PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

Recommended Posts

Interesting. Hopefully Miles might chime in with details on why the covering of the Rift S sensor does not effect tracking.

Not Miles :). But given that wmr headsets can track with 2 cameras you just dont need all of them on the riftS. It might track smoother and you might need that camera to track the hand controllers in some positions but for basic use its likely redundant.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

Hey Bearfoot,

Early on in the S release, I saw in an interview with Oculas that the upper camera was for tracking controllers above your head that are out of the field of view of the other cameras. I have not since been able to confirm or deny that info. I have not herd any issues and I send out by far the most mounts for the S. My personal guess, and I emphasize "guess" is that the upper camera can not be critical for tracking, because most of the time it would just be seeing a nondescript white ceiling without any discernible features to track.

Thank for asking, wish I had a better answer.

GUI Update:

Here is a WIP preview of the Voice Assist, which I believe will be the most helpful part of the GUI.

Ok my report 1 day after receiving PointCTRL:pilotfly::thumbup::thumbup::cheer3nc::bounce::thumbsup:

Ok, seriously it is amazing in many ways. First, of all, the support Miles and others provide. I had the pleasure of getting help from Miles this afternoon as I had a few issues and misunderstandings.

- first, the FCU doesn't shine brightly because your eyes can't see IR light, but cameras can :megalol: I only saw these little red lights. I thought I did something wrong. Miles solved that problem in 2 seconds.

- As I am blind in my left eye I think it threw the calibration off somewhat in the sense I see less on the left side in my VR view. Miles was great to help make sure I did the calibration correctly.

I flew a couple of missions this evening and the difference is clear. I take off and during the first 30 seconds of my climb out, I already have most of my weapons and other systems configured. it is so easy to flip switches or go through DDI's.

This adds such a major sense of immersion for me, it was what was missing.

Thanks, Miles for a great product which will only get better. It has renewed my motivation to fly DCS.

Nice. Glad to hear this great device is rolling out to even more users.

Any ETA on the FW support for the extension headers? Would love to solder myself up a Buttonprint to attach to the Rift S. The 6 extra DX Buttons will be helpfull for many things.

And if you ever need a EMS in EU, feel free to contact me. Maybe we can give a good quote which may surprise you.

Yea, FoxDelta designs some amazing stuff. I always enjoy the YouTube post of his latest projects.

The PointCTRL code continues to grow, especially now with interfacing the GUI and Voice Assist.

I had success in freeing up some of the 32kb of memory with simpler computations and trimming some variables. I should be close to having enough room for the Aux Push Buttons to be seen as a joystick. This way, you can us other controllers buttons as modifiers to gain more than six buttons.

It will also have the ability for multiple simultaneous button presses that emulate another single button press.

Also working on multiple functionality of buttons based on what DCS mode or function is active.

Example: Visor up = button 1, Visor down = button 2. NVGs on = Buttons 1 and 2 together, After NVGs are on, Gain Increase = button 1 , Gain Decrease = button 2.

Eject = buttons 1, 2, and 3 on each button bank simultaneously.

Any other button functionality you guys can think of would be great! As soon as the GUI/VA is in beta, I will move to the Aux button banks.

Thanks for the question Gruman,

Miles

Amazing!

What would be great is if we could delegate important "game/sim" hotkeys to this device, freeing up our HOTAS to actually do more aircraft things. E.g., I have the two VR zoom levels bound to the TMWH pinky switch. Or I have labels on/off bound to a joystick button. Same with F10 map etc.

Hey Miles. Great to hear. Just checking: The 6 Aux buttons will be DX buttons first, right? Free assignment within DCS Controller Menu? Any additional coding is optional? Just asking, because assigning fixed combos / makros would make the buttons less flexible for the individual needs of the pilots :music_whistling:

Yes, Those were just examples, PointCTRL will show up in DCS as a 32 button HID joystick and you are free to map the way we always do.

This is what I was thinking, options can be disabled, so a long press does not interfere with a "hold to execute" functions like VR zoom is used.

The VRBs are still going to happen, but they will have to wait for PointCTRL v2

As always, feedback and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Especially now, that I don't get much time to test things for myself anymore.

Thanks for the opportunity to clarify Grumman,

Hmm, I received plenty of Double Sided Tape , Couple zip ties and a cable holder (with double sided tape) with my order. Did you doublechecked the shipping container? Maybe it was stuck to the top or similar. Maybe it was simply forgotton or lost while in customs.

I replaced the double sided tape with 3M Dual Lock (Industrial Velcro), so I can free the RiftS Camera. Way better stability than the supplied double sided tape as well. Just cover the whole bottom of the HMS with it. Then apply enough of the dual lock / velcro arround the top camera.

Did you find a small bag with the items that Gruman described? I will be parked in discord voice for most of the day if you would like some live assistance.

After using PointCTRL for a week every evening :) I want to share an observation. When doing the calibration, the last step is a 5 point calibration where you put your hand out as far as you think it take to reach that point. Initially I would not stick my hand out that far but still could position the mouse over the button easily. In recent days I found that actually sticking my hand out further gives it a more realistic or natural feeling and is more accurate.

I love these controllers

Apologies, So to confirm, you did not receive the battery charge monitor, or the extra Rift S HMS mount either? If not, will get them in the mail today with the mounting accessories. I must have been helping Carol with the packaging and shipping that day.

To everyone

Reference using Velcro. I found I could not get a stable enough connection with it, and some of the industrial stuff raised the HMS quite a bit. I will try the brand Gruman used. The hard hook and loop I tried in the past required to much pressure to engage/disengage.

Would you guys like to see a form of Velcro in addition to the double faced tape?

Thanks,

Miles

P.S. I just cleaned out my PM box again.
