SeaQuark presents: KOREA! (F-86 vs MiG-15 PvP)

Just a placeholder in case this is something someone else reports as well but...

I took off in a Sabre last night and I was the only person online but just as I passed the airfield boundary I was shot down. There was no gunfire, just two explosions and my aircraft breaking up and a message saying I have been shot down as if I was killed by missiles. I was carrying just rockets and the take-off was gentle so not likely to be excessive Gs (and would I be told I had been shot down if I just overstressed it?)

Any chance my own airfield defences targetted me or enemy units were next to the field and uncontested?

Tried to connect to the server but I have a mysterious bug..The front wheel for F86 control does not work..Tested on another server and everything was ok ..

For now, the server doesn't allow the "Simplified" easy nosewheel steering option.

The realistic way to use the nosewheel steering is to press down the nosewheel steering button before applying rudder, and holding it down until you have completed your turn, otherwise it will "lose track" and you will have to cycle the rudder pedals while holding the button down to recover it. A minimum amount of throttle is also required to power the nosewheel; if your throttle is on idle for too long during a turn, your nosewheel may "go to sleep."

DCS has Simplified Nosewheel Steering on by default in the Special options menu for the F-86, and many people don't realize they are learning an incorrect method of taxiing the plane.

Any chance my own airfield defences targetted me or enemy units were next to the field and uncontested?

Hmm. This is very weird. I haven't encountered anything like that, although one other person has told me their Sabre once blew up randomly upon first spawning in (not in the air). It may be related to the flak script.

If you encounter it again, it would help to know what A/C slot you were using when you encountered it.

Any chance of adding allowing a second SRS radio channel in the F-86?

I am not asking for something unhistoric, I know the Sabre only had the one radio, but I want to be able to set up custom channels for my squadron to use apart from the ones you have pre-loaded. Unless I am mistaken, which is quite possible, I cannot use the SRS facility of adding a text file of custom frequencies to the SRS directory because it will not work with the primary radio (except with FC3 aircraft). Here is what CiriBobsays in thread https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=169387

"Preset Channel Configuration

Preset channels can be created for all FC3 aircraft and all expansion radios for Non FC3.

"

He also has a video where at 3:13 he shows how custom frequences can be used on a FW190 when the server has allowed a UHF channel for SRS.

Or maybe I am just confused about how SRS works :-)

I'm not quite sure I follow you Roblex, what goal are you trying to achieve that isn't possible with the 18 channels + Guard available to you currently in the mission?

Currently my squad mostly uses Teamspeak. We have up to 8 online together and sometimes we end up split into two flights of 4 or maybe 4 pairs on opposing sides. When we do this we use the Whisper Lists on TS to allow us to talk to our flight/Wingman without bothering or confusing the others. Setting up Whisper Lists is a pain as you have to add & remove people and some people find their game has problems when they alt-tab out to TS & back.

I was thinking that if we (my squadron) had a custom set of frequencies, eg 146, 147, 148, 149,150, for the four flights and one for Squadron then when we decide to split out we just say 'Red flight take 148' and everyone in Red flight just retunes in seconds by choosing 148 from a 5 line dropdown instead of having to alt-tab out of DCS and set up all the right names in TS while hoping you were well enough trimmed to still be near the formation when you get back into DCS. Perfect trim is unlikely in a spit and you could have rolled over & crashed if you spent too long out of DCS setting up the whisper.

Yes we could just say 'Red Flight take channel 6' but the frequencies that come with the server are in no order and might be something used by another mission or another function.

My request was nothing vital and we can easily live without it, it just might make things a little easier for us and I thought it was easy to enable. From the fact we have three radios in Spectators I assumed having all three radios operational was the default and you had deliberately disabled two of them in the cockpit as the Mig & Sabre only have one radio. No problem though, just a thought and perhaps it would not work anyway.

Cannot get Comms to workonce in the air.

Sorry Seaquark, I have tried to get the solution myself and I have tried asking others but...

Why does my comms key "" stop working as soon as I take off (only tried Recon mission so far) ?

It works fine on the ground but as soon as I leave the airfield it stops doing anything and does nothing until I land again. I asked in my squad and others said they had the same problem in your server. One said he had managed to do the Recon mission but had to tune the radio to 10 (263). I have just tried that but it did nothing for me. I thought maybe I have to be in the target area but still no joy. I tried Ch1 & Ch2 while near the target; Still nothing. What am I missing?

Easy Communication is OFF on the server. You have to turn the radio on (always set to TR+G), and use your radio button in the cockpit of the plane to bring up the radio menu. I believe by default the key is: RALT+ \

As for SimpleRadio in general-- the point of SimpleRadio is to limit you to the radio options available in the cockpit. You should not need to use the overlays to pick frequencies at all, unless you are using the Spectator / Forward Observer slots to provide GCI. There is no need to alt-Tab, simply use the UHF radio in your cockpit.

