Does 1.5.5 use the same EDGE graphics engine as 2.0?

My understanding is that 1.5 has a slightly older version of EDGE. The switch from 1.2 to 1.5 was very noticable. I'm not sure it is missing anything visible compared to 2.0, but I think the Caucasus map is not yet compatible with the latest revisions of EDGE, hence the work needed for the merge.

The version numbers must be somewhere around the forums (T3 vs T4 or something like that ?)

They are both EDGE The DirectX 11 Graphics Engine.

1.5 uses T3 Engine, 2.0 uses T4 Engine.

The T Engines are "Terrain3 and Terrain 4"

They are different underlying Terrain Engines

ie:

T3 - 1.5.x - Outside of DX11 / Support, I cant list specifics, not sure if T3 is related to DX11 or not.

T4 - Introduced Format, File Structure and DRM to Handle Multiple Terrains.

Depends on gfx card. 2.0 utilizes the card better than 1.5 (for example, with my old GTX780, it's up to 66% reported GPU usage in 1.5 vs. 100% in 2.0), but at the same time NTTR map is more demanding than Caucasus one (it's especially VRAM hungry), so people with modern cards say 2.0 runs better, while people with older ones get better performance in 1.5. For me they're similar.

Good summary Art!! Thanks.

I do indeed get a much better frame-rate with 2.0 that I do with 1.5.5.

I have a GTX980 Ti but an older CPU - I7 3770K running at stock 3.5 GHz. 16 GB RAM.

Despite the detail of the NTTR map, the frame rate difference of 2.0 compared to 1.5.5 is huge for me.

Can't wait for everything to be unified under 2.5

That's not EDGE per-se, that's the terrain engine.

I have MSI GTX 960 4Gb, Vsync on with all setting at max except shadow on medium. Lowest FPS at around 30-35 in very populated ground targets. Well....Maybe I should buy NTTR instead of speculation.

From my own experience and from I read on the forums, I can only underline what Art said. On a modern graphics card NTTR runs much better than 1.5, for people with old cards 1.5 runs better. Until a year ago I had a 770, and 1.5 and 2.0 ran about the same. Now I have a 1070, and 2.0 runs much better than 1.5.

T4 Supports ClipMaps for Varying Terrain Mesh Resolution which is used in NTTR.

So NTTR:

-Has High Resolution Terrain mesh (more polygons), near the camera.

-Has Lower Resolution Terrain Mesh (less Polygons), away from the camera.

On a modern graphics card NTTR runs much better than 1.5, for people with old cards 1.5 runs better. Until a year ago I had a 770, and 1.5 and 2.0 ran about the same. Now I have a 1070, and 2.0 runs much better than 1.5.

The Terrain Mesh Resolution and Clipmaps coupled with the higher resolution textures and object counts benefit Newer GPUs a Little bit better.

1.5 Runs the same map as 1.2, just under DirectX 11 instead of DX9.

So what is the difference between the T5 (hormuz) vs T4 (NTTR)

Not an Official Breakdown, But I'd assume it's something like:

T1: DX8?, Original Terrain engine (LoMAC/FC??)

T2: DX9?, Improved Mesh Resolution, Noise Layer Etc (FC2/BS1/DCS1.2.x)

T3: DX11, EDGE Support, Texture Resolution Increase on Caucasus (DCS 1.5.x)

T4: DX11, EDGE Support, ClipMaps (NTTR), Introduced Format, File Structure, Underlying System and DRM to Handle Multiple Terrains.

T5: DX11, EDGE Support, Dynamic Mesh Terrain Technology (DCS: Strait of Hormuz)

T6 - x.x.x -

HDR, PBR, Lighting and Shading Etc arent really part of the Terrain Engine,

They are Evolution's of the Lighting and Effects in the EDGE Graphics Engine.

But Enough of my technical mumbo Jumbo..

Interesting thread.

I note I get 100% more FPS in 1.5.5, but I can't say it is smoother. If anything, 1.5.4 felt smoother for me before the update. I recently flew in 2.0 again and it feels like glass. Probably apples and oranges and I note my 6000x1920 res is very taxing on framerates.

Didn't even realise that SOH was T5. Thought it was T4.

Is it safe to assume that the T4 & T5 will be able to run side by side in DCS 2.5.XX ??

Thanks for that info Skate.

Yes, pretty sure.

Isn't NTTR supposed to be upgraded to T5 (with the upcoming map update?)?

Can you check for me how much with GPU-Z, and maybe report it also here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=177026

Thanks

I'm buying a new GPU in a month or so, I hope 8 GB of VRAM should be enough ?

I have a 1070 and it uses about 4.5gb of vram over Las Vegas. I doubt you will use up all those 8gb of vram. I feel safer with 8, rather than 6 on the 980ti. I had a 970 and it simply didn't have enough vram.

Update: Where did you look ? Just bought NTTR and A-10C today (wasn't aware of the boundle before)

Video Mem value inside DCS reported as 13726 MB ... is that a value of what should be in GDDR but .... because the process is only 3.5GB Commit Size, so where's the rest ... this could be some other meaning. GPU-Z reports 1948 MB in GDDR5 and 625 MN in shared, so that shared is there added on top of 2900MB in RAM and then it gets to ~3600 MB

It took like 5 minutes to enter Mission Editor after authenticating, hopefully it won't take that long all the time.

I spawned over Boulder City on a map with a few ground fortifications and my A-10C
