Saitek X52 - I need a little help

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I bought Lock-On Gold last month, but my old joystick made trying to aim at anything just way too frustrating (plus it’s really hard to aim, while constantly trying to find the right key on the keyboard).

Plus this sim is HARD! You need some sort of degree in rocket science just to get through a mission. It’s really no fun getting creamed all the time just because you can’t fly (or aim) well enough . . . so I went back to MSFX (with its horrid FPS studders).

But I was really good this year, so Santa put one of those sexy Saitek flight control systems under my tree. And it works sooo much better than my old Sidewinder that I decided to try flying the A-10 again.

But since plugging in this gismo, I’ve been spending most of my free time just trying to program the darn thing. At first I tried using the profile that came with it, but could never figure out what button to push.

So I decided to make my own profile. I really had no clue what I was getting into, nor did I know at all what I was doing at first (no blonde jokes please). I just kept trying different key combinations, and then ran the sim, only to find that it usually didn’t work like I wanted it to. But eventually I finally got things set up so that I can now control the A-10 pretty well and was actually able to hit some of the stuff that I aim at.

Anyhoo, I’m still having issues with some of the twisty knobs (rotators?) and can't seem to get the zoom to work without being all jumpy and it only zooms from in the cockpit.

I tried assigning zoom (NUM* and NUM/) to the throttle hat, but when I try to zoom out, I get beamed miles away from my plane, and zooming back in just slams me right into the paint.

I assigned zoom to the slider on the throttle, but did it from the games input options, not the SST programming thing. If you use the rotaries, make sure you have a band in the center ident that doesn't have a key assigned to it, otherwise your controller will constantly be sending a keystroke to the game.

And lastly, I HIGHLY recommend picking up a set of rudder pedals for the x-52. I hated the twisty stick and since flying with pedals it makes lining up those strafing runs on the A-10 a thing of beauty!

Thanks, but that is the way that I set mine up. The slider zooms works in the cockpit view, but not in outside [F2] view. And in the cockpit the view is now jumpy, like it's constantly zooming in and out a bit.

I now have the rotaries set up in the game inputs, which I read somewhere was the best way to assign them as well.

Not in my budget at the moment (i.e. broke college student) :(

General advice for programing with the saitek profil editor

My experience at this issue is that when i change the key commands in lockon with his own editor and use also a custom saitek-profil, I quickly lost the overview and other commands that worked fine could easyly be messed up.

Therefor I recommend to delete/clean up all joystikbutton command in the lockon option, but leave all keyboard command by its default.

Than I followed the simple rule to change things only in the saitek profileditor.

Tipp:open lockon in windowed-mode and also the saitek profile editor at one time, so you can easy switch between them and check your Profile instantly. That saved me plenty of time!

Thanks! I'll give it a try, but I just need to make sure that I understand what I'm supposed to do first. So here's what I think I'm supposed to try:

From the Lock-On option/input area, I select Seitek, and then clear all the axis commands. Then I have to somehow program the axis commands in my Saitek profile. Is this correct?

Thats correct..then you could do with a profile with most of the commands allready programmed in..but clear everything (commands) in the profile editor then re-assign them to your liking (you won't loose the programmed command's you just clear them)..

hope this makes sense :)

Here's a old link to some of my profiles at Saitek Profile's Forum (some could do with updating..) take a look and you'll get an idea of what you can do with the software http://www.saitekforum.com/showthread.php?t=8394&highlight=ukSleek

p.s you have to register with Saitek forums.

I would advise that you keep your axis commands - do not clear them. Rather clear your "buttons" commands in the Options/Input/Saitek X52 and re-assign button commands to the keyboard via the Saitek Programming Software.

Now I'm confused again. Am I supposed to delete the axis commands or not?:helpsmilie:

I currently have no button commands assigned to my joystick in the sim's option/input area . . . just the default axis commands.

And I'm still having problems . . . having the slider on my throttle joystick assigned to the zoom command causes my view to be all jumpy . . . and the slider doesn't work for the exterier view zoom.

Regarding the Zoom view using the slider, that's a common problem. Play around with the dead-zone of the slider, alternatively assign the zoom view to a rotary or even to a button on the flightstick, ie Zoom out: button "a" and zoom in button "a"+ pinkie switch.

Don't clean your axis commands(!) only the commands for the buttons.

Use the zoom-slow commands:

zoom in slow: numpad_*

zoom out slow: /

Thanks guys . . . I finally got my exterier view zoom working. What I ended up doing was following your advice, but in just resetting the keyboard commands back to default and then I reassigned my throttle hat to the zoom [NUM* and NUM/], while still using the slider for the cockpit zoom.

And it worked!!! My cockpit view is still a bit jumpy, but it's nothing like it was earlier.

Now if I could just get through some of the missions without getting shot down all the time. :(
