Escorts

I have this mission (attached) and the two tanker escorts are often attacked by some su33. The thing is that the escorts wait until the su33 shoot down the tanker until they return fire.

 

how can i make them smarter and just intercept the attackers?

Have you tried increasing the "Engage Dist" on the "Escort" waypoint action to like 80 or 100km?

 

Also, the Escorts have no BVR missiles loaded, so any agressors will be able to fire BVR missiles on the tanker before the escorts can fire on the agressors.

Engage dist is almost 40nm so no issue there i think.

Havent tried, i need the ext tanks.

 

The thing is that the agressors only hace heat missiles as well.

As I don`t own the MC2000 and the orginal miz takes a long time

 

I deleted all except the tanker, 2x escort and the su33's

 

Added under "Set Option" by the escort : ROE -> WEAPON FREE

 

The escort attacked one Su33 and destroyed it

The second Su33 attacked the tanker - the rocket missed the tanker

The escort attacked the second Su33 and destroyed it

Hi,

 

I guess within the limit of the Engage Distance

 

Would test some different positions of the escort planes with greater distances (some miles) and e.g. one ahead

 

Would test what will happen, when one SU33 comes from the left and one comes from the right

I am not sure - will the escort separate and attack both or stay together and attack one ?

I thought “Weapons free” is the default behavior if nothing else is specified, in an AI only group...

I thought so too, but it seems setting it manually does work.

 

The drawback is that I have civil transport flights from the opposite side and they try to shoot them down too.

By default the ROE is "only designated."

 

Combined with the default "CAP" or "CAS" taskings this will basically amount to weapons free, which is probably what is generating the confusion.

 

The "weapons free" ROE will cause the target to go after any hostile target they detect, from what I can tell, ignoring other assigned tasking (such as their escort task, or an order to attack a specific target) This might be a band-aid solution but if you start trying to ask for more complex behaviors or the mission becomes more complex you may encounter some issues.

 

I don't have time to check your .miz at the moment but I'll play with the escort tasking a bit and see if I can figure out what might be going wrong (if I remember later.)

I think this has to do with late activation units. If they are activsted from start then escort task works fine, but if they are activated late then it wont work.

 

Anyone experienced the same?

Haven't tested. My advice would be to try using AI TASK PUSH and triggered actions as a workaround if you're experiencing an issue.

 

Remember also if you modify the flight plan of the aircraft being escorted, you may also need to revisit the escort tasking to define the last waypoint where the target is escorted. On an extremely long flight, your escort aircraft may run out of fuel long before a larger jet like an E-3A/C-17 etc.

 

Other issues can arise if both aircraft are not flying within acceptable parameters. For example, an F-16 is going to have a terrible time trying to fly with a C-130 doing 220 knots at 20,000 feet.

 

If you still can't get things to behave, there are 3rd party scripting options such as MOOSE which have an escort class built in, if you're up for writing a little simple .lua. Its creator FlightControl has made an unbelievable number of comprehensive video tutorials and sample mission files available to help.

The thing is that on long flights it seems no one does what their told to do. Even two viggens reach with plenty of fuel remaining refused to attack a group of ships.

 

Everything works fine on short missions.
