Open Conflict - Server Information

Mirknir

Recommended Posts

I've joined the server a few times now, mainly to fly into the conflict zone and shoot at whatever my radar picks up as an enemy aircraft. But I'd like to be a bit more aware of the way objectives work and where to go for AG missions, what they are, and how they are set up.

Is there anywhere I can go for documentation or an FAQ as to how the entire system works? I see that I can get the status of targets and things with chat commands, but I'm not sure what to bomb, protect or evac etc.

Wow, what a great session I had tonight :)

I just did my first Mi-8 multi flight, succesfully picked up downed pilot (for some reason my R-863 stopped working after I requested a hover check, but nevermind) and flew back. No problems there.

Then I decided to do a quick Huey flight, as I was warming up engines we got Player Eject prompt, and I flew to pick him up. About 3 minutes from LZ we got another call not far away, so I picked up first pilot and headed to second one (FM homing FTW). Gues what... We got another call 20 km from second pickup zone, as I was RTB. As I was flying by DustOff=3=6 and his escorting jet we agreed that I should go and pick up that 3rd pilot. Coach warned me about AA in the town, so I decided to fly really low Nap ot the Earth profile, but as I approached the town where Coach was waiting I spotted a red smoke on top of a hill. I tried to evade and planned to try different approach, but as I was flying away hoping not to get noticed I started taking fire. I was facing back to AA, so personel didn't get hit, but most of instruments went down. I decided to land and investigate what's going on since I noticed a loss of power, and since the terrain was uneven I made a decision to land on a roof. About 1- 2 minutes later we got engine fire, so I did a emergency engine shutdown. I reported everything on the chat, and everyone went for a nice SERE. Weather was not very nice, I really appreciated that warm Huey at that point :) Some picks:

That landing was a good call, would have to autorotate with an engine fire otherwise.

Going SERE, nice view but what a bad day for a walk

Thanks once again for this server! Having a blast every time!

Is there anywhere I can go for documentation or an FAQ as to how the entire system works? I see that I can get the status of targets and things with chat commands, but I'm not sure what to bomb, protect or evac etc.

before you take off, take the time and study the F10 Radio menu, there you can get all the overviews over air and ground targets and missions available. with the basic info of heading and distance you can then get familiar with

the locations on your F10 MAP view, using the ruler.

for more detailed informations use the specific chat commands that are based on the three letter codes. example for a ground attack target "-ag cv3"

for air targets remember that enemy players don't show up in the communications menu (F10 -> Air targets) - but depending on your aircraft you can use the AWACS menu.

there are also a couple of overview maps in the briefing list (they are also on the original post by mirknir - check mirknirs signature for more general FAQ)

all of this information should get you going, once you get familiar with the location of targets, know the area, the approximate routes of convoys, it will get easier and more fun. also chat up team mates and see what they are doing!

Yes I too had an awesome night. Just before Samek entered I started out the usual routine, new round start, loaded up hospital supplies flew toward it and made it active. Upon reaching and activating hospital a pilot went down by kashuri (big no fly zone lots of AA), so I quickly respooled my rotor and began heading in towards the downed pilot, not a minute later I see an explosion infront of me, a friendly F15 was shot down, quickly made the hard right turn 90 degrees too land and pick up the pilot. Brought him back to hospital and then started out again for original downed pilot by kashuri. My route of flight brought me by a safehouse, landed, loaded up the one poor guy there and continued my route. Multiple enemy fighters overhead and lots of dogfights going on, however one of the explosions was another friendly F15! Quickly I put his beacon into FM nav while keeping the ADF on the original pilot. I was sonic boomed by some fighter and immediately took cover in a nearby city. Requesting CAP and CAS for the rest of the route, friendly A10s began using mavericks on kashuri airfield. Going into the Lz for the closest pilot I see an enemy fighter shoot down my A10 CAS! He did not eject and mustve been killed instantly. 2 pilots secured I continued now toward the dreaded Kashuri airfield. Picking my route carefully through several towns and ridge lines I spotted his green smoke. Only 3 clicks from the airfield, well within SAM range. I made 2 quick passes using flares to test enemy defenses. The third pass I utilized the combat landing and scooped up the friendly pilot. Dropping flares I red lined my huey exceeding 130KTS fighting the retreating blade stall while keeping it from mast bumbping I was on the run back to the hospital 25nm away. After eclipsing a ridge I spot the dreaded rocket smoke of a missle! It was headed right at me, dropped all remaining flares, made a hard stop 180 degree turn and dropped into a valley. Landed on a roof and asked for immidete CAS from any available fighter. By now I was running low on fuel and completely exhausted all countermeasures, and hopelessy cut off behind enemy lines. (wheres mirk when ya need em!;)) Thankfully 2 F15s answered my plea for help and came to my grid. After the first F15 shot down 2 enemy fighters I made a run for it. Max speed and trying not to exceed 10 AGL I bee lined it for the hosptital with my huey now full (3 for 3 on board) Green smoke in sight for the hospital! Landed and got another beer from fridge. By now I was being sonic boomed by multiple friendly F15s who gained the advantage in the combat zone. Spinning up the rotor 1 last time, I made my way to the kutasi safe zone. Picked up 2 pilots at the lake safehouse enroute and waved hello to Samek going the other way into the fight. The green smoke never looked so good at kutasi medical center. Put her on the pad with a steep approach and shut down. WHAT A MATCH! Definitely up there in my top 2 or 3 Open conflict rounds. Palms sweaty and beers empty, the only way to fly DCS! Thanks to the incredible Mirknir for a great server. My stats for missals launched at me increased by 3 in one flight. Talk about adrenaline!