Just work out with your squad which channels you will use. For instance, Flight 1 could take Channel 12, Flight 2 could take Channel 13. It is very unlikely all 18 channels will be in use.

A breakdown of the channels available follows:

CH. 1 = ATC (mandatory-- call all your take-offs and landings on this channel)

CH. 2 = MISSION (general-use, public channel for all F-86 flights)

CH. 3 = [free]

CH. 4 = [free]

CH. 5 = BOSTON CONTROL (use radio menu to call for tasking and mission information)

CH. 6 = BOMBERS (B-29 chatter can be heard on this channel if they are called in)

CH. 7 = GROUND FORCES (Boston may direct you to this channel for C.A.S. information)

CH. 8-18 = [free]

Simply pick any free channel for your flights. Switch between channels as needed.

If you are trying to reach someone and you are not sure what channel they are on, you can always use the GUARD channel to transmit to all flights. Just use sparingly, so as not to clog public airways. Whenever you turn on your radio, always turn the dial to TR+G so you can hear emergency Guard channel transmissions.

(general SimpleRadio info is posted in the Discord and Server subreddit and mission-specific channels will be listed in Briefings if available)

Additionally, feel free to use the Server's Discord channel for general socializing / non-mission voice chatting and flight planning.

SimpleRadio functionality is the same for the Red side, except instead of Channels, you manually tune to the desired frequency. See Briefing for ATC and MISSION freqs. (also, the MiG-15 does not have any Guard channel functionality)

Actually I did have the radio on TR + G, I always do, and I did try pressing the key I had programmed to activate the Mike button on the throttle (it also sends to SRS).

I am still a bit confused though as 1) The \ key works while you are on the ground warming up etc. and works when you land 2) Does using the in-cockpit mike button to bring up the menu mean it would vanish again when I release the button? That might explain why I did not notice it doing anything. If on the other hand pressing the key toggles the menu open and it stays open until I press it again then I must have something set wrongly somewhere. Is there a problem with me setting a button on my joystick to operate the key in the cockpit and allow me to talk on SRS?

At least I have an idea now of how it *should* work so I can investigate that. Thanks.

You should keep your SimpleRadio push-to-talk and mike button separate because you wouldn't want to pull up your in-game radio menu every time you talk to your wingman. Right?

This may also be causing your problem of the radio menu not working for you.

The regular \ button will work while you are on the ground because otherwise you couldn't contact your ground crew to turn on the ground power.

I have found that *clicking* on the mike button works and pressing a JS button to do the same does not. I can work with that. You are right about using the same button but I did not realise you were using the cockpit button to open the menu. All good now. Thanks.

Yesterday I managed to hop on the server. I must say I really enjoyed it, it shows how much time and effort you put into this mission. Very immersive! Some things didn’t work that well, or I didn’t find info about:

- It was a bit hard to figure out what channels/ frequencies to use for what (Huey/Sabre), but then I managed. Perhaps there should be a summary in the briefing tab.

- It wasn’t easy to find the secondary target. Boston contro said something like FH96 23 – on the map I could find FH96 but had no idea what 23 meant. Therefore I couldn’t find the secondary target.

- The primary target was easier to find, but tanks are very, very hard to destroy with 1950s weapons, and it’s next to impossible to score a direct hit. Could you perhaps replace some of he T72 wih trucks?

- Air defences were really tough, but that’s the way it should be.

- The Huey base is really far from all the action, I gave up as it took ages to get anywhere

- I couldn’t find where the radar sites were. None of the briefing maps showed any, so I had no idea where to bring those crates.

- sling loading is bugged, the Huey behaves as if it still had a sling load after release. Therefore it might be a good idea to use CTLD instead?

- I understand there are AI bombers, but the only way to find them is to have a human GCI? That is not likely to happen as there weren’t too many people on the server. Perhaps you could find some workaround so that I could inercept stuff even when I’m alone on the server?

I think the secret to populate a server is to offer possibilities and things to do even if someone is alone there. But otherwise, it’ super immersive, and I really love the atmosphere you created. I will be a regular visitor! Thank you!

Hey Reflected, I apologize, as many of the features in the mission are work-in-progress (especially the radar sites). Most people are just using the server for dogfights, kudos to you for checking out the objectives.

I am just now finishing up the new briefing pages that should cover all these features for the Blue side, hopefully this will help clarify:

yzfJSNZ.jpg

QXI6lH9.jpg

RekdMEf.jpg

As for your first point about FH9623-- that is all the information you need. The "23" aren't random numbers, that is the next level of detail in a grid reference. Once you have found FH96, imagine that square is in turn divided in 10 horizontally and vertically. Count 2/10 spaces right, then 3/10 spaces up. The secondary targets will not be the same every mission rotate, so you will need to understand a grid reference to find them.

