I saw the new caucusus map and compared that with the strait of hormuz teaser. What a difference in trees. Please drop in speedtree before launch.

Many thanks ED! :D

It's a lot of work adding Speedtree to the maps, it's TBD if they will be added to SoH.

It does look much much better and if they are able to use it with little fps impact I really hope they add it to Normandy. I do appreciate that would be a hell of a lot of work.

I hope they at the very least add it to SOH!

Sith, thanks for the link - those trees look great.

....but can someone explain to me (like I'm a 4 year old) what Speedtrees actually are? Are they just really nice looking trees that you have to meticulously add in (I know, TBD) and if so, what does that mean as far as a load on GPUs? - In a general sense of course.

I don´t see the need, there are more trees in one small section of a small forest in the Caucasus that in the entire Hormuz area.

Very cool software, you can create your own types of trees fairly easily with the tools they have.

Here's a video creating a map, then being able to adjust down to each tree.

Used that years ago for a movie but never realized they made it into game engines. Nice!

Did Wags say in his Hornet live stream that Caucasus uses Speedtree, and then adding "as do all the other maps" (or something to that affect). This would imply that Normandy will have it too when 2.5 hits, no?

Nope. It’s a very time consuming proccess. It will be discussed by Ed. I think New maps will have speeltree.

He did, wasn't sure if it was a misstatement or not though (it's tough doing a live stream while preoccupied with flying a complex jet, so would be understandable if it was). Haven't seen or heard any discussion/confirmation since that though...also don't know (assuming it wasn't a misstatement) if he meant on launch, or in due time.

Edit: awful typing on phone lol

I remember going to the Speedtree and Lomac booths at E3 back in 2003-2004. Now Speedtree is in all kinds of games and films, including Avatar. It is a marvel and hope it has continued use and success in forthcoming and existing DCS maps... maybe we will even see their amazing grass!

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the tech ported to Normandy as soon as possible, because right now the trees over there are unfortunately somewhat lacking both in performance and dynamic lighting&shading department. I hope the fact that the map is a 3rd party endeavour will not be an obstacle here.

  • 1 month later...

think about license, maybe ED does not own the tech...if the area has only bushes and a couple of trees, that tech is not important quality<>profit wise. Speedtree is a fast rendering assets method over quality, don't know the details but thats how I look at it :)
