F-15C The Georgian War Campaign Feedback

Recommended Posts

Hello Feefifofum!

First of - Wow, what a campaign!! Thank you very much. I am on mission 13, and having a great time!!

One feedback, although this may apply to newbies like me - is that I felt a little lost in the beginning missions (I have to check which missions they were). Like - I was lost as to where to go and what to do. The lesson I've learned is that I really need to pay attention to the briefing and which way points are which cities, etc. But it got better as things went on..

Question though: Is there a way to play this campaign with a friend in CO-OP mode? We were able to do this on Bear Trap campaign by editing the mission files.

Thanks for the kind words Oz :)

We've tried to make the in-mission orders received over the radio very clear, but as you've noted it is important to read the briefing and understand what exactly it is you're doing, and where everything is.

You can access the kneeboard in-game using right shift + K which also contains the map from the brief, as well as a summary of the mission and flight plan; you can also re-access the full briefing and OPORD at any time using left alt + B

As for co-op, unfortunately due to the way campaign copy protection works we are not able to do this at this time. We have, however, been given the green light to convert a couple of the missions to multiplayer. I'll look into doing so in the coming week or two.

Enjoy the rest of the campaign!

That would be awesome!!!

Thanks for your quick reply. Very much looking forward to those missions! Will they be published in this thread?

Also - as a follow up - what other campaign/module would you recommend? I have also purchased the F/A-18, but I believe it does not yet have any campaigns. I wish you could make one for it ;););):):)

I guess my question would be - which campaign should I go with next? The DCS-A/10 enemy within? Or any others you would recommend?

Thanks again. Great work on the campaign. Loved and continue to love every minute of game play. I believe it was a heck of a deal at $10, especially considering the amount of work that you had put in.

Thanks for the kind words! As for the next xcampaign - depending what modules you have.

Thanks!

I only have FC3 and F/A-18C, but willing to purchase an additional module. I actually prefer to play with a buddy doing co-op, but I understand if there are limitations. If not, any good single player will do.

As far as content goes, both paid and free, it doesn't get much better than the A-10C in my opinion.

There are a ton of user-created missions out there that natively support multiplayer, plus some amazing single player DLC like Baltic Dragon's Enemy Within campaign and Ranger79's Operation Piercing Fury.

The module itself, as one of the most mature offerings, is complete and relatively free of bugs aside from the occasional odds and ends that pop up as DCS evolves. It's easy to get to a place where you're reasonably effective at basic use of the available ordnance, but there are always new and interesting things to learn.

Well, I finally finished the campaign so I'm giving my feedback.

I think it is a solid campaign. I didn't encounter any game breaking bugs, just a few voice over triggers which were a bit weird (probably due to myself doing weird things), some enemy planes crashing by themselves and small details like those.

Of course the campaign development has a bit of "handwavium" concerning the balance of forces and the effectiveness of the Eagle unit against the Russians. But I didn't mind to roll my eyes here and there about convinient plane retreats or CAP behaviour for the sake of the fun and cinematic experience.

All in all, a great campaign, great voiceovers and enough mission and objectives diversity to keep yourself entertained, even with a limited airframe like the F15C.

Oh, and the FRAGS are great. Just check the last mission FRAGS because it seems some of the pages are copied from the 15th mission.

I just finished the campaign. It was an amazing experience! Great voiceovers, interesting mission designs, good difficulty and nice storyline. I really liked the way the player is guided by the briefings and radio calls. There was no point in the campaign that felt unclear. Great work!

I've completed it earlier this month, and I was really disappointed with the campaign.

I'll quote the premises given in the ED shop about the campaign:

Throughout the campaign's 16 missions, the authors recreate some of the real-life events that happened between the 8th and 13th of August 2008. The fictionalized events presented in this campaign are based on extensive research from numerous Western and Russian publications, interviews with people who were directly involved on both sides, and several visits to the ABL (Administrative Boundary Line) with South Ossetia. The campaign aims to capture the pivotal moments of the 2008 war from a military perspective.

To me, this implied a more realistic campaign, at least inline with The Ultimate Argument, and with the great reputation baltic_dragon campaigns have on this forum, I went ahead with it.

I could forgive the asinine wingman comments early on, since I get that the writer needs to set a story frame. The early missions were also very good (the long patrol and the night mission were very fun), the yapping was still bearable (again, I expected these to just be set pieces and normalise as time went by instead of getting worse and worse). Unfortunately, after a couple of missions the campaign degenerates in Ace Combat, laced in between the action movie we have some weird talkshow going on by the punchable pilot and his dippy wingman, with the low point being my silly wingman wanting me to do a little airshow to "boost morale". To me, it was really unbearable. After a couple of missions I was so fed up with the talking that when the black box showed up in the top-right. I scrambled to turn off the sound on my computer and quickly look the other way on my screen. With the black box fading out being the "all clear" sign to look back to my screen and march on with my task to shoot down 25 aircraft per mission in the weirdest of circumstances (sure, why WOULD you send an assault package; when you can just send unescorted bombers, with fighters arriving in the wave after, followed by some CAS in another wave, and helicopters in another wave to just boost the enemies' kill ratio just a bit? And why would you try to attack their base of operations, when you can just act like they don't exist and keep loosing half the world's airforce on a day-to-day basis?)

Also, there were a lot of discrepancies between the waypoint info in the mission briefings and what was in the mission itself. Sometimes these would just amount to 500 feet differences, but in other cases they were large enough to influence operational actions. This is DCS, so these things are to be expected. Still, there is no reason for these QA issues to be there. Amazing that these haven't been noticed during testing. Also, the volume of the AWACS lady is much higher than the other voices. I had to tone the volume down by a third and raise it back up again after she was finished. And since we are talking about the AWACS-lady: Some of her dialogue seemed really weirdly placed. The longer "audio-repeats of the briefing" bits go on for so long, that you have to park your aircraft during taxiing just to let her finish speaking, or else it merges with the audio bits before and after take-off (did I already mention there is a lot of talking-for-the-sake-of-talking?)