The beer holders will be incorporated soon, pics to follow :D

love all the stories of open conflict, almost worthy of a new thread for just the awesome stories and pics/videos? open conflict bar. hehe.

of course dust didnt tell the story of how he crashed his gazelle into my rescue huey, RIGHT when i was evacuating a downed pilot from a forest hillside!

also, do the captured rescue things work? i saw 2 pop ups of "pilot X captured etc etc" but they disappear superfast from my screen (other messages stay longer) and then i could not find anything in the rescue menu about those pilots. hm?!

I forgot to mention something:

As I was flying Mi-8 I was surprised that MEDIC slot used civilian skin. Would it be possible to have it switched to something more appropate? My recommendation:

Hello guys

I really love all the stories, keep them coming cause they keep me going

@Decipher on Capture system:

I did some test with DustOff and the captured pilot extraction basic feature seems to work.

As usual after releasing a feature, I will check Skynet log files on busy sessions to check if the feature is working properly over time when repeated and used a lot.

A typical busy session is 40k lines of logs sorted in debug/warning/error so, of course, the more precise the bug, the faster I can find it :)

I can already tell you I see some new warnings in the rescue/downed pilot system.

I'll keep you posted in release notes.

Some precision about the Capture Pilot Extraction:

Both coalition have the 'pilot captured' chat message so that both coalitions may try to not get captured and maybe do less suicidal runs.

So you may see a chat message about a capture that is not a 'capture extraction' objective for you.

Only the coalition that has the extraction objective will receive the objective popup message with sound.

Also, spawned downed pilot, captive pilot and commando are the color of the coalition that needs to do the extraction.

They can be killed.

They will be killed by a nearby convoy or a crashing helicopter.

In this case, the objective will be cancelled.

I've added a screenshot of what it should look like.

@Samek about the skin of MI8

I don't use non official skins on the server, I want everyone to see the same skins, especially for MEDIC.

If I use a downloadable skins, only people that downloaded it will see it.

Last time I checked, MI8 MEDIC had 2 official skin possibilities: the blue naval SAR or the civil Police.

I can use the blue SAR even if it's for sea I think.

Tell me which is better ; I ll add a screenshot.

I think they are adding a proper medic one "soon"

In Masterscript: Skynet v2.5.7

  • Fixed: Navigation beacon could be shared between rescue/capture objectives on opposite faction
    • Navigation beacon are supposed to only be shared between objectives in the same location
    • The algorithm was not working properly with dynamic objectives like rescue and capture extraction

useful MP briefing/radio tips

Thanks for this, I had just discovered the '-ag site' info commands, so that seems like a common starting point. I'll fire it up again and get out the ruler etc. What I was concerned about is whether all the ag missions were for destroying stuff, or would I end up bombing an area I am supposed to be defending. Maybe the f10 map will provide more info on that etc.

Because I update the server a lot, I prefer to have all the help dynamically in the server.

The ingame briefing is a nice place to start.

Then typing '-help' in the chat will give you all other help commands like '-ag help' that will give you all the special commands like '-ag <objectivecode>'

Then you have

-tr: transport/delivery

-re: Rescue/Extraction

-aa: Air to Air

-ex: Explosive Packs

-opt: Preference/Option

-server: Server status

Then you can check the radio menu that has a lot of shortcut to the chat commands.

Radio commands are a bit more limited but usually more practical to use in flight or if you fly VR.

Then you have the F10 map that have 'spotters' around targets so you can still see the objective location without seeing all the individual targets.

