91% RAM, should i upgrade?

Recommended Posts

16gb of ram here and i get 91%+ of ram usage during a free flight mission. Should i upgrade to 32GB?

I recently went from 16 to 32 myself and although I must admit I don't really see/feel improvement, figures show that my PC's bottleneck went from RAM to my GPU

My system kinda compares to yours, so you have an idea on what to (not) expect. (Don't expect to much of a noticable change)

System specs:

i7-8700K @stock speed - GTX 1080TI @ stock speed - AsRock Extreme4 Z370 - 32GB DDR4 @3GHz- 500GB SSD - 2TB nvme - 650W PSU

HP Reverb G1 v2 - Saitek Pro pedals - TM Warthog HOTAS - TM F/A-18 Grip - TM Cougar HOTAS (NN-Dan mod) & (throttle standalone mod) - VIRPIL VPC Rotor TCS Plus with ALPHA-L grip - Pointctrl & aux banks <-- must have for VR users!! - Andre's SimShaker Jetpad - Fully adjustable DIY playseat - VA+VAICOM

Id say yes go for it. the extra ram will help and it will be used. even if it doesn't noticeably improve your in-game framerate.

Your advantage here is that you're already running high-speed ddr4 ram. so if you decided 6 months from now to upgrade your CPU and mobo. or anything else in your pc. Those ram chips will still work great for you.

how are you measuring that?

windows will take advantage of available ram and use it for temporary storage. even if it’s not needed by an application (like dcs).

to measure dcs ram usage, take a look at the “working set” size. that’s the amount of ram the process is actually using while it’s “working”

A bit OT but macOS has a feature in it's Process Manager called "RAM pressure".

I wish Windows was more precise and open to users when it comes to HW ressources and how they are used.

Anyway, you can turn either way, they all point to "Go 32GB" imho.

I had some issues with 16Gb RAM, Mostly fine for single-player missions, but if you go for multiplayer missions, fps was like 10-15fps. once i upgraded to 32Gb, fps changed to 60+.

Of course, my system was not bottlenecked by CPU or GPU when I used 16GB.

thanx guys, i just got a new SSD dedicated to DCS only, after that i will upgrade to 32gb as well. DCS is the most demanding software/game/sim i ever encountered..

500% increase in fps from adding RAM?

what happens if you add another 16GB?

Yes, this is something I have experienced after lot of troubleshooting. My CPU or GPU was not using more than 50%, This issue only was for multiplayer servers. Singleplayer there is no such issue.

tried a lot of stuff including increasing paging size no luck, What I figured out even ram usage was not 100%,(it was more like 90%+) DCS is requesting more ram than that we can see it in processor commit size that was usually around(19-28GB).

So increasing ram size to 32 GB improved my multiplayer performance by 5 times as you stated. And no, I won't increase further if we add more ram.

I went with my new build a couple of years ago with 32GB RAM 3200Mhz (2x16GB kit). Before this my system, had 12GB RAM which struggled with big missions/multiplayer. If I were just playing mainstream AAA titles then I would say 16GB system RAM is fine however for DCS I would recommend 32GB total system RAM as optimal for DCS. That is what I would decide today and moving forward.

I honestly dont know why this topic is being hammered up & down the Forum over and over again.

No one argues about GPUs, a 5700XT is better than a 5600XT, a 2080ti is king of the Hill and a 960GTX is far off.

SSD over HDD and a i7-860 is a little weak, a 4790 still ok and new Ryzens or 9th series are pretty decent.

All they argue about is amount of RAM .

It's in the recommended hardware specs !

It's beyond me why it's being questioned again and again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Two questions, please:

1) - I can buy another stick of the same maker/speed 8GB single channel RAM and it will work? If I have two RAM sticks I don't need-dual channel?

2) - I would place the second RAM stick in the third slot, even though it's single-channel? (I don't want to be like that boob in the Verge video)

Thank you.

I built my own PC, but this RAM stuff bends my brain.

You can, for both questions... but no one will tell you it will 100% work !

Do not ask for a certainty no one can give you.

It's an either/or and you have to try to see.

Best to buy where you can return the module w/o trouble if it won't work.

You will then have slot2+4 in 128bit config and slot3 in 64bit ( half the speed ), but that is not unsupported in general. Best would be 2 new sticks in 1+3 to have both channels in double rank and also both in dual channel config @128bit

BTW:: !Double Rank is not the same as Dual Channel, they are 2 totally different things all together.!

sad.gif Uhhhhh...

You are past my brain power on that one. I appreciate the help and what you're saying... but I don't really understand it.

Assuming I'm just smart enough to know how to plug my PC into the wall without killing myself, what is the easiest way to get 2x8GB RAM working well on my MB?

I don't mind buying 2x8GB new if that's best. (I can give the 8GB I have now to a buddy.) If I do buy 2x8GB new, what designation of RAM is best? My MB only handles 2400mhz max speed, and 8GB per slot. So that part is easy.

2x 8GB... single, dual, reduced calories? Any suggestions?

Oh well, let's start over with a plan :book:

How much RAM is in your system NOW and how many sticks are in the machine and which slot(s).

What is the speed of your current, inserted, RAM

What have you already bought ?

In general:

With Desktop systems, you always buy and use RAM modules in pairs, either 2 or 4 of them.

Where they go into the board depends on the board's layout, the safe bet is 2 sticks go into 2nd and 4th slot and not into 1st and 3rd. If you have 4 modules, hey, that's easy then, all slots populated ;)

To make it easier for us, list your motherboard details and your CPU as well, that does matter to find out what makes sense and what is a waste of money.

CPU-Z will help you to find the technical details, so does HWinfo. Both are free and come w/o garbage attached. Install both and look into them, they will tell you all my/our questions regarding specs and make/vendor of your hardware.

My MB is an Asus Prime B250M-A, socket 1151, with an i5-6500. It will take 4x8GB 2400mhz.

I now have 1x8GB Ballistix Sport LT 2400 (BLS8G4D240FSB) in Slot #1

Video card is a 2060 Super 8GB

The long and the short is I'd like 16GB or 32GB just for DCS to help things along.

OK, that's some info.

Since 2400MHz is not that expensive, my vote goes for a clean 32GB kit 2400MHz and you give/sell that stick you have to your buddy if he can use it.

BTW, slot #1 is not ideal interms of signal clarity, #2 is the recommended one and slotv #4 for the 2nd module if you only use 2 modules in dual channel @128bit( twice the bandwidth compared to single channel )

If you'd stick 1 module in slot1 and the second module in slot#2 you would have single channel / half bandwidth @64bit bus bandwidth = wrong, not recommended too for signal clarity.

If you want to play safe, use the QVL from Asus site of your mobo and pick a kit that is recommended. It could just be that you cannot nuy that exact kit anymore, B250 is a few years old.

I think, at 2400MHz, any kit with that speed should work. Kingston Value is a good start for budget RAM. If you want to spend a bit more, choose a kit with a lower CL rating. CL14 is faster than CL16 for example. CL is a latency value btw.
