Storm of War - DCS WWII / Historical Server

SoW server is now back up - on the Open Beta. Mods are no longer required. The experience with running a modpack was not entirely satisfactory.

There are two missions on rotation currently set on June 10 and June 11 1944 respectively. I intend to add more missions which wil tack the normandy campaign from a day-to-day basis, or even two missions per day.

I've painstakingly added correct Suqdron codes and period-looking aircraft registration numbers to all the Allied flyable aircraft now.

German ones will follow in the future hopefully.

Each mission has multiple airfields for each side to spawn, so you don't need to worry about being harrassed geting airborne.

Target status can be accessed via the coms menu, using the F10 option. This will tell you if one of the mission objectives has already been destroyed or not.

There AI aircraft, in limited numbers. So even if you are flying alone you still need to maintain an aerial look out.

SRS is also running on the server, with relevant channels for all aicraft. See mission briefings for details.

Weather and lighting conditions are non-default, so expect cloud now and then as well as missions closing out during low-light conditions, or starting just prior to sun rise.

Could you make a short demo video on how to select targets and find them.. I used the menu but didn't find the target. I didn't see them on the map, maybe I missed something..

Hi,

Yes I can make such a video.

However, in the interim, maybe this will help.

STEP 1:

Using the coms menu select the F10 option.

The list of targets will be provided in text format.

Each target will be numbered (i.e. TARGET 1, TARGET 2 etc) and the menu will tell you if the target is "ACTIVE (i.e. not yet destroyed) or "INACTIVE" (i.e. it has been destroyed)

You want to go after an "active" target.

STEP 2:

Read the mission briefing (press "escape" and select briefing option).

Scroll down through the briefing until the section where the ground targets are described (usually under the "secondary targets" section). The text will describe each target, as well as give some information about where it is located.

For example it will say something like "German vehicle column on the Caen-Bayeux road, approximatley 4 miles west of Caen".

In some cases a grid reference or a lat-long coordinate will be provided.

DOES THIS HELP for now?

What times of day and week is this server most active? I have dropped in a few times all alone, which made for some fun ground pounding, but would like to fly with others. I am in the US, so I suspect the server is empty often because of the time of day I usually drop in (Friday evenings and weekends CST).

Currently server only runs once per week. Sunday nights, EU times.

It might to back to 24/7 operations once the FW190A8 comes out in early June.

Remove the AI Phil and all labels too, promote the server and let it run 24/7. We need a counterpart to Burning Skies. If we get folks to play on your server we could get a boost for WWII MP in DCS.

Bomber AI is ok though, fighter AI makes people leave.

I know, servers are expensive but only Saturdays helps nobody. You could make us pay somehow, I don't know ...

Again fellas, spotting might be hard but labels destroy WWII MP servers. If we loose the part where we have to search or can hide and sneak the whole thing is a mess. Whats the point just flying to the next label furball. It isn't that hard, P 51 flicker over forrests, sometimes you loose a contact, sounds good to me ...

Labels have been off for a long time. The visuals/ spotting is Vanilla, and has been for months.

I am going to keep the AI in though, for the following reasons and under these conditions:

1. If the AI is in, at least when ED fix the DM/AI we will already be set to use them. Eventually I would like to only have Ground attack, recon and transport AI on the server. Howeve, we don't have the AI assets for that so I have to use what we have now, and try to make the best of it.

2. SoW has always been about providing an atmosphere and not just a dogfight. The AI adds to the general environment/ atmosphere.

3. SoW is also about trying to provide a place for "single player" people to try multiplayer. You don't have to do PvP on SoW if you don't want to. It should be possible to do something meaningful (like patrols, bomber escort, ground attack etc) without necessarily meeting a human. In order for that to be possible, AI aicraft are necessary.

4. If the AI is too hard, their skill levels will be reduced. The AI is mainly there to keep people on their toes and provide an "active" war environment. They're not there to make poeple's life impossible. I will respond to feedback and reduce the AI skill if people find it impossible to defeat them.

Sunday, not saturday :)

It's not a cost issue at all. Runnning the server costs me almost nothing. I use my old gaming machine and I have a fast connection. The reason I only run it on Sundays is beacsue at least then I know people will join. However, if I was convinced there was demand during the week, then I would run the server 24/7 again.

I also have plans to add pilot/ player statistics, but I'm still looking for the lowest-impact way of doing this.

