PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

Recommended Posts

Hey Neon,

Sorry to hear you have having an issue. Its probably just a conflict with an old device driver still on your system. I responded with some possible fixes over on the discord.

If we cant get it sorted immediately, I will just ship you a new one, with a return label and postage paid, for the bad one.

Let me know how you make out over on the discord.

Thanks,

Miles

On a possible positive note MS installed an update and when I fired up VR at least some of the new "virtual" screens were disabled (I had to still disable screen 5). So maybe they fixed that. But its a single test.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

Hey Miles!

Having just reloaded the Huey (I wonder why??? :D) I have noticed that when I'm reaching up to the overhead switches, I find it quite difficult to get my cursor to appear.

I then have to lower my aim to get the cursor back on and can then usually get it on target to click the appropriate switch.

Is it reaching the limit of the pre defined cursor limits? And if so, do I need to reset them?

It shouldn't be the FCU losing the HMS as my head is looking up (so thereofor the HMS is still in line of sight with the FCU???).

Any thoughts?

Hey Harlikwin, I thought the Steam VR patch fixed that a week ago? did it not for you?

RatCatcher, When interacting with overhead panels like the Huey, your FCU can be very close to the HMS sensor. So your FOV window to capture it, is much smaller, and it also becomes more sensitive to movement the closer the FCU is to the HMS.

I mitigate this by fully extending my arm when interacting with the overhead panels on the Huey. This helps increase the FCU to HMS distance, and make it easier to use.

Let me know how it works.

Talk to you soon,

Miles

Hey Miles, Gotcha! That makes sense, will give her a go!

Slightly OT (OK very Offtopic...) Currently my hovering and general control close to the ground is OK(ish) but at altitude when wishing to descend, I have this tendenacy to adopt the profile of an anvil and plumet to the earth.

Any thoughts or advised reading in regard to "controlled" descents you may have?

Thanks!

No, but its resizeable, so you should be able to use on your tiny little monitor.

It should start out full screen for everyone, so you can see the menu and reference on the sides of the DCS window.

Good luck,

Miles

Hey Sirrah,

Do you have a significantly reduced mouse movement area because of your high res reverb and low res monitor.

Nope, not at all

Never had a situation that my PointCTRL cursor wasn't able to reach something.

Well, sometimes I do struggle a bit to get the cursor on a clickable item that is close to me (e.g. the Harrier ejection seat activation handle). But that's probably just because in those cases the FCU falls outside the HMS tracking area.

Also, the DCS VR mirror image on my monitor is automatically scaled in such way that the entire VR view is visible, so I'd think there would be no reason for the cursor to have less reach than on a high res monitor

Thanks Sirrah,

We have to talk. I meant to ask you a few questions, because I thought you were doing something different with scaling that may be helpful to all VR users that use a mouse, not just PointCTRL. This is usually only an issue when The headsets vertical resolution exceeds the fixed monitors.

PointCTRL's FOV is wider than VR headsets, except for the Pimax in the horizontal. We actually only use about 50% or the HMS sensors vertical FOV.

Anyway, the standard mouse cursor and PointCTRLs vertical movement limits are reduced in the DCS window.

I think by changing the displayed resolution of DCS, to get something more representative on our monitor, of the the image we actually see while in our headsets, we may be able to get full vertical movement.

I have done this before, but as usual got sidetracked and forgot about it before I was able to come to a conclusion.

I was planning on changing the DCS resolution on the USAF VR Labs that I installed PointCTRL on. Not because of reduces cursor movement, but by changing the DCS resolution the IP can have a larger and more representative view on the fixed monitor, of what the pilot is seeing in VR.

This is not my idea, DeshMindER showed me this on discord, and said he does it for his YouTube videos.

I think its worth investigating more for those that have vertically challenged cursor movement in VR.

Edit: Damn, I forgot about full screen mode, its been so long since I used it, Have to check that out.

Any advice or suggestions from anyone would be great,

Thanks,

Miles

I'd be glad to help you, but honestly, all I ever did was connecting a 15 year old tv screen to my pc.

I even had to use one of those HDMI to VGA adapter cables, because the tv didn't have HDMI :P

I would have ditched 2D all together if it weren't for the fact that it's not possible to do everything in VR (just yet)

I play with DCS windowed

But I did go full screen a few times and I didn't notice any change in VR with the PointCTRL cursor

Interesting... we will have to voice talk in discord.

I know there a lot of folks that wish the mouse cursor would go lower in their HMD display.

The new FCU looks good Miles. Great work.

Regarding development, are you still working on adding buttons to the headset? Any chance it will eventually be possible to purchase only firmware update for that and build the button box ourselves? Mainly to lower lead time and shipping cost.
