for other drives.

www.pcpartpicker.com can help you place the items together and spot any potential incompatibility. Looks like you already have a good start!!

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I thought the R-7 2600x would be better then an R5 - 3600x? Or does it not work like that?

I already have a Samsung 500GB SSD in my old PC, so I will be using that also. I should have the room? I don't think I could stretch to a HDD as I'm at the top end of my budget

Any other thoughts?

Would this be an up to date PC to run the programs like DCS. FPS etc?

No, the 3600x beats the 2600x series in IPC by a mile

...and follow Demon 's PSU device

Great for DCS or any other sim/game or other sins ;)

Unless I'm missing the obvious, his list is showing the 2700x which is an eight core part, while the 3600x is a hexa-core part.

I'd still go for the 3600X, though, of course (since the DCS won't make use of the extra two cores, while it will benefit from the IPC increase), just wanted to clear why the OP was confused with the suggestion to downgrade to 3600x (presumably).

I swapped out the CPU for the 3600x just to see the increase in price, but partpicker threw me a warning message....

Warning - Some AMD X470 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

<Me, no idea

It is compatible, you will need to flash a newer Bios onto the board.

There are two methods for this board since it does NOT have a BIOS FLASHBACK button, which would make it very easy to do it yourself.

1. Get a LOANER CPU directly from AMD for free. Flash with that compatible CPU and then send it back to AMD. Article link here: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3409053/amd-has-a-loaner-program-for-third-gen-ryzen-pcs-that-wont-boot.html

2nd Option is from CCL website at cclonline.com ( UK )

Motherboard BIOS Update Service

Purchase a B450/X470 motherboard, Ryzen 3000 series processor, and our BIOS Update Service, and we'll update the motherboard to the latest BIOS before shipping for FREE (normally £9.99).

Either buy the CPU also from CCL and then it will be for free, or buy the CPU elsewhere and pay them £9.99, whichever is cheaper considering postage for the CPU as well if ordered elsewhere.

I'd do the CCL deal and get both from them.

I was also reviewing the motherboard, i forgot to post this earlier...

Now i'm no IT guru, but i ran a comparison between the two and the only thing I can see different is the B450 does not offer DDR4-3466

I'm no overclocker or anything like that, but am i paying for something i'm not going to use? as thats a saving of over £76...

Thanks!

No,

the components, like VRM ( Voltage regulation parts ) are usually of higher quality, same goes for LAN, cheap is RealTek, good is Intel. Again, the devil is hidden in the detail here.

On paper they look very alike but if you can afford it, get the X470 ROG Strix.

There are more differences. Maybe the most important is the lower count of PCI-Express lanes connecting components.

If you plan to run 2 NVMe down the road, or use many USB, the X-series offers more.