As above, labels (nor custom dot-labels) are NOT activated on SoW.

Keep on Phil, Your vision is the right one... We need atmosphere.. PVE/PVP mix, not a Unreal Tournament PVP arena, at least until we will have players who can y bombers, recon and so on...

I've now put the server up with a mission rotation. If it manages to attarct some players then I will persist with it. However, if there is no demand, I will revert back to just running sunday night missions.

I plan to leave it like this until Mid-June to see if the 190 A-8 has an impact.

This is a cool idea to add stats! I thought about it a lot and decided for myself that DCS is not suitable for big battles. But its very good for ordinary flights. I would like to have the usual patrol flights on the route from the tablet.. When they tell you your course, your altitude, and your flight time. And you don't know if there will be bandits on your way or not. Patrol flights, reconnaissance flights.. Finally just training flights to get acquainted with the terrain.. What pilots usually do.

And it would be very good to have stats with a reward for regular flights, not just for downed fighters. DCS also has a unique ability to configure system failures. May have a small probability of failure is needed for those who want realism. Is it possible to tie several airfields to one own task? Not to select the job, and to have a job near the field..

I recently found myself in a field at night. There were no spotlights, no signal lights. Is there something provided to help with the landing?

I also really liked flying over the water. I was never able to find the ships from my mission. But it was very exciting. Above the water have to navigate the instruments, it makes me feel the atmosphere of those flights..

Hello Phil

At times it must seem to you that you're a bit of a John the Baptist character, crying in the wildnerness, but if you build it right then the people will come. You are doing a great job, personally I watch all your videos and appreciate how you help others to gain further accessibility into the world of warbirds.

You're not alone in this and I would love to be able to take advantage of the SoW server 24/7 as I have an unusual day/night shift pattern that enables me to do so.

Please keep it going mate

Thanks, however I get the feelng that "dogfight" is all that people want to do, and they won't venture online unless others are also dogfighting. It devolves everything down to the most basic level, unfortunately.

Me and my Squadron we seek a WWII experience, the most real possible. So if we take off an found some enemy we fight, if we must go for a ground target we go for it and if, like in reality some times happen, we didn't find nobody we flying back and see You next time... This is what I call a "WWII experience"

Yes, I very much have that feeling too and I think it represents the desire that guys, who have a limited time available to participate, to get 'down to brass tacks' straight away rather than involving themselves in the full spectrum of a mission's activities. Certainly, I prefer the latter but the pursuit of the former manages to quench the thirst of those more time limited individuals.

So the solution must somehow involve making it more dynamic and stimulating to occupy oneself in the complete flight from startup to shutdown, as you do in your videos. I can see the ethos behind Storm of War clearly myself but how you portray that vision is the critical factor.

I think the essential quality of mulitplayer is teamwork and squadron effort but unless exposed to these elements then many new virtual pilots simply assume that it's dogfighting prowess that is the pertinent factor.

Perhaps a sign of our times Phil. Your work is a beacon of optimism for myself and I am sure there are many others who feel likewise.

Hey philstyle, I have tried the server in the last couple of days; I really like it. You may have found another regular ;)

PS. The AAA is ruthless! I was 'sniped' and shot dead while casually passing well above Isigny. On a different server I can strife more or less safely, here I need to pay a lot more attention. Frustrating, but I like the challenge thumbup.gif

AI Wingman (with P51) did not want to follow me on the runway. I took off and waited while wingman drove to the opposite side of ayrfield. Is it possible to add a German scout at a high altitude, closer to the coast of England?

All,

I plan to update the server as quickly as possible on Wednesday night so that we can run missions with the new FW190 A-8 model. I expect to have something up around 19:30 UK time, assuming the patch is released around the normal time of late afternoon.

The server will go down tonight (tuesday night, June 4th) in preparation.

Please note that we also have a new SRS address, which should be more stable than the one we have been suign for the past few weeks. The new SRS hosting is kindly provided by Redline.

alpha.digitalcombatsimulator.world:5002

The new SRS address is also stated in the Server name, which you can read from the multiplayer serverlist.

As usual, server updates are also posted on the SoW forums here: http://stormofwar.org/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=29

Server update delayed, obviously.

I will keep an eye on the patch situation witha hope to install if it gets released today at all.

If it is delayed until the weekend, I might have to delay updating the server for a week or so, due to imminent private-life committments.
