1.5.8 and 2.2.0 to 2.5 transition Discussion

I have 1.5 and 2.2 both installed on my 120ish SSD drive. I'd like to install 2.5 on the same drive. Empty space is about 4 GB. Can I manually move the DCS 2.2 and DCS 1.5 folders to HDD (freeing the requested space on my SSD) to be able to use it as a repository instead of downloading everything (DCS 2.5) from the ED's server?

Yes you can.

BUT you also need to "tell" DCS where you have moved your old installations.

=> Do that by editing the relevant "Path" keys in your Windows registry; refer to c0ff's post #63.

Without this very important 2nd step, your DCS 2.5 installer won't locate the moved DCS's and will re-download all.

Pretty sure I have this right, but just to be sure:

Currently I have the Release and Alpha on my SSD

The beta is on a mechanical drive due to lack of space on the SSD.

It sounds as though going forward the Beta will get upgraded to 2.5 beta then 2.5 release, so I should:

Move the Alpha to the mechanical drive

Move the Beta to the SSD

Does that sound right?

So it sounds like if I have both 1.5-release and 2.2 installed I might as well uninstall one of them as I only need one to move to 2.5.

I only really fly in 1.5 as I use 2.2 to stay up to date with graphical improvements. So bye bye 2.2!

I wouldn't do that, there is stuff in 2.2 that is not in 1.5 and that will all need to be downloaded again to get to 2.5 if you have removed 2.2

You should be aware that removing 2.2 will trigger a new download of the Nevada map of about 50GB. If you keep 2.2 the installation will use the 2.2 folders as source. :music_whistling:

For those that have missing reg keys and you are unsure how to add

them I have attached a zip file with an reg file in it. With all 3 DCS branches set

On the reg file, the version of openalpha says 1.5 ... is that correct?

Thanks

I am very excited and looking forward to playing the new 2.5 and having everything

all in one area.

I do not know if it will help with any of my crashing problems, but I can only hope.

I started to think that my old 4 gig 680 gpus were causing all of my problems

and that if I bought a 1080ti that it may solve whatever driver issue I have, but

try and find a 1080ti right now for the normal price of 699

I know one thing for sure, if I could get my hands on a 1080ti, within one month they

would come out with a 2080ti that would have a 130% better performance ratio and I would

be going nuts. EVGA used to have a upgrade policy, but I have not bought a new

gpu in 4 years as I have not needed one. Time will tell !!

Thank You so much for the update on how the upgrade to 2.5 will happen.

It's too late... I messed around with UltraMFCD and didnt exclude it from virus scan and it killed everything DCS... I'm now reinstalling 1.5 :(

The question has been asked several times without a answer. Are we going to have to recreate all mission made in 1.5.8 and 2.2.0 for 2.5 or just open them in the ME and re-save? TC

or just open them in the ME and re-save

The new Caucasus map has more trees and forests and some of those are in places that were empty before, so chances are some of your ground units formerly standing on empty ground are now in the woods. So you'll most likely have to modify at least some missions, instead of just resaving them.

It says

"1 stage: Beta-version. 1.5.8 Open Beta will be updated to 2.5.0 Open Beta. Updater will check 2.2.0 (Alpha) and add necessary modules to 2.5.0. Then Open Alpha 2.2.0 will be uninstalled (user will be prompted about 2.2.0 removing).

So I guess I am confused....doesn't this say it will update 2.2.0 to 2.5?

Yes, It will make the use of 2.2 but not in a way you understand. The guy still needs 1.5.8 Beta to initiate the process, 'cause that's the only build which gets the update first (that's what the "1st stage" is all about), the 1.5.8 stable build following somewhat later. So for the time being, his 2.2 folder will act only as a big, local file repository tu pull stuff from, it won't be updated to anything in itself (that actually applies to all three stages/cases).

Move the Beta to the SSD

You can convert your Stable into Beta with relevant command, no need to move anything then.

Yes:

Some time (maybe one-two weeks, we hope no more) for wide test of this procedure.

2 stage: Release version. 1.5.8 release updated to 2.5.0. User will be prompted before update about saving 1.5.8 Final version in the separate directory.

I'm still hoping that the Beta will drop tonight and the Release version on the 31st.

The only reason they are doing the Beta first, from what I can tell, is to test the deploy and upgrade process without killing everyone's Release versions.

ED, regarding:

Home folders (Saved Games\DCS) remains the same (Saved Games\DCS and Saved Games\DCS.openbeta). New Saved Games\DCS.release_1_5 will be created for 1.5 Final version and all content will be copied into it from Saved Games\DCS. We also strongly suggest to remove Saved Games\DCS\Config\options.lua and make graphic tuning from scratch using DCS GUI because of 1.5 and 2.5 renders are significantly different.

If I'm updating 1.5 standard and I also have 2.2 will it copy the options.lua across from 2.2 to the updated 1.5>>2.5 version? In other words, do I really have to recreate all my old 2.2 options again?
