Phoenix-II Missile Program

I wonder, would the military ever invent a newer long range air-to-air missile based on the Phoenix predecessor?

Don't mind these guys :D

I don't think we will see a new kind of Phoenix missle, but as far as a replacement for its role as a long range missile the US is developing new stuff.

There is a planned variant on the amraam which would add a ramjet, which I assume would add significant range.

The new D model amraam has a significant boost in range and is getting close to what the Phoenix could do.

Combined with modern jammers, the effective range isn't much different (at least that's what I would think)

I think any future weapons systems will be based on improving current designs verses creating something entirely...There are plenty of letters in the alphabet...

Meteor is rated around 300km, '3 times NEZ of AIM-120C-5'.

Meteor has longer range for sure. But we don't know all the actual numbers since they are classified. AIM-120C-8 (D) is the newest version IIRC (might still be prototype, I don't know), which also starts going towards 200km range. Optimal ranges ofcourse.

It's nothing like that.

Does the Meteor NEZ extend beyond the detection range of the Gripen? That's not even talking about the 2 way missile datalink, P2P data link, buddy homing and all the other Meteor goodies etc.

Respectfully, I doubt you know better than the aircraft engineers.

It doesn't have to be the firing aircraft illuminating the target, which is why the Meteor is the perfect weapon for a mixed 4th/5th gen fleet.

Price of plane is nothing compared to price of pilot.....

Shoot down a couple pilots KIA, and rest of pilots starts to have stress level higher for next missions and mission designs are started to be revised and maybe even avoided.
