Hi Alpenwolf thanks for setting up the player export! But its disabled again and jetseat is not working anymore. Did it reset with the merge of the open beta and the stable version? Thanks for all your work the missions are great and the rear aspect only setting is really interesting!!

Well, realistically, in DCS MP it is 90% lone wolf action. That is a problem, but that is the ugly truth.

 

Honestly, I don’t have many hours on this server, but when I was there, SRS was usually silent and no human GCI. Next week I’ll make sure to be on comms, when I get home. (Hopefully in a nice new and shiny MiG-19):thumbup:

 

Yeah that's true. I also don't have many hours on the server(and the rest of the public servers) because of that reason. Normally I will join when I have someone with me and we will have some specific objective to try to achieve.

 

I find Discord very useful for helping team work or at least to team up with someone or get known with other people flying the server. It is unfortunate that Alpen doesn't like it too much :)

Yeah, a war in central europe in the 70s or 80s would have been totally different to Vietnam, with a dense and potent SAM coverage that makes going high suicidal. Instead there would be more space horizontally, as Europe is much bigger and broader than the slim Vietnam landspace, so AAA coverage would be much less of a factor in Europe than it was in Vietnam. Also enemy air would be much stronger than over Vietnam.

 

Because of those factors, the doctrin for european forces was to conduct strike missions at treetop level, which they developed dedicated aircraft for (Jaguar, Tornado, Viggen, Su-24, ...) and trained a lot.

 

I think the A/A weapon selection is on point ot the era, also adds a lot of fun, as earlier planes has a big chance now, they barely can do stuff before with the all aspect missiles

Well, during the Cold War or in Nam there were fairly few areas to fly low level, skimming the mountains for hours, while waiting for prey to show up and overfly ya, because it was just too dangerous (unless you were a Sandy Rescue Prop); you would be inside the AAA envelope most of the time.

As such most fighter packages would fly in the 15’s to 25 thousand feet, in order to safe fuel and be less vulnerable, which is the motive the SAM was invented in the first place...if you watch some of the YouTube shots from your server, the “Ace Pilots” always seem to find their unexpecting prey by skimming the terrain, which I guess is ok, but reality is that they would not be able to the Cold War days. And as they fly around until they burn through their fuel (low level flying is a lot less efficient) they just land on a dirt road and restart in another plane...

I’m not sure if that is the idea you had in mind...

Trust me, if we had a Vietnam map with planes of that era, I'd exactly do that and Red would be mostly on the defending side.

Please please please do not make it another airquake server. Weapon selection based on service years is a nice addition to realism. Weapon selection for balancing not so much.

Airquake how? I don't have one scenario that would let that happen. Only if 51 players join the server at once which was the case yesterday. Otherwise, never.

One thing I am trying to understand is, why Migs have to fly low on the first place ? Any objective can be achieved from a high altitude. Fly high as 2 or 3 packages - Strike, escort, cap. Strike can do high altitude high angle dive to deliver ordnance on target and climb out quickly. AAA and other AD should be placed around all objectives(by mission designed and/or placed by players in RW) to protect from low flying aircraft, so defensive CAP can stay high.

 

Awacs might detect you but F-5 will have to climb up there to catch you and go out of his comfortable zone also your awacs will detect them. Going into contrail will make f-5 visible from longer range.

Which is why I take radar missiles quite often, fly high, drag me some bandits into the sky, fire my R-3R's and get me some kills. Happens very often. The MiG-21 has more options than the F-5, but instead of forcing the F-5 to fly high, MiG-21 pilots end up flying low where they're vulnerable. Maybe because Blue outnumbers Red most of the time, so they feel insecure flying that high.

I think we need more Shilkas and Vulcans all over the battlefield area, and remove the "air quake" zones:

 

Create one battlefield area where opposing ground forces meet -or- a single sided objective like:

 

1. mission red strike - blue defend

2. blue counter strike - red defence

 

something like this. would be much more interesting if we don't have mirrored objectives.

In addition, focus on one strike area, we we can actually find each other even without our limited radars (this a more a gameplay request)

 

Other than that:

I can only connect via IP, in the server list I have a Ping >500, ingame it's max. 110...