In regards to the tanks: the Primary target is designed to be beefy, you should not expect to kill everything there by yourself or in just 1 or 2 flights. 3 or 4 Sabres with a full load of rockets should make short work of the tanks. Teamwork is highly encouraged-- you can always join the Discord to find flying buddies.

If you do find yourself on your own, the railcars and buildings make much easier targets.

Don't sweat too much about the other frequencies, CH. 1, 2, 5 are all you really need-- if you need any other channels during the mission, Boston will direct you to them.

About the Huey distances being too large-- this is the sort of thing I definitely need feedback with, since I don't fly the Huey myself. If you could suggest some possible locations for the chopper base given the radar locations above, that would be a big help.

I didn't realize sling loading is bugged. In what way is it bugged? Is it impossible to use? I had someone using it in the server a while ago.

Brilliant, thank you for the information!

The Heli pad should be somewhere halfway between Able and Baker. It's bugged in a way that the Huey behaves as if it still had the sling load on even after it was released.

Anyway, the server is absolutely brilliant, the mission is well designed, I hope it will become popular! I'll be there for sure :)

I flew around a bit today:

- Enemy troops hiding in the forest are still impossible to find/ see. They are not even shooting at me.

- I resupplied a radar station with the Huey, it went online, and the red side got 2 points for it.

- I flew to FJ10 to take photos. I was in the square, flying straight and level, yet I had no options in the F10 menu to take pictures.

OK, I'll look into both those issues.

I just successfully did that twice yesterday. Are you sure you are in the RECON plane that takes off from Kutaisi? You will have the option to (incorrectly) take the photographs soon after you start flying towards enemy airspace.

I may fire up my Sabre again to try this server, the mission looks really fun.

By the way, since it's kind of sandboxy with ground targets, including F-51s makes perfect sense as that's the major role they filled during the war. Close air support and escorting the slower choppers seems tailor made for them.

Sure thing, adding in F-51s as we speak. Been meaning to do that for a while.

EDIT: Red team will get German planes as stand-ins for Yaks and La-9s.

So I did a little test flight to resort my controls then went on the server when it wasn't busy so I wouldn't screw anyone over. Took one of the ground attack tasked Sabres (After getting startled a bit by the 'Welcome to Korea' dialogue) and went hunting for trouble. Got to the target area, switched to channel 5 and called in looking for tasking.

The radio response was not at all what I was expecting. I was guessing I'd get a Morse code sound and a text box in the corner. Nope, Boston channel called in and gave me the target grid with actual audio, which was fantastic for immersion. Checked my F-10 map, and after quickly converting old NATO Phonetic Alphabet, I headed to the target area. I flew in pretty high and looked for tracers, not a great method I know, but with me so out of practice hunting ground targets without an F-16s TGP and Ground Radar, it was the best I could come up with on short notice.

Tracers off the nose, so i followed the line down and saw a group of buildings and some anti aircraft around them. I flowed out, came around, lined up for a rocket run, and took a shell to the face and died :P. I've become too reliant on targeting aids like CCIP systems so i didn't loose my rockets early or high enough, instead wanting to get close for guaranteed hits, bad plan. Still, an interesting experience. I'll probably spend a few days rocketing dirt to practice how to do it, but Korea's definitely an interesting and fun experience.

Now I just need to sort Simple Radio out so it works and I'll be golden. Thanks SeaQuark.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, just a quick note on some possible additions to this server.

In this thread, I asked about the possibility of enabling level bombing on the Tu-95. msalama was kind enough to provide a script that works perfectly (with the caveats I describe here) . So now we have the possibility of bomber/escort/defense missions on both sides! Unless this has already been done?

BTW, I think the Normandy map offers some really interesting possibilities for a scenario featuring the F-86 and Mig-15 as well, especially if we imagine something a little later than the Korean war proper (specifically including the Tu-95!). I'm thinking that after the VE-day honeymoon/parties are over, things go awry, and the USSR decides the imperialists should not be allow to corrupt Europe, and pushes everyone out of Germany, rolling the lines back to .... Normandy. The US/UK maintain a tenuous but strong toehold there, a position made more robust by the long supplie lines the USSR needs to support such a far west frontline, plus resources stretched thin by policing Europe. With the US/UK HQ in Cherbourg, and the new frontline running just east of Cannes. To make things more interesting, maybe the post WW2 UK Labor govt goes neutral and allows the Soviets to base fighters in Southern London and Tu-95 bombers to overfly UK territory?

Apart from all this interesting theatre, one reason to adopt 2.1 is to take advantage of the patched Mig-15 flight model.
