Hawk Cockpit Progress Thread

Hey Guys,

Mike and I thought we'd start a new thread so you guys can see what we're up to on the rear cockpit and front cockpit tweaks as we go along.

With DCS 1.5.5 being released in OpenBeta it gave us a new shader system and the ability to have greater controls over lighting in the cockpit and external models.

So far the tests have gone well for the new rear cockpit panel and emergency lighting with little to no FPS loss.

I've been working on one specific thing over the past few days which has been a massive bugbear of mine since Hawk release; panel backlighting.

My initial approach was to have one backlight that would do all necessary gauges but this won't work due to only some of the gauges being backlit.

I then looked at having two targeted spotlights on each gauge, but I'm very conscious of any FPS hits with 2 lights per gauge (14 in total), plus I didn't like the effect.

My other challenge is that we have reflective glass over each gauge; now some gauges are set back form the glass which is fine, but for the HSI as an example the glass is flush with the gauge face. So any light outside of the glass will obviously reflect off of the face.

Where I'm at right now is having an omni light for each gauge (bringing it to 7 lights) and placed just behind the glass.

I'm still playing with this idea and tweaking here and there but so far I like the effect in DCS which even casts off light from the gauge to surrounding switches, etc which is truer to real life.

When I've added all of the gauge lights I'll record a quick test video in DCS and post up for you guys and will then change the front gauge lights to match, which may make it into the main DCS Release version (depends when that is).

Anywho, here's a comparison of the front and rear cockpit in the same jet using seat switching (so the light dial is set the same amount), HSI and VSI gauges done so far.

Let me know what you think so far.

Cheers,

Chris.

It looks good, maybe tweak the cast off effect a bit more? The warning lights should cast off some light to their surroundings, it looks a bit sterile for me, just my opinion.

I've been comparing your images to images I can find of cockpits at night. I don't suppose the Hawk has NVI lighting available in your version? I'd expect some green hue from the panel lighting if that's the case.

Been testing this tonight for Chris,

It looks very nice, much improved from the ones we have at the moment, and frames a good also.
