Has there been any word on how EDGE will effect the Georgia map, performance wise?

 

We have no idea that the renderer will even work with the map. In theory it should work with the map so we should probably see improvements with regards to FPS, but we wont be getting any of the eyecandy since the art assets would remain the same. Please take note that Im speculating from what 'little' information has been released. Since this is ED we are talking about everything is subject to change.

So there is a chance it won't work with it? What happens if it doesn't work?

Well, it probably will work, it must work, otherwise non Nevada buyers will be without a map to play on.

Let's just hope we get the same or better FPS in Georgia with it.

since ED is adapting everythings on one level (eg: FC3 to DCS 1.2.6 Level) we can pretty much be sure that they will put the old map into EDGE as well...everythings else would be senseless.

As far as I know, the old map will be rendered with the old engine and only Nevada will use the new image renderer.

 

It has been stated by Matt, at least once, that the current map would have to be redone from scratch to put it into EDGE. For that reason, it is not planned to redo the old map in EDGE.

But they will have to do it - are there any other such large maps? Caucasus is classic.

If they leave it as is, it would be very weird - it would mean EDGE (better graphic) is reserved only for small, tiny map. It'd mean in practice for most gamers nothing changed at all, because they won't play all the time Nevada only.

I did not hunt for the quote, but it would appear that ED does not agree with you.

I hope we get some old effects back! :o) Like appropriate CBU effects, etc.

I hope we get some new effects that affect gameplay such as raindrops on the canopy and fogging, so we can make use of those canopy defog and windscreen wiper switches :D

Explosions, smoke, flares, dust, contrails, snow, rain, and heat blur all need updating. Maybe we'll hear more when it's finally integrated into the sim?

I would imagine we wont see much of those till EDGE is in game and they can tune them for performance and quality.

Well, 'everything is subject to change' but if you consider that the map will have to be redone completely then it makes more sense to create a new 'theater of operations' than to spend the same amount of time/money/resources to re-create the one that many here are already bored with.

Renderer != Art Assets

 

In theory old art assets could be (re)used and integrated into a new renderer. This would result in minimal work for the 3d artists. It would not result in any significant visual improvements but at least ED's playerbase would not be split in two.

True, but if you can have better art in the new engine, why would you want to use old stuff? I think to do the old map justice, you would want to build it from scratch.

I think the reasoning behind the size of the map is basically just because its the first one to use EDGE, I believe Wags already stated the map size could be as big as a developer had time to develop. But for the first one out of the gates to get EDGE up to speed, it makes sense to start small.

The current map will still work but it will not take advantage of any improvements brought by EDGE.

Are you implying that they should throw Caucasus away and let the NTTR be the only map (just because it looks better)?

 

This thread gets really frustrating when folks don't read the posts.. It has been stated multiple times that DCS will continue to work using the old map.. It doesn't die or anyhting, it just won't look as good as EDGE...

 

So we can all continue to use the old map and the graphics it has... And then EDGE will be the FIRST new map with updated graphics and engine..

Calm down please, perhaps you misunderstood the meaning of my post. I know that map is still going to be usable. I just wanted to say, as the reaction to your "why would you want to use old stuff", that "why" is because it's easier to port the assets instead of spending time redoing the current map. Not like that would be impossible, but DCSW needs to have a free map in the meantime. ;)

But that makes no sense, it would only make a little bit of sense if the map is unusable in EDGE and you wanted to get it in there faster, otherwise, if you are rebuilding the map, new art assets would make more sense... what would be the benefit otherwise?
