DCS Update Patch Notes Discussion Thread

ED can do that for their own stuff, but they can't make this decision for the 3rd parties, so they have to provide their own public changelog.

Why?

Sure, I understand how a software development works, and that public changelogs are not a simple list of commits to the repository, but in the end ED is responsible for the whole gig, so they should enforce at least some quality and proper workflow from their 3rd parties.

This is also a bit difficult for 3rd party devs as they send their changes to ED on a regular basis, but they don't necessarily know when ED is releasing a new update.

Yeah, seen that happen several times. A great example of efficient communication between all parties involved, isn't it.

Hardware: VPForce Rhino, FSSB R3 Ultra, Virpil T-50CM, Hotas Warthog, Winwing F15EX, Slaw Rudder, GVL224 Trio Throttle, Thrustmaster MFDs, Saitek Trim wheel, Trackir 5, Quest Pro

Why?

Well, as a dev I wouldn't want someone else decide what of my internal stuff is getting shown to the public. Sure, ED could force them to provide public changelogs, but it's not EDs responsibility to manage customer relations for other companies. The internal workflow is a different one as explained above and has nothing to do with the public changelog which is only there for the customers. Creating a public changelog requires some work which some devs prefer to spend into actual work.

Well, as a developer (and I used to be one too) you know that a professional developer does changelogs as well as writing commented and well structured code - and both are actual work. Yes, they can be an annoying distraction - a bit like timesheets - but they serve a very good purpose for a very important bunch of people. I don't think we're asking too much here by asking for public changelogs.

Ah well, you see this is why we (and others in other forums such as Reddit) are discussing this. They often forget, which is quite annoying. I'm British by the way, so you should take "quite annoying" as an understatement. ;)

What is also frustrating is when we know that 3rd party devs have patched issues on their modules, but there is often a long wait - like we are seeing now - till ED releases the next patch with their content.

Now, I know that there are complications in releasing patches, but I would have thought we could have seen some 3rd party fixes in the last few weeks.

On a similar subject, I personally find it frustrating that we are not told a bit more about what is fixed and what is likely to be fixed going forward. For example, the recent 'announcement' about 2.5.1 only mentions memory issues and an offline mode! Over the last few months since 2.5 beta release, many issues have come to light - some fairly major and some not so much - and it would be really useful to hear which of them are being looked at.

Just an opinion as I'm sure ED know the optimum modus operandi for running their business a lot better than I do!

It is not physically possible to test 3rd party patches and a separate ED patch, the work involved is huge behind the scenes, testing fixes, verifying, merging, testing the merged patch, etc.

3rd parties have to be patched at the same time ED does, there is no other way.

You may see some lighting changes in this patch but it is not complete, there are more tweaks to come.

This is very bad news for me. I play with deferred shading off because otherwise I can't spot aircrafts in the sky. Basically, it makes flying in multiplayer a real nightmare. Bignewy, do you know if there will be a workaround? I'm very concerned by this.

Everybody has to deal with this problem, so this is not really a multiplayer concern.
