I only fly MP with friends in TS. S has a built in mic (no boom) and it works fine. But no mute button which I wish it had.

Default Hey Guys

I'm thinking about getting the Rifts S, that would be my first VR experience. Right now i'm using TrackIr on a 65" TV.

But i'm not sure my 1070 gpu will be enough, I only fly Viggen at caucasus right now.

I just upgraded the rest of my computer to I9 9900K and DDR4 3200 32gb.

But will it still be a cooler exeriece then sitting by a flat TV, and would it be possible to read all the instruments and radar?

/Oscar

It depends on what you expect.

The immersion will be fantastic compared to what you have now.

But, be aware that:
* you need to tune down your graphics settings. Shadows you might even have to switch off with a 1070. That would be an absolute no go for ME.
* the image will never be even close to the quality you have now. This is because of your "weak" GPU but also due to the low resolution of the Rift S (compared to a monitor and prolly also to your TV)
* spotting ground and air targets will be much more difficult. This also is true for airfields in the distance.
* the field of view is *very* limited compared to what you have now

Readability of instruments and display will be OK (I don't own the Viggen) but also not as good as you might be used to.

Anyway, most people who once tried VR in DCS don't and won't go back. It is such an incredible experience

I'd say go for it . I have had a very good experience with a CV1 and a 1070 ( including shadows) , and will be ordering the Rift S very soon .

I seem to get very similar performance between the two.
Granted the Rift S is running at 80 Hz rather than 90Hz of the CV1.

I can't say definitely what the difference in performance will be , if any , as yet . As Don pointed out , many have found no significant change , although most such reports , it should be recognised , are using higher-end cards that may have additional headroom .
Having said that , i have been very pleasantly surprised by the performance of my 1070 to date , which has actually allowed me to maintain a very smooth , stutter-free 45 fps very low over the Caucasus with the graphics settings most important to me . (Water high , civil traffic , cockpit and terrain shadows , MSAA , 1024 displays in the Hornet , maxed grass/ clutter , trees drawn far enough out not to be popping up , etc)
In any event , next month i will be putting my money where my mouth is , and betting that my 1070 will give me a satisfactory experience with the Rift S .

Firmware updates just released seemed to improve performance quite a bit within DCS. A lot more testing to do still but great joy with the Rift S in week 3.
