What could be reasons for not dropping them?

Sometimes Jester simply says: no can do, and he doesn't drop them.

Happened to me several times.

Over-g?

can't remember, but most probably yes.

should master arm block it?

manual is not clear to me, but I think master arm should be set to ON, should it?

Yes; to jettison anything in the Tomcat, including tanks, master arm needs to be on.

If you are pulling Gs, banking or pitching too much, he won't do it either as it would compromise the safety of the aircraft. Straight and level is the best way to drop them.

OK, this sentence should be written to the manual in that clearness!

Back to the situation:

I was in a 10° climb.

I remember I had ~9g on the trailing pointer from pulling the aircraft hardly before (which is why I thought over-g was a limit). So the second part of the question remains open ...

Anyway, I have to replay the TRK file of this particular flight to check if the master arm really was set to ON. My weak :music_whistling:

Thanks guys so far!

I will ask if over-Ging could break the jettison procedure, although I doubt it. I presume it was more likely to master arm being off. Done that mistake couple times myself.

How about adding "drop tanks" to the text in the Jester wheel, so it reads "2&7 (drop tanks)" for newcomers, that have not yet memorized the complete station layout? Maybe add "front" and "rear" to the tunnel stations, while we are at it?

In real life I guess I would tell my RIO to "Jettison the tanks" or "Jettison the bombs", rather than "Select stations 2&7" - "Jettison selected stuff"... ;)

If you go into the WVR submenu of the JESTER menu, you have a command for dropping tanks only. Jester will then also reply along the lines of "pickle tanks". :)

ok, guess I never was in the WVR submenu and would never have searched there, but good to know it is there.

Well, getting shot to pieces by an overconfident AAA, limping home and wanting to reduce drag, is a very(!) good reason for me...

This got me in a turning fight last night. Was wondering why they wouldn't drop, leveled off...KLUNK....alrighty then.

Makes sense at least.

…..BTW Navy aircraft do not have drop tanks...., They're AUX tanks, and you better have a REALLY good reason for ever jettisoning them. They are limited in supply and spares take up a LOT of room on the ship.

Absolutely...thank you TurkeyDriver! The difference between SIM drivers and Game Players is when they drop the tanks or ordinance...and cheers for making this a point!:pilotfly:

Emergency Use Only I guess!

While we're at it you should also watch where you drop'em - certainly not on your mothership or near urban areas.

Hahaha, yes!

:metoo: until I discovered this by accident ...

It seams logic to me from one point, but totally unlogic form another point of view.
