Ryzen price politics

The prices for various Ryzen's have surfaced on Gurud3d.com

 

 

For what I can tell, this is not good for DCS as you have to take the most expensive R7-1800x for 599€ to get a 4GHz BoostClock.

 

The lesser expensive ones also have a lower BoostClock.

 

Down were the prices compete with Intel's 4C chips...that AMD gets too slow :(

 

 

Not sure, this sounds again like a bad AMD story to me.

 

 

Sure, for 599 it surely beats the 1199 priced 6900k...but that is not a CPU for us anyways.

 

Whereas Intel has fast IPC CPUs at modest price ( 360€ I paid for my 7700k ) AMD wants you to buy the big thing to somehow get good IPC. This is pointless and in the end costs more and does less if this holds true.

 

When you look at what you get from AMD for same price as an i7-7700k....forget IPC...just forget it !

FX Series should have taught you that much.

 

That Price List originated from WCCF, and they are known to be a bit "free" with adding in assumed info to their articles.

What you say makes it even worse Skate, at least the way I understand it.

 

AMD had less IPC with more MHz...now they have less MHz and want to pull even with Intel IPC ??

 

 

I have to see that to believe it and for 599 I wont get an AMD that has a stock clock of 4GHz from the DCS simmers POV. For anything else like rtendering etc. that CPU might be an option, for games I dont see that as of the current "leaked" info.

 

maybe we still get suprised, I wish it would happen.

Ryzen had more IPC w/ Lower Clock w/ Engineering Samples...

 

Zen is not the same Frankenstien design used by the FX Series.

They need to be a lot more efficient per clock to pull even.

Zen Die is also ~10% Smaller than Current Intel iSeries.

When I made the ( had to actually ) move to 14nm from SandyBridges 28nm I found out how much positive that is in regards of cooling ehhh :(

 

Smaller fabrication is nice in many aspects but the downside is your die gets so small while it still has a TDP of 90-100W like before...it is that much harder to cool.

 

OK, Intel uses a very low end TIM and you have to be lucky if temps stay OK when you oc further.

 

Let's hope AMD and their fabs know how to make those chips, Polaris afaik has the same fab size so there should be some experience. Intel has it since Skylake but never really made anything out of it imho. Cores run hot under the IHS/TIM, the smaller die is contra-productive with Intel's IHS/TIM approach.

 

I hope AMD makes them better ! Show Intel how it works to satisfy gamers !! :D

Intel likes to Use Crap TIM Glue on their Heat Spreaders.

 

AMD Solders them things on, lol.

 

The Heat Transfer from DIE -> Heat Spreader/Lid -> Heatsink was really bad for while on Intel Chips due to the TIM Glue they Used.

 

 

Also, Ryzen will Require Windows 10+

I was closely following the Ryzen updates coz I was thinking of upgrading by moving to AMD ...

But it seems like upgrading within Intel would be a safe bet for now ...

I was hoping AMD would launch R7-1800x around Euro 350 price range to eat into Intel market-share but 599 basically just shuts the doors for me and many others on AMD ... :(

If I get an AMD processor which beats 7700k at around Euro 350 then I will definitely support AMD ...:thumbup:

 

As usual with AMD they have promised a lot but delivered too little ... Hope I am wrong and we all see the rise of Ryzen ... :smartass:

Why do you even compare 8c/16t clocks and price against lower core count intel clocks and price? You should compare R7-1800x against 6900k and if you want a gaming CPU from AMD wait for the R5 series with 4 and 6 core designs. I'm pretty sure top end 4 and 6 core CPUs will have higher clocks than an 8c design since less heat production from 1/2 the cores. Also the price for R5 designs would be a lot less than the price for a flagship 1800x-CPU. And keep in mind that the 1700/1700X are still 8c/16t models for 320/380$ and they can be both overclocked.

 

Also, IPC seems ok from what we have seen on AMD's demo against the 6900k. But here you have to remember that it was AMD's demo, not a third party review.

 

Also the arguments that Ryzens are too expensive seems so weird. They are about half the price of their Intel counterpart, that seems pretty cheap to me if they are even close on performance, they could even lose a little and still have a lot better value.

Prices are OK. We shall see how high four cores can go. If they can hit 5GHz(even more) they will be suitable for DCS.

I will be upgrading almost primarily for DCS. And the go/no-go decision will be how well Ryzen will work here compared to i5/i7 Kaby Lake.

High priced in context to IPC, cause that counts for DCS.

Sure, as an 6900k alternative 600€ vs 1000€ or even more is a great deal.

 

But I am solely looking for IPC, ONLY...and that is where the AMD might come with a catchback.

 

From what I have read, the highest clocked are the most expensive ones with also highest core count. That is contraproductive for DCS simmers in IPC context imho.

 

But we will see, maybe they oc like hell and any 4-6 core R7 can go 4.5 with a better per clock efficiency than Intel ( aka my 7700k ) and it may also crack 2900 Passmark IPC's...which mine does.

 

 

For anything else this CPU will be awesome, I am pretty sure.

You wont need an 8Core 16 Thread CPU to Run DCS.

I just want to Finally catch Up w/ everyone else and use the newer Memory, I/O, and Chipset Standards.

Theres a bit of misinterpretation of some facts here.

Ryzen chips of the X series are not locked to any clock speeds. The specs of 3.6 and 4.0GHz speeds are the garanteed minimum ones with the baseline wraith cooler.

 

If you have better cooling it will automatically clock higher and you have to then find the limit by yourself. The mileage will vary depending how cool you can keep it under load.

 

Its IPC seems to be pretty much neck to neck with intel. The only variable will be clock speeds and we should wait for benchmarks to get any idea where they land at.

 

Ryzen Chips should be very good for DCS. Not the best, but pretty good. Where Ryzen will shine brighter though, is multithreaded applications.

 

Im looking at that 1800X myself as DCS is not my only game (I also have Star citizen and thats what Im primarily gunning for).

Thank god AMD looks like it has finally got serious and pulled it's finger out. Now it's just a case of waiting for release and reviews before making a commitment to an AMD or Intel based system. Just another couple of weeks to go hopefully before the real state of play in the CPU market is revealed.

How can we explain this graph then where the i7's pull away with 2/3 more oomps per core?

 

We really need them out, give one to Kyle at HardOCP and then see. If Kyle says they are good they are, if he dooms them don't buy'em. Since that for almost 2 decades :)
