[REPORTED] The SA page open causes massive stuttering.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I couldn't find the reason why my simulation was stuttering like hell...untill I turned off the SA page! :(

It becomes unplayable because of the stuttering. Then I soon as I turn off the page, it's gone.

Is there anyone else seeing this, is it a bug or maybe something wrong on my end?

I was in a MP server when I noticed this, with loads of people online. Maybe that could be the cause?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I've got a gaming laptop EVGA - SC15

Intel i7-7700HQ @ 2.80GHz

250Gb SSD (where DCS is)

16Gb RAM

GTX 1060 - 6Gb VRAM

Win 10 64bit

I'm using Riva Tuner Statistics Server - RTSS, to cap my framerates at 60fps. Which works fine with all the models I have, in any kind of mission SP or MP.

Can you attach your options.lua from your saved games dcs location.

I will try to use your settings and reproduce.

Thanks

Still seems ok with your settings.

Is your laptop getting hot and maybe throttling?

No, not really. I have a very high fan curve, so it never goes over 75-74 degrees celsius, I'm always carefull about that as I know laptops don't do very well with high temperatures, but I'm sure that this is not the case. I don't know what could cause this, because it doesn't happen at all with any other module, using any kind of MPCD like in the Harrier, I don't have any problems at all. Only on the SA page of the F-18.

I'll try and check more settings, maybe the amount of people on the data link or just in the server, maybe the RivaTuner, I don't know...

Anyway, thank you for your help Bignewy! Much appreciated!

Alex.

250Gb SSD (where DCS is) - Is it a fast SSD?

16Gb RAM - on heavy servers with a lot going on, you could see issues in general

GTX 1060 - 6Gb VRAM - 1060 could be struggling at times as well, try turning down draw distances and such.

Hi NineLine,

I don't know if my SSD is fast or slow. I'll find out that info.

I can join most servers, with 60 people in it, use any model I have with no problems. My FPS is always between 60 and 50-42 if there's too many explosions and such or if I'm flying near populated areas.

And for my settings, I always keep everything in a mid-low kind of settings, only use higher settings if I'm in single player.

But the point is, my gameplay never stutters like that, using any model, in any server. This only happens when I'm flying the F-18 and decide to open the SA page. It's a frenetic jumping of the FPS, with 2 or 3 massive spikes every second. It feels like I'm playing with 5 FPS or frame by frame, which becomes unplayable.

I'll try reducing my graphic settings even more and see what happen.

Thanks!

A quick test shows that SA is pretty performance heavy, especially with DL on and a lot of shared contacts.

Example mission: 3 E3s placed around the map with 18 enemy A10s, with player nearby. Offline.

SA page off: 102 FPS

SA page on: 98 FPS

SA, DL on: 85 FPS

SA and DL bring down frames by 20%, and this was a relatively simple mission. Online, it seems even worse. In 4YA PVE server, with maybe 50 active planes and multiple AWACs', SA cuts the frames in half. Like AleCisla described, it is not a uniform reduction in FPS but more of a stuttering or shuddering effect. Worse, the load is all CPU, so reducing graphics settings doesn't help much.

For comparison, the Litening pod looking at a city only cost 10 FPS.

I get this as well. But i've been getting this since DL was introduced. At 160nm zoom, it's unplayable online. It's not a fps drop, but stuttering. It's definately dependant on the number of things drawn on the MFD.

I assumed it was my cpu, (i5-2500k, OC to 4.9).

To solve it, i use the declutter option to remove all the SAM rings, and just that improves it a lot. Also, i try not to stay at 160nm when there are too many planes. 40nm or less and the stutter is almost gone.

This is definitely reproducable. Load up the mini-campaign misson ”Fighter Sweep”. Activate Datalink and fly towards waypoint 2. Not only there is some sort of memory leak or fps issue going on with the Hornet, because my fps drops from 70 to 40 half way to WP2, but it also drops 20-25 fps more right after I open the SA page. Switch back to some other page and gain those fps back. Click SA again and lose it again and so on..

Here is a video of the issue that I am seeing. This is from cold start. At the end I turn the radar page and SA page on and off and if you watch the FPS counter in the upper left you can see that this has a dramatic effect on the frames and frame times. I have vsync on and normally I have no problem staying locked at 60. Before you say its hardware, I have a 9900K at 5.1, 32GB of ram at 3600 CAS14, and a 2080TI. The game is also installed on a Samsung 970 Pro NVME drive. This same issue occurs regardless if mods are installed or not and it also does not matter if VSYNC is enabled or not.

I can also confirm that this is NOT an isolated issue with just me. Several of the guys in my virtual squadron, 64th Aggressors, are having the same issue.

Do you have a track, was it in MP or SP? If MP was it a busy server or busy mission? A track or mission would be helpful.

Hi NineLine,

I'm sorry, I didn't see the thread going this far...

I had the track and I thought about sending it, but I have to delete my MP tracks all the time and I end up losing that one too. (Which is another thing I need to find out how to stop, as I have sometimes 5Gb of data filling up my SSD from MP tracks recorded... if only we could have the option of not saving them? That would be great!)

Anyway, I don't know if we could call a "FPS drop", it's weird...as my FPS doesn't go down too much. It's more about the stuttering, because I can have a 10-20 FPS drops sometimes and it's fine...but with the SA page open, the stuttering is unbelievable and sometimes it feels like there is no massive FPS drops but the frenetic stuttering is there while the SA page is open.

I hope this descriptions can help too and if you want me to, I can record a new track showing when this happen and then post here.

Thank you guys for listening to us and checking this out! You guys rock!

Regards,

Alex.

This can be replicated in the "instant action" BVR 8v8 mission. SA page 160nm range on the left, Radar page 160nm range on the right, D/L ON. I'm looking at 40+ FPS drop in this configuration along with stuttering.

I'll check and see what I see.

I saw some small drops, maybe 5 FPS, but nothing solid, and didnt seem to change with visibility of any page. Can you save a track where you see the big drops and maybe I can play it back and see what I see, maybe share a shot of your graphic options as well, and I will match that up.
