Realistic Missile Launch Mod

Recommended Posts

I extracted the missile launch sound of the R-73 from the video mentioned in this thread

http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=24867

Just replace the original MissileLaunch.ogg in the Sounds/Effects folder with this file.

(Please scroll down to version 2)

kind regards,

Raven....

alright, I have it confirmed... with new sound file I don't hear any sund when launching AIM-9 or R-73 or R-27ET (interestingly they are all IR?)

R-27's AIM-7 or AIM-120 still work fine...

I replaced again the original file and all sounds are there again.

I am on WindownXP Pro SP2 (and all updates) E6600, and SB X-Fi.

No longer active in DCS...

Version 2 (tested)

I did some experiments and found out about the reason for this strange behaviour.

I needed to resample it with other settings. The original sound file was 22050 Hz mono with 45 Kbps, while my first mod was 44100 Hz stereo 65 Kbps.

Now it's fine, even the volume matches nicely.

Please try this one:

It sounds different somehow. In the video you hear Woshhhhhhhhhhhhhh, not only the missile igniting but also the sound of the mottor roaring away from the plane. In this sound it sounds (sorry for redundancy :D ) like your firing a plasma gun in a space SIM.

THx for the effort, and keep it up!

Original and sound sample

Well,

here are the two files for you to compare them:

R-73 is a 9 sec segment in wav-format from the video footage (MSL launch at 4,8 sec), and MissileLaunch.ogg ist the sound sample created for Lock-On.

@Pilotasso

I can't hear that rocket engine roaring away, the jet engines are far too loud.

Nice work GS but you gotta remember that sound was taken from inside the cockpit in that video so there is no wooosh sound. Woooosh sound can be heard when outside but LO can"t tell difference between the two and is using the same sound clip.

Why do you tell me ? I am fully aware about this fact.

so there is no wooosh sound.

It was Pilotasso who claimed that he heard a whoosh sound in that R-73 video. I told him, that I did not hear it that way, only the short "popping" launch sound.

Woooosh sound can be heard when outside but LO can"t tell difference between the two and is using the same sound clip.

I don't think so.

There also is a soundfile MissileLaunchEngine.ogg, which is the launch sound plus some rocket engine sound added to it. And there also is a third file called MissileEngine.ogg, which is the sound of that rocket engine without the launching sound.

For outside view, it appears to me that MissileLaunchEngine.ogg will be played when a missile is launched, and for the tracking view F6, the rocket engine sound of the third file will be played as long at the rocket engine boosts the missile.

Well all I gotta say is great work but It would be awesome if there could be realistic sounds for the different kinds of missiles available like inidvidualistic R-77 , R-60 and other sounds.

You would have to change the source code to do that. For the time being, there is only one sound file for all missile types. :(

The difference between the two files is the static present in your ogg file after the transient rocket engine "woosh". If you removed the static noise, it would be identical. Let me try to put in into terms that might better explain (or worse, perhaps :)).

On top of the "woosh", there's two distinct pitches with an interval of a fourth, sounds like F ascending to B-flat or thereabouts. The launch transient occurs on the lower pitch, and is gone when it ascends in the original sample. In yours, there's significant static noise once the pitch ascends. Get rid of that static noise and I'd wager you'd have a better match to the original sample, especially once you factor in an appropriate engine noise.

Well, I did'nt add static noise to the sample but will look at the ogg file again.

Thanks for your hints (dunno what you are talking about with B-flat and stuff but will manipulate the sound apperance a bit). It does not sound exactly like the original launch sound yet but I think I can tune it somewhat better...