 

But anyway, good fun server!

I have two missions, where Red is only defending and Blue is attacking; Ossetia and Supervision. Other missions like Elbrus and When The Mountains Cry have multiple TA's, separated by good distances to exactly avoid having an airquake kinda thing. Other missions; like Battle For Maykop and Springfield have one battlefield, like you've suggested. Not sure, you know all the missions I host, unless you mean something else.

And if they don't, no big deal, it ain't effecting your game's performance, so I don't understand why people find it difficult to join TS and SRS before joining the server.

TeamSpeak was there first and everyone used it. Why should I change the format? It's called "Team" and "Speak". We only need the tool for chatting. Discord is a tool, where you can do anything and also chatting. The word discord itself is not some coincidence. People get distracted and before you know it, they start sharing some files, images, porn, talking and sharing all the shit they care about and others get annoyed, who only showed up to discuss their tactics. So instead of having a constructive chat with your team members, you end up having a discord! Anything manipulative, cunning and mainly for bad reasons disgusts me! Say all the good things you want about Discord, Facebook, Twitter and all that shit, I'm of a different opinion here. I'm not forcing anyone to use anything, my friend. I'm only saying it the way I see it :smilewink:

Good point. If the fix is not released then I might take 'em all out of the missions. It's just frustrating to do that, when maybe a couple of days later the fix arrives. Feels like lots of work for almost nothing.
Looks like a WIP damage model for the C-101 has been released in today's open beta patch.

I'd strongly recommend a better channel framework to be developed for traffic/gci + enabling extra radios (simulating hand held radios) for flight comms.

What do you mean exactly? Any suggestions maybe?

May you guys help out with this and provide some multiplayer tracks?

 

Red, I have tracks from that specific day in question showing the issue. I will pass them along to Hiromachi. (Sadly I am on a trip now so it will be a couple days before I am back in front of my machine but I will do it ASAP).

I can't speak exactly to the first part of Shadow's post but I would give a +1 to the extra SRS radios. While a second radio in an F5/MiG 21 isn't fully realistic, it is more realistic than any of the other voice applications and is easier to arrange on the fly. By that I mean you can set up an intraflight frequency easily with a random player you meet in game and no one has to tab out to start another application, while at the same time not clogging the AWACS/GCI freq with flight communications.

Channel "01" is the guard frequency on the MiG-21 150mhz by default

 

edit: on this subject "no report waypoint pass" would be handy for the AWACS

I'll see if there's an option that says AWACS should shut up about his waypoints :smilewink:

This^^, From the first time I used discord, I realized that this is not the right communication tool to work in teams. It is true that he has a voice, but everything else is as if it were an extension of whatsapp, with the same problems porn, chat and BS, I think that for DCS, the best comm apps are teamspeak and SRS.

Important announcement:

 

 

The current server provider is going to stop providing service for the Cold War 1947 - 1991 server due to private matters on his side. This came a bit unexpected. I tried to turn it around and get this service providing cancellation undone, but unfortunately it was futile.

Over the last days, I've been trying to find a good alternative. I'm close to sealing a deal with a new server provider in Europe, but this time around it's going to be a bit costly. It's good service from what I hear and read, hence the price. Therefore, and I know it's very unpleasant, and for that I sincerely apologise, but I could need your donating hand in this.

I was happy providing service to the community without asking for donations, but the circumstances have changed. Please, don't feel compelled to do so for I will keep providing nonetheless. Only if you could spare 10-20 euros a year. Quite many players fly on the server from what data I've gathered so dividing the burden into so many small amounts of money should be very helpful.

I've just opened a PayPal account for exactly that purpose. Every cent you donate will be for DCS public services only.

Oh that's a bummer. I hope you'll get it sorted out ASAP, love the Cold War server. Did you talk to ED about this, however?

 

By the way, Alpen, is it possible to turn one of the current missions to be a night mission? With the moon in the sky (full moon), the visibility is still pretty good, you can see pretty much everything, especially afterburners!

 

Also, the Command and Conquer mission has a bit of an issue with the ATC, the blue AWACS frequency is the same as Krasnodar airfield, and sometimes it gets jammed due to the traffic on the runway.
