Will we get a ** F-14 Development Update: January 2019 ** ?
I think they mentioned something last week about some sort of update. But I don't think it's important. Let them focus on their work and we will get it when we get it. You know it will be good too so it will be worth the wait.

He types to slow, to me at least. I'm like 3x as fast with a mouse. It's it's crazy slow.

Ever text in car? Dial a phone? Use a calculator? It doesn't take that long to type a key. He inputs too slow, period.

Ever seen a normal passenger car producing more Gs than 1G even in corners? :D Sorry. I think we should not discuss that further :)

Ah but where is the RIO getting the co-ordinates from? You're assuming they're reading them as text. If they've got to read them off a chart first, is it really that slow?

*lobs hand grenade*

The time makes sense if he's looking at the chart for literally every press of the key, like this:

*Looks at chart*

*Put finger on chart*

*Looks at panel*

*Puts finger on panel*

N

*Looks at chart*

*Put finger on chart*

*Puts finger on panel*

I'm using VR and almost have to do this exactly, but I can remember N 42 03, reference chart, 37, E, reference chart 053, 38, reference chart 26.

I don't know how he's coded, because I'm not privy to that information. But they've said it takes him time to find switches and and what not. Cool. That makes sense. But it sounds like the time it takes for him to initially find the panel is used for each key press, which ain't right. If you're holding your hand on the panel, it doesn't take 2 seconds to press the next button. I equate it to trying to type on your phone (like I'm doing now) and trying to type on a palm pilot with a stylus. All just my opinion, yes. But listening to a few examples I've heard, his typing is too slow.

Is the pattern of entry really important compared to the total time taken though?

The point is, before saying it's all too slow, is considering that this isn't necessarily as simple as just punching in the numbers.

The other thing is, is there even a keyboard in the RIO pit? he may have to go some round about way to enter these values, and that may take extra time.

That's the F-14D RIO-cockpit, not the B's

I think the speed should be dictated by what the plane is doing, if you're maneuvering i'd expect it to be slower

I mentioned it before, there may is more to consider than just hastily punching in coordinates where you are about to drop a 1,000 pound bomb on an inhabited building?

I at least would double and triple check every digit I enter before dialing in the wrong coordinates.

I am not familiar with the typical workflow of a RIO, but he could even divert his attention to the radar or other vital stuff, between typing a digit...

I know that, which means there will be even less to work with back there than that. still, no "keyboard" on the B

I fly a Gulfstream 550... when I type in the MCDU, I do so very slowly and deliberately.... especially when we are given oceanic clearances. When the rio inputs Data, there's potentially lives in danger... just food for thought.

*edit* I'm not trying to pick a fight here.. just saying I can understand why someone would input data slowly here.

It produces more Gs on a bumpy road. But for the split of a Second. The shaking oh the car makes it hard to type in the navs on the screen. I think the typing on the vid Is perfect. And I think you don‘t think about a new nav-point in a highly dangerous situation.

That one is likely a -D, looking at those panels.

Anyway, one thing to keep in mind about the CAP is that it's pretty far from a keyboard or even a modern aviation input panel. The pushbuttons themselves are heavy requiring more force than a computer keyboard and indeed makes more of a kachunk sound when pressed.

This said, it's not inconceivable that we might revisit the time between presses but the comparison to a normal keyboard is somewhat lacking.
