The ability to change your AI wingman's aircraft separate from yours

Yes! It would be also nice to assign different aircraft/role to a single AI flight (group). One group of UH-60, OH-58 and AH-64, or for example a bomber / tanker / AEW escorted by fighters. It is possible to create mixed ground units and should be doable for airborne ones too.

Have you tried the "Follow" dialogue at all?

You may need to establish a waypoint that sets the aircraft following you free just before you enter the AO or else they may not do anything but follow you around while you try to fight.

There's also "Escort" as an option to get different types to end up in generally the same place at the same time.

Yes I know options follow and escort in ME and I am using these, but you can't give orders to these or control them unless with some scripting or complex triggers.. plus the AI also acts as multiple groups and not as one.