If this was free, I would've never have finished it. For me, this campaign was a sheer punishment. I had expected a realistic campaign at best, and something comparable to the campaigns shipped with FC3 at worst.

Thanks for your feedback and I am sorry that you didn’t like it. This campaign was very special and it never said anywhere that it was realistic - to the contrary, word “fictional” is used several times. The main aim was to tell the story of the Georgian War of 2008 in a very unconventional way and we knew from the outset that not everyone will be satisfied - but then again, you can never satisfy everyone.

In this particular campaign the talking is for the sake of telling this story - and supplements the briefings. But I understand that not all people like campaigns with too much talking, just like not las people like their player to be voiced-over and tell things they would not necessarily want him to tell.

I said somewhere before that if I wanted to create a 100% realistic campaign you would fly around and then take fuel for few hours on 95% of the sorties without anything happening. So all of the campaigns have to be “on steroids” to be interesting.

Anyway, I will continue to do campaigns my way - with lota of story and interaction between player and other pilots. And guess you won’t be playing them, which is fine. Appreciate you took the time to post your review. With best New Year wishes,

Just got finished with this campaign. I have to say it was enjoyable all the way through and for the first time in any campaign, I didn't come across any show stoppers. So credit to you for keeping this updated. Look forward to getting into some of your other work.

Sorry you were disappointed. You're entitled to your opinion, of course. But, this campaign was/is BRILLIANT...even with unrealistic and lengthy comms. I think the comms help make up for DCS's (currently) very limited ATC.

Very fun campaign, and very good voice overs to entertain us on the "transfer" part of the missions, not only fun, but also educational, loved yesterday the chit-chat about the rusian plane code names.

Also I loved the "excuse" to make us use Sparrows on mission 7, that is where I'm now :megalol:

I like a lot the briefing in images beside the normal briefing, and having the briefing notes and map in the kneeboard is really brilliant !!!!!!!!!

I like the way you do it, you force many situations that are not usual for a pilot, but that could happen IRL !!!!

Ok, campaign ended, those credits were brilliant !!!!!

The campaign is very fun, you get entertained all the time, if there is no action there will be some dialogs, with jokes, interesting facts, etc that make you think until the next waypoint.

It's also educational, you learn a lot of terms, procedures, etc used in military aviation, and you also learn a little of history.

The balance between realism/fun/education is very good !!!!

Really looking forward to play your next campaig, shut up and take my money ;)

I agree, I like the voice acting. So far it's not particularly inane -- I'm thinking about a campaign I flew where about 90% of the (synthesized) speech is about the weather. Here, the dialogue moves the plot forward and the ATC in particular comes across as professional and believable.

I noticed there are a lot of AI units running around doing stuff that I can't see, mainly ground units shooting at each other. It would be OK with me to leave those out, to save on development time and hardware resources.

Agree multiplayer/coop would be cool. I'm developing a story -driven campaign and I could see the possibility of having it unfold online. So I'd run mission one for a week, then mission two the next week. Have the whole thing unfold like a mini-series, sorta like Band of Brothers. Given Baltic Dragon's production talent, I imagine he would put together something really awesome. Maybe using a Patreon funding model.

I have a bug to report - most of the voiceover sound is missing in the mission where you are tasked to attack Hinds and Hokums. The initial greeting is there, then all the voiceovers are muted until you meet the Flankers and then the voiceovers come back again. Good job I run subtitles:)

Brilliant, brilliant campaign, its not just the quality and quantity of the (superb!) voiceovers, but the quality of the set pieces too - you have rules of engagement and are not allowed to shoot everything on sight. Enemies can be forced to flee, sometimes they disengage by themselves and you must let them escape and avoid escalation.

I would say that this campaign is THE best time I've had in single player DCS, many thanks to all concerned

PS Now if only I could replay the whole thing or at least some of its missions in another plane - MiG-29G, F-14, F/A-18, (soon)F-16... Please make the option possible, guys, or at least lobby ED for making it possible.

Hi Katmandu and DeltaMike, thanks for the kind words. You can open the missions in the editor, change the aircraft type, and fly them directly from the editor with the green check box. You will be unable to save the modified versions but you can freely change aircraft type.

As for co-op, unfortunately this is not possible last we have heard from ED, sorry!

This works now (a month ago DCS crashed when I tried doing that), many thanks! However, USA does not have the MiG-29G, which leads to a small request:

Could you add most/all of the countries to the Blue Coalition? So, Germany (Mig-29G), China(J-11), France (M-2000), Ukraine(Su-27) to give us access to the planes above. Other countries like Spain, Israel, the UK, Denmark, Finland, Australia and so on would also be good as we could choose their national skins then.

PS I've tried the helicopter hunt mission (mission10) again and the voiceovers are still broken, it was not a momentary glitch. The first part of the briefing works fine, and then, from the player's confirmation onward, voiceovers go mute.

Oh well, I thought as much, no probs! I'll resort to db_countries.lua editing as I really want to play it again in a German MiG-29G for some weird reason:) And I'd still have the same wish (huge coalitions on the player's side) for your future campaigns though - if it's not too much trouble of course.

Thanks again for your work, I'll have to try flying the A-10C in VR now. I've given up on ground attackers in VR due to poor visibility, but your campaign motivates me to give it another shot.

Cheers!

EDIT - BUG: Mission 13 also suffers from broken audio right from the start. Like in Mission 10, some voiceovers do later on in the mission, not all though.