You can check the very first post of this thread ; there are some sexy images explaining some stuff like this one

Have fun!

you could evolve this captured pilot system to really complex dynamic scenarios, but this either might not be possible with the scripting, or not feasible in regards to the performance hit or complexity.

like both teams get a mission, when a pilot gets captured, to extract enemy pilot, or to rescue captured teammate. the rescue mission could only give you like "the last known radio location" so you had to search the area and eliminate the enemy soldiers first.

in addition to that it could spawn a small convoy that might reach the location 5 minutes or so before the timer runs out... something like that.

just thinking out loud here :)

Haha we won't talk about my gazelle failures :)

I think your idea is good but have a feeling that would be a significant strain in performance but what do I know I just fly huey hehe. However what I do think would be cool is to some how drive both teams to the same obj, like red player shot down so red can "rescue" and blue can "capture" there had to be a rewarding or driving force tho, like maybe a captured pilot will "insta-spawn" the AI CAPs. I think driving both teams to the same objective could really increase player on player coop action like increasing need for gunship support etc

Thanks for the detailed post. I should have mentioned that I play in VR, so the bounding box for my enlarged radio text menu is causing issues and clipping text. Also, the f10 map doesn't show anything other than aerodromes, radio towers and my location.

Loading it in regular 2d mode made everything a lot clearer, so I may even have that running on a seperate laptop so I can at least get some kind of map going.

As for the Mi- 8 skin I completely understand! Frankly speaking I expected such answer :) IMHO Naval SAR skin looks better (yeah I know we are not flying naval ops), but I personally will probably make JSGME to swap default skins for something different, so let's see what other guys think.

As for two factions fighting over a downed pilot- it is a nice idea, but I hope that would be a separate task from what we have right now. I fly slick after all LOL.

Will do some more Mi-8 flying today, need to get used to that Russian systems!

Cheers!

Just made JSGME mod that swappes Police livery with German SAR one, so I'm good :)

Oh why yes not all missions duel as I prefer slick too, I was just thinking maybe only small percent of capture or maybe the wrecks could be duel but ejections would be single coalition oriented. Just a thought. Could be fun to have formation flight of Huey's to and from objectives

Yea, I want to do more complex and dynamic scenarios but I am also going slowly and incrementally to be able to release small features at a time.

Ideally, I would have ED support to do a full fledged dynamic campaign server, host it on NASA computers and have Scarlett Johanson voice Skynet but I am just one programmer in his garage

I like all these ideas and I will think about them.

Still a common objectives will ask helicopter of the furthest coalition to travel maybe more than 100km to go on site :)

Also, the site location would be know by both factions so it could be interesting or full of trolling...

Hey mirk I was just pondering something and now I'm curious about it. How does Skynet save all the "-stats"? I've had several crashes and dump files mid round and my stats still stay safe with te mysterious **skynet** :) is there anything I could do as a player to inadvertently loose those stats? Like change names or something? If someone joins under a new name does that start a new stat sheet? It's all very mysterious to me:alien:

haha, let me put my nerd cap :)

When you connect to a server, the server receives your unique client ID (UID), your IP address and your player name.

I index and reference players with UID so if you change your name or your IP address, I will still know it's you.

For skynet, the name doesn't matter, it's just a display name.

When you connect, if it's the first time, I create a new profile file for you and if you've already been there, I load your old file.

The profile file has the stats, the offenses, the different name used and the options of the player.

When you play, stats are computed and regularly save to your profile file.

If you like metrics: so far, I've about 3900 unique players, with each their profile file for about 15M.

When you crash or disconnect, I detect it and display a 'left server' message. Skynet will still keep your profile in memory and still tracks you.

This is how you don't lose stats or how I only send ONE 'welcome to open conflict' sound per player per server session or also how I do temporary ban.

As a player, you can't really do something to lose stats but when the server crashes, you might lose the stats computed since the last time the profiles were dump from memory to files.

Another great flight today!

Finally no nasty surprises, just workhorse flights- Field Hospital resupply mission, and then 3 CSAR flights including one fellow Medevac pilot that either got shot down or crashed his chopper about 10 km from our home FARP. I remember seeing him taking off couple minutes before I did, so that made me extend my session so I get him back home.

Picking up Medevac pilot (I am sorry, I forgot your username)

2wgvgnm.jpg

Back home at FARP. Engines shot down after cooldown, made sure to refuel her for next session! Also 3 picked up pilots we brought back onboard got moved to the hospital you can see in the shot to get checked and what not.

141pi6f.jpg

EDIT:

Another Mi-8 flight, transported some personel from FARP to Kutasi Airport. Airport was quiet busy with one A-10 doing emergency landing, so I hovered by the airstrip to provide some support if needed. Pilot pulled the landing off just fine, so apart from blocked runway everything was OK! Just one shot from landing pad after engine shutdown:
