HELP!!!

Hello all,

Looking to see what settings others are running in the NVIDIA control panel as it seems to change quite often.

I am currently running:

NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL

Game Ready Driver

Version: 445.75

Release: 3/23/2020

Some specs if anyone has some suggestions on Steam and ingame settings as well:

Intel Core i7-8700 3.2GHz (not K)

12MB L3 Cache

Corsair DDR 64gb RAM

XPG GAMMIX 1TB S11 Pro 3D NAND PCIe NVMe Gen3x4 M.2 2280 SSD as C:

Crucial 1TB SSD as D:

Zotach RTX 2080 TI video

Samsung Odyssey + WMR VR headset

Thats the main components.

But just having a hard time in getting my VR squeezed out. I am sure someone will say to upgrade the O+ and the Processor... Those are next. But I should be able to pull more than 32 FPS with that 2080 TI card.

If anyone would be so kind to post their NVIDIA, Steam and DCS configs, I would greatly appreciate it. Im to the point now of wiping out everything and starting over.

I fly the Tomcat more than anything, but do have the FC3, AV-8, F-18, F-16, P-51 modules among others. NTTR, PG, CAUC, Normandy maps.

The only mods I am running are the VR Hangar screen, my own music tracks (dont run them much) Opening theme mod, the Shaders IC Pass mod. All those are controlled through OGVME. Also run SRS.

Thanks for any help!

Well post your settings and we can go from there.. I think not being able to OC your CPU is your bottleneck..

You are somewhat crippled by that CPU.

If you could replace it with say an 8700k with a decent cooler and clock it up to somewhere between 4.5-5 GHz you would see your biggest gain.

Yes I guess I am the someone that says CPU.

:smilewink:

Nvidia Control Panel - just set a profile for DCS to " Prefer Maximum Performance". Leave all others to default.

In game settings - just start low and work up - maybe load up the VR preset and go from there.

The biggest hit in performance comes from MSAA, Clouds, and Shadows.

Also for your VR headset in any SS you set. Start low.

hi DBurne, I too have issues with the new drivers 445.78 and the 445.75 my VR fps tanked I was at 45 to 70 on all the maps, then when I updated to the latest, my FPS dropped to an abysmal 6 to 15 fps unplayable. I had to roll all the way back to 442.74 and now my VR FPS is back to a playable frame rate.

yes clean install was done I tested back and forth from 442.74 all the way to 445.78. and its definitely NVIDIA drivers.

Yea I was afraid the CPU was an issue... Actually, knew it was. LOL

But shouldnt I still be able to get some decent frames with that 2080TI?

I can run at about 30-35 fps normal with a little overclock in Firestorm.

DCS is way more CPU bound than GPU bound.

So one of the things Im looking for info on is in the WMR setup screen settings.

Should I be running Automatic, 60hz or 90hz?

Attached pics show current settings... I know I am all out of whack right now. lol

OMG! your hz is irrelevant with your settings, but leave it at 90hz!

in game set PD 1.0

set steam resolution per eye to 100% and then slow start adding features/resolution.

only add resolution to steam or use PD dont use both .. you are running at something over 300% in total... leave in game Force IPD Distance unchecked. I would also drop shadows to flat

also check out my VR settings for nVidia (which should be similar enough as to make no difference) even though i run the reverb

Upgrade that CPU bud... promise you you’ll never look back. no reason to spend that much on a graphics card and bottleneck the piss out of it.

It literally does not matter how much you spend on the GPU. This is how a bottleneck works. Just because the GPU pipe is massive and eats pixels for breakfast, doesn’t mean the CPU can keep up and give you what you need: adequate frame times from both CPU AND GPU. This translates to that butter smooth experience you want in the headset.

I know you say you should get more than 32 FPS, but your performance sounds about right to me. If you don’t believe me, get fpsVR for 5 bucks and check your CPU frametimes, guaranteed the graph is in the red and CPU frametimes are absolutely through the roof compared to GPU with your setup. Raw single core clock speed is what you need, 5GHz is the norm now.

Maybe this isn’t what you wanted to hear, but 5ghz would solve all of your issues, guaranteed.

So here is the benchmark that I get on my system...

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/26134399

What would be a recommended processor to upgrade to? I am looking at either an i7 9700K or 8700K. I am just not sure which one I should go with or if there is something better.

My MOBO is the Asus Prime B360M-A.

@stuartaston

Thank you again for all your help with this. I work in IT, but just not that up to date on the processors in gaming nowadays! LOL

Funny thing though is the 8700 I currently have is same price if not more expensive than the 8700K/9700K that I am looking at.

Again though, I appreciate all your help.

I used your settings last night and just had such bad clarity and shimmering in the Hoggit server, I had to up some things to be able to even read the cockpit test clearly without zooming in.

Don't think your gonna have much luck overclocking a k cpu with that motherboard....

"Well, for starters B360 boards don’t support CPU or memory overclocking, even with an unlocked-K processor. This means auto overclocking features such as Multicore Enhancement don’t exist either."

Yea, I did see that the board is not a favorite for overclocking. I am hoping the 9700K will not need the overclocking right now until I can upgrade the mobo and get a liquid cooler next. Any recommendation on a MOBO?

You should buy whatever is the cheapest K series flagship processor from the last 4 generations. Skylake(6700k), kaby lake(7700k), and coffee lake(8700k) + coffee lake refresh(9900k), as they all have the same exact per core architecture minus a little bit of L$ here and there. Point is, at the same ghz they will all have the exact same performance in DCS since it is wholly single thread bound.

You can consistently get a 9900ks up to 5.5 ghz if you only care about gaming stability (not prime95 24/7). You can get a 6700k up to 5 ghz consistently with the same parameters. So 4 generations you can get about a 10% performance increase max, so don't feel afraid at all to buy an older cpu if you can get a deal. But, generally, the resel market for CPUs is shit so it will probably just make the most sense to get a 9900k(s).

Also, disable hypthreading. It takes a non negligible amount of resources away from the logical cpu running the bottlenecked DCS thread.

You can also get about 5% single thread perf increase by disabling spectre/meldown mitigations either via inspectre or Windows official registry settings (inspectre just uses those registry values).
