how close is the Edge engine to photo-rea terrain?

I agree with having a realistic landcape. There is a reason why i play dcs vs all other simulators. Because it looks great. When you pay $500 plus for a game, you expect the best right. If i had to pay extra for dcs 2.0 to look better visually land and air i will no questions ask.

Because contrary to what virtual pilots may believe and do, a (combat) pilot would actually spend a lot of his time looking outside the cockpit :D

In addition, photo-realism helps with properly working camouflage for all vehicles - no more hunting for 'dots' that appear before the trees fade in, making it easy to spot SAMs etc. Same deal with the ground being more broken up than its current flatness: Things become more difficult to spot visually.

Suddenly you start appreciating that pod.

Why it needs to be photorealistic?

Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D

I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

it it can draw them in, they will come

Per GGTharos's post, if DCS offered an engine upgrade which could create the visuals that provided the player a deeper sense of immersion, I think even those who don't want to count leaves (but will appreciate the more finely defined details so targets can be more clearly seen as in real life) will not pass on such an upgrade. Else, Flanker would still be a very popular and often played sim. As would Tornado, and Pacific Gold:

With a graphics upgrade, these excellent sims would be popular today. It's about which sort of immersion suits a person. Obviously.:joystick:

In FSX with satellital imagery and editing the autogen files you could get results like this.

I dont think this is enough to get photo-realistic terrain. Most satellite imagery needs major work for use in a sim or else it looks silly with shadows or flat trees (etc) in them. That isnt photo-realistic to me. Photorealistic is good colours, lighting, shadows. Having objects like rocks, plants and trees, scaled correctly...
