Here is a list of the maximum ranges of the long range SAMs in DCS. I'm currently doing tests, and there will be updates as I gather data. All launches are hits.

48N6-133km; Pyotr Velikiy.

HHQ-9-99km; Type 052C Destroyer.

SM-2-87km; Oliver Hazzard Perry Class, Ticonderoga Class.

MIM-104-74km; Patriot.

5V55-71km; SA-10, Moskva, Pyotr Velikiy.

HQ-16-54km; Type 054A Frigate.

9M38M1-37km; SA-11.

9M317-29km for hit, but can launch at 43km; Type 052B Destroyer.

At the least for the bold one, it seems right to me.

As like mentioned at other thread, that was the maximum range at which the Pyotr Velikiy's SAMs engaged me.

(Although it was measured on screen with measuring tape.)

F-14B flying straight to SAM (naval), at 44.000 ft altitude.

73 nm ~ 135 km

No, I didn't, and I've always used high. Are they really? What changes?

i think max ranges increases with skill. so the higher the skill, the greater the distance they engage at. it's not a huge difference, but if you compare lowest to highest skill, it should be obvious.

The Pyotr Velikiy, uses the SA-N-6 Grumble, not the SA-10.

And SA-N-6 Grumble is the NATO codename for... Fort M F using the 5V55 missile, the F i Fort M F Basically designates flota or fleet version of the missile

Yes it is. It's just a case of getting the codename correct against the particular ships in game.

More importantly, the SA-N-6 on the PV, will detect and shoot down Harpoon.

The SA-10 on the Moskva, will do neither.

What is your speed and altitude and relative bearing to the SAMs? I think those should matter.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

I tried F-16C VS SA-10 in the same situations as usual, with all units (ground and air) at excellent skill level, but I still just got the 75km I got with high for aircraft, average for vehicles. Am I missing something?

AFAIK, skill level, relates to reload time.

Are you looking for, max SAM range in a single situation, or max launch range, which will have a huge number of variable, e.g.a SM-2 will launch at a much greater range for a 2000 kt target at 80000', than a 458 kt target at 48'. (Anti ship missiles). Aircraft, different again.

sams do definitely fire earlier (therefor at longer range) on higher skill, but it could be due to faster target acquisition. this does maybe not show with the very long range sams, because if it fires 3 seconds later the range to target will be relatively similar.

with shorter range sams it is more obvious!

ps: at least that was how it worked since now. maybe there were changes in the last few patches, but there was nothing in the patchnotes...

I find that skill makes no difference to firing ranges.

Altitude, on the other hand, does make a big difference.

And how did you find that? Maybe it's SAM specific?

Right side = Excellent

Left side = Average

By flying at target ships (Grumble), repeatedly, at different settings and altitudes.

Also ECM pods make a big difference, to detection ranges.

Can you expand on that point? I was under the impression ECM didn't help that much with the double digit sams.

Could you also upload something so we can compare? (I'm on latest open beta)

All I can do is give an example. (Stable).

Harrier. Moskva, SA-10B Grumble. Waypoint launch distances.

41300' Av/Ex, 40.3 nm. (Note P.V. SA-N6 Grumble, 69 nm. ECM had no effect. (If you forget to load a pod)) Interestingly, When attacking the P. V. from a longer range, (100 nm), it detected and fired the shorter range, SA-10B Grumble at 40 nm. I've never seen this before and it shouldn't have it.

26000' Av/Ex 35.3 nm. (ECM 28.0 nm).

6000' Av/Ex 29.0 nm. (ECM 23.0 nm).

Therefore, Average and Excellent skill are identical. (ECM on, in brackets).

50'................No launch.

Su 34, distances were slightly longer, about 2 nm.

OP is looking for max distance. I'm only looking for differences in experience (none).

You could be right there. I never use it, but with the SA-10B, it has an effect.

Well, I take it sometimes with the harrier or other AC and "hope" it works. Which I guess feels like RL pilots would have to hope for since its an ever evolving battle.

I've seen claims in DCS both ways that this pod or that pod work, don't work etc. Or even this pod works against single digit sams but not double digit (which makes sense from an IRL perspective).
