[REPORTED] pre-0500 brainless AI

At any time before a mission time of 0500 (at least on the normandy map), two enemy aircraft will pass within a few hundred feet of each other and not engage. However, setting the mission time to anything after 0500, and suddenly the AI can see other aircraft and will turn to engage.

This is maybe Ok during winter, but results in total nonsense in Summer.

The two images below show the exact same mission on the Normandy map with the date set to June 15 (1944). In the top image, the time is just after 0500. The FW190 A8 will nose up and engage the bombers.

In the bottom image, the time is just prior to 0500. The FW190 will fly right on by the B-17s without reacting.

I have spent 4 hours painstakingly changing tens, maybe hundreds of variables in the mission editor in order to find that this was the cause of many AI not engaging each other on the storm of war server, an issue I have been trying to resolve for nearly 6 months.

To make even more of a mockery of this arbitrary red-line, you can see from the set of images that the actually visibility in either image is great, there's absolutely no reason why the AI would not see the bombers before 0500.

Setting this hard-limit on the AI behavior is massively detrimental to game-play and it forces mission designers to use incorrect mission date/ time settings to utilize the beautiful low-light conditions of DCS, or to b stuck with the flat high-sun conditions after 0550 (for most of summer).

Why not just use 60, or 30 minutes before sunrise and after sunset as the limit? This would mean that the time when the AI goes "blind" moves throughout the year but follows the low lighting conditions?

Amen, this and the uber gunners on the bombers, spoils the one amazing thing we have here compared to elsewhere, big bombers.

Hey, 0500 hours is too goddamn early to be fighting. Wake them up at a reasonable hour, and pour coffee down their throats, and they might be more willing. By, I don't know, noon or so I'm ready and willing. But, 0500 hours? Jezus, I need my shuteye.

I'm on it guys, this seems very odd indeed. Perhaps when the lighting was redone, something went odd, I know sunrise/sunset times were adjusted in some cases, but it shouldn't be based on time of day anyways.

And the uber bombers, will you put that on the radar please, its just so bad fighting the assets.

Reading this post I think the AAA have the same problem :

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=275861

I don't think they are brainless. I think for AI, it is still night.

And more, I think when testing mission on dedicated server, the AI behavior is set in relation to the start time and don't evolve during the mission. So if it's dark for them at start, it seem it still dark for them during all the mission.

Yes, this seems to be the issue. Lots of comments coming in from SoW players about this.

This has been broken for a long time and it affects all AI. You can put two hostile infantry platoons face to face and regardless of lighting, they won't engage if they think it's still night.

The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

Can you confirm you are still seeing this, and if so, include tracks & missions? I just tested internally, and I am not seeing it.

Aircraft are supposed to react based on light levels and not time of day.

Wow, this is great news if fixed.

There was nothing in any patch notes about it. I will try to run a test over next couple of days

Nineline - Bug is still present for us.

I am of the opinion that this bug is only present when running a dedicated server.

1. The Aerial AI will only engage each other at distances which are far too close, given how visible they are at this time of day

2. The AI Flak units will not engage enemy bombers which fly directly over head. Perhaps they are also set to engage only enemies which are very close?

I have linked a zip file containing the mission we used to test AND the resulting TRK file.
