Interesting read Foxbat vs Eagle during ODS

Recommended Posts

Very good read, thx for sharing.

That was a lot of Sparrows gone garbage, and a lot of misses.

You're welcome guys.

Thats IrAF claimed for downing an Eagle quite shocking me. I'm also surprised that R-40 despite its semi active still tracking after lost locked if that info was true.

The IrAF did shoot down an F18C with an R40 from a Foxbat during ODS.

I read the OP article this morning myself, it was excellent. Reminded me of the article about the double shoot down of the Mig25s, and how the F15C pilot shot so many Aim7 (all of them IIRC), that he was thinking he was somehow going to have to try and gun the Mig25 (difficult due to its speed and acceleration), when he finally got it with an Aim9. The Mig25 pilot evaded several Aim7 and at least 2 AIM9 IIRC, as the Sidewinder back then LOVED Russian flares.

Im quite intrigued about such a parameter for the weapons in DCS actually, that they have a risk of just going dud on you. And when not flying, you could entertain yourself with threads about given coalition bias, hehe.

Yea it would be interesting. We already have the option to include or exclude random failures in flight already so to some extent the structure is already there. You just need to extend the failures to include weapon systems.

And extend the failures to multiplayer as well, where they are not available at all :(

Is this sarcasm or serious? If the latter, adversaries makes untruthful claims all the time when engaged in war. Welcome to the real world.

Again, cannot ascertain if its sarcasm or not. Nothing in the article indicated that the missile still tracked after the radar lock was dropped.

The article is a total mess to me. It speaks at one point about F-15C then F-15E and F-15C...

It only mentions the F-15E on two occasions:

- To explain how the Iraqis were emboldened after engaging the escorts of a F-15E strike package on al-Qaim

- Describing how the Iraqis thought they were being engaged by F-15Es with Mavericks while at the runway, when in fact were the Sparrows hitting the ground.

Seems perfectly fine with me and I never got confused by reading the article, although I knew about the facts from other sources.

Time to practice some reading comprehension, dudes :)

No its not sarcasm, why do you think it is? I just knew that such claim exist that the Eagle actually does not have a clean record from A2A combat according IrAF from this article. Probably true and probably no.... (shrug)

I misunderstand about R40 still tracking after radar lock was dropped, it says it was gone ballistic but still hit left engine of the F-15. Isnt it indicated its still tracking? Or was it just pure luck? Or all of this just IrAF claimed? (again.... Shrug)

Going ballistic means that the missile lost its steering guidance and is now flying ballistically without steering.

The IrAF claimed a daylight A2A shootdown of a Tornado during Desert Storm before they even started flying daylight missions if I remember correctly.

They also claimed over 80 Tomcats destroyed during the Iran-Iraq War, even though Iran only had 79...
