TV selection for my "PIT"

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I wanted to get everyone’s opinion regarding using a TV as a monitor. I am currently running a 1080p 27” monitor but wanted to get something a bit bigger for my cockpit. I’m thinking about 36”-42” as that is all my space will allow. Currently running a GTX 970 I5 and am actually happy with the performance and graphics at 1080. Long term, I am looking at VR but am not ready to pull the trigger on the upgrades. Would a non 4k TV be ok for this specific application or do I go 4K? Appreciate the help on what to choose or even specific models.

You can look for a 4k Qled TV like Q9FN by Samsung, it has 4k 60 hz or 1440p 120 hz. And freesync, game mode and additional motion improvements. Its possibly the best gaming TV on the market right now due to very low input lag for a TV and even better than some gaming monitors.

Or you can wait a 2-2.5 months for a new lineup. Samsung is going to offer improved Qleds. But thats nothing exciting. Big thing is going to be a 4k Oled from LG, offering HDMI 2.1, improved HDR and 4k 120hz with VRR. Thats going to blow all the competition out of the water. I believe it will be C9 model.

Of course there is a big talk about Oleds as they provide probably the best quality picture out there but at the cost of possiblity of burning in picture in case of prolonged use. So any bright and static images like UI, crosshairs or logos can burn in and stay there permanently. Of course cautious use is advised and with that nothing should happen, but you cant be 100 % certain. Unfortunately right now best picture comes with a risk.

Is 970 going to have enough horsepower a 4K monitor? I wouldn't think so.

You can always reduce resolution to 1440p or 1080p with 4k TV.

I'd strongly advise against this... unfortunately (I learned the hard way) lower res' on a 4k tv look terrible. I'd, given your current hardware, try to find a good 1080p TV with low input lag.

I've tried it on 4k monitor. It worked fine for 1080p, but not quite for 1440p. I intend to buy 4k TV to play in 4k, but I know there is an option to play with res.

^^^ This.

Using any TV/monitor at something other than it's native resolution will provide less than optimal results.

I can second that. I have once experienced 1080p on my 1440p monitor by mistake with one game, and all I could think about was how BAD the game looks until I've noticed that I'm not playing in native resolution.

Do, or do not, there is no try.
