Virpil or VKB

Guys, what would you choose between these two new superb joysticks?

Take in consideration joystick only ( not ruder pedals, throttle ).

My point of view is that mechanics of VKB looks a bit more refined with that new clutch option which might me useful, while Virpil have an extreme good looking joystick handle.

So, what would you think guys?

I think I will wait for the reviews before choosing, although the gunfighter having the warthog adapter sways me a little their way. If you can buy just a base with warthog adapter that would be the ultimate.

I've got the Gladiator Pro and Warthog adapter, I think gunfighter is an excellent option if you have a 'Hawg or Cougar grip.

The stock VKB grip does feel like most joysticks, very plastic feeling. That said I'm using this grip anyway with some mods when flying the P-51 as it's the only WWII type grip I've got.

I am VKB fan and future partner, but cant be trusted if I show conflict of interests.

I have use joys all my life (42), and in Argentina after taxes you pay 600US for a Saitek hotas........

So I pay attention when I see quality, upgrades and spare parts.

Virpil is offering all that VKB is not at this time.........VKB have better gimbal but Virpil offer things like gimbal regulation from the outside.

VKB plan is according to me:

From Mechanical upgrades to sticks changes, VKB offer a scalable system that allow you to build your simulator according to your need and your wallet.

Don't have a entire product line plan and future products from virpil to write about they strategy.

I will hate to see Virpil and VKB go to war, I was the first to ask virpil for a grip dapter to use on vkb hardware, I ask virpil and ask VKB to get in touch on that matter.

Simmers need quality hardware, spare parts, upgrade paths, the more offer the better, but the market is small and will hate that any company compromise designs do to competition, but we need competition to keep new ideas reaching the market.

Resume:

So far VKB has history than only you can judge

Virpil have products that VkB don't have at this time

You could wait for vkb (are you aware of they product plans), you could go whit virpil, if $ is no problem go whit both and review.

software could be a point for you too, and been both Russians soft could be a problem (no technically but in user experience)

PD: in Spanish one of the company name sound like a Viagra brand (no disrespect intended and a I love the new grip)

Yeah, I'd ask the same - which sim(s)?

I play Elite Dangerous, and DCS (modern jets and choppers), so a WWII stick has no appeal to me right now. Any stick I buy needs to be at least as well set up as a Warthog stick, though the VKB M5 wasn't bad either.

Though I have seen pics of a "space" stick for VKB, which looks good, and the Virpil stick also looks very nice, it's actually a very tough choice...

I, personally, hope to buy both (partly to support people making nice stuff, partly because I would love the option to mix my gear around based on preferences for different games).

At this rate, I should have just bought a plane...

Bit biased here, but to me the most important new thing of the VKB Gunfighter's next-gen gimbal is the new clutch that will allow the user to set a certain level of friction for that heavier feel that usually is missing from a centering spring based controller. This will be so nice to have for DCS, esp. DCS helos.

Also, VKB has developed a new 3-pin connector with quick release for their grips, which should make swapping grips a breeze.

Besides that, VKB is developing a handful of new grips (space sim grip left/right handed with twist, modern jet grip, etc) that will be compatible with the Gunfighter base. And - as always, VKB will make adapters for the Gunfighter to support the TM Warthog and Cougar grips alike.

What simmers do you play?

I am thinking to DCS only, both airplanes and helis. And I do prefere the modern planes grip even I do play WW2 warbirds.

Even I do play other games like Arma, Elite Dangerous rarely and looking forward for some X-plane11 in the future, I am considering a new joystick for its precision in DCS only.

I do not want that these two russian builders to get in competition either. It will be best for everyone if they would be able to collaborate with each other and offer us the best solution.

The stock VKB grip does feel like most joysticks, very plastic feeling.

Gladiator born as "entry level" joystick not "high level", in no way his grip will be made in anything different than plastic.

The use of this grip in PRO models is a "add hoc" solution until they have capacity to produce different grips, in different materials.

So their 3 buttons grip is the last thing one should look in then, until of course the plastic bias is priority.

BTW - MongoosT-50 will be made initially in plastic or resin.

Anyway VKB offer support for use 3rd part grips, Warthog, Cougar, and plastic Cobra M5.

They both look good, at this point for me though I think I am going to want one that for sure has a Warthog adapter - I really want to be able to use my Warthog grip with whichever I get. I guess that could change but is how I am feeling currently.

Mongoos or Gunfighter? Really a good question, that I´m currently asking myself, too.

While I like the looks of the T-50 and the idea of being able to adjust the friction forces from the outside in a simple way, I have to say, that in the end I need a base, that provides the possibility to use the Warthog grip.

On the other side, there is still no information about the Gunfighter on the European homepage of VKB. So, if there will be shipping from the US at high shipping costs, I maybe will take the 15% preorder + 5% member discount of the T-50 into account.

On the other side, there is still no information about the Gunfighter on the European homepage of VKB. So, if there will be shipping from the US at high shipping costs,

VKB usually ships two different ways - either drop ship directly from VKB HQ in China to each customer, or ships a pallet of product to their respective resellers first, and then we ship directly within our jurisdiction.

Not sure why the European site doesn't have the info you desire just yet, but every reseller handles their shop differently.

PS: VKB will ship the Gunfighters starting in March, what's the actual shipping date (not pre-order date) for the Mongoos? I must have missed that info...

Thanks for clarification about the shipping, rrohde.

According to their homepage the T-50 grip will be shipped in February and the base in March.

For me, I haven't seen a reason to go for Virpil. VKB has well-tested products, and their base design is very well iterated now. The new addition of the dry clutch to the Gunfighter's design is very interesting to me as a supplement to traditional spring tension. Additionally, Virpil has not priced very competitively... not enough to make me pick the dark horse. If you have a Warthog grip on hand, it's a no-brainer. If not, that's another discussion.

Is the Gunfighter ever coming out? It's long overdue. No faith at all that VKB can deliver their products.

Gunfighter supposed to start shipping March 2016. VKB has had no problem delivering their products so far as I know, their problem has meeting the demand for them. ...that and playing 'musical chairs' with their grip connector' :p

I say buy both as soon as they are available, resell the one you like less these things hold their value really well because they are of lifetime construction and the supply does not meet the demand, especially once the other simmers catch on and realize these are what the cool kids use

Both gimbals have serious merit, though I place high value on damping so for now Gunfighter IMO is the better option. I do like the idea of convenient tension adjustment on VPC, but once you have your tension set it's not something that I tend to change a lot. Damping (externally adjustable iirc) however comes into play with every. single. input. you make and the effect of using not a trivial novelty.

The Gunfighter is long overdue, at least based on their initial projected dates - partly because they ended up redesigning the gimbal system to beef it up. I have been following it's progress for quite some time as I was very interested.

Now I am somewhat torn between the two as well, although still leaning toward the Gunfighter. But that can change as well lol.

I was very interested in VKB but the combination of extremely limited availability, long delays, and a fluctuating North American distribution chain make me pretty skeptical.

Is it coming out? Will there be more than 20 sticks shipped worldwide? Will promised accessories get released in a timely fashion? History says mehhh and for that cost?

To me, VKB is too small to be a player in the joystick market and too big to give the communication and quality you get when working with someone like Milan or Baur one to one.

If something comes out, is great, and available, I'll change my tune.

I see where you're coming from.

Rest assured that at least the North American supply chain is intact and hopefully will win over those who (understandably) got frustrated at one point or another in the past.

Let's take it from here. Thanks for voicing your concerns!
