new rigg for a newby?????????

Recommended Posts

all S!

current system: i7 cpu 965@3.20 GHz (8 cpus),16 gig ram ddr 3, nvidia gforce 770,one hdd 500 gig,windows 7 home

for a fair price i'm offered:intell i5-7600k,16 gig ddr4,msi gforce gtx1070,ssd 240 gb with windows 10,hdd 2 TB

two questions for the specialists:

1) can i install dcs 2.5 and all the modules on that 240 gb ssd ( i think the needed free space is not enough to install the lot)

2)if i install dcs 2.5 and all the modules on the hdd (space enough), what will i lose on performances and FPS on the whole, or will the better cpu and vidio card compensate the install of dcs 2.5 and all modules on the hdd and not on the ssd

thanks for reading this

First things first: I am not a specialist but I think I have a nice rig and I can help you.

1) If I am not wrong the whole DCS with all the modules and maps should take around 100Gb, so you should be ok if you install on it only OS and DCS, but I suggest you installing other programs on your HDD.:joystick:

2) I've bought an SSD only to play DCS normally, so I REALLY don't think installing it on an HHD is a good compromise. I can say this especially because DCS is a simulator with a LOT of things to load, even after you join the server so there is a lot of Data reading from your hard drive, for example when loading textures in you VRAM ecc... So this can cause you to have a bottleneck and an huge FPS loss. Imagine only a GPU that needs to wait an HHD to read the textures and to be loaded on its RAM: if it doesn't happen quickly your GPU can't render a scene.

Last but not least, I think you are going to wait AGES before entering a multiplayer server.

I have just done a fresh Windows 10 and DCS install* and that comes out to ~150GB

Is it possible to option up the SSD size or add a second SSD or M.2?

If your considering VR you might want to option up the GPU

250GB can be enough, but you may run out o space once you add more modules and maps.

You can always add another NVMe drive ( recommended ) any time in the future should the need arise.

For now, if you have less than 15 modules and not all maps, yes, it will work. If you own them all, NO, you then need a 250GB for DCS alone.

Never ever try DCS on a HDD, skip that experience. Just don't :music_whistling:
