Possible Solution to Stutter

Recommended Posts

Ok all. First the disclaimer. Not everyone will be able to do this for various reasons but if possible bring the refresh rate on your monitors down to 30, and then go into settings and click V sync. It does not removed the problem entirely but it makes the stutter much, much less and now things are at least playable. If your settings are realistic with regard to your own hardware you should be able to get a relatively steady 30FPS. For those of you who are like me and used to get a steady result of between 60-80, its not a return to that kind of fluidity an response rate. But it makes things relatively playable.

Late edit: results are not universally great. I tried my F18 over Persian Gulf and although the pauses were not as frequent or prolonged as had been, they were nevertheless still there and conspicuous enough to be bloody annoying again.

try this

1. set settings to

attachment.php?attachmentid=190731&d=1532577939

2. exit game..

3. default nvidia control panel..

4. delete contents of fxo and metashader2 folders under

C:\Users\Username\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta

5. set refresh rate to 60hz

6. start DCS.. fly!!

if on 4k screen should be a solid 60fps

if on 2560x1440, you can enable MSAAx2 and results will be approximately the same..

if on 1920x1080, and you have any issues, something else is wrong.

Edit.. Be sure that Fullscreen is not enabled in game...

PageFile large enough ? 32GB was a good idea on a drive that is NOT the DCS drive and if possible not your OS drive as well.

A 8700k-1080ti-32GB system must not stutter, there is something wrong in the bits and bytes.

Will try, report back thx. I got my OS on a 250 gb ssd and dcs on a 1 tb ssd. The game runs fluid but every two minutes I get some kind of burst, a short stutter like the game is loading something. Was the same on with my last system. I can even hear the Motherboard workingvwhen the short stutter / freeze kicks in.

I get stutters too. Haven’t found a solution. No adjustment of graphic settings seems to have an effect.

Well, this is a very interesting notion with the 30 Hertz / 30 FPS,

thank you Sinky for pointing it out.

I have spent the best part of last week fiddling with that,

and thought, as there is a parameter to be included in the autoexec.cfg:

options.graphics.maxfps = 30

there might be also one:

options.graphics.minfps = 30

This in order to achieve a stable 30 FPS, which guarantees a quite smooth and fluid ride. I spent many hours testing that in all 4 terrains, and it seemed to work, constant 30 FPS everywhere. But all of a sudden for some reason it stopped working.

After a couple of days of further testing, I have come up with the settings depicted in the included screenshot. These settings guarantee 90% of the time (disclaimer, at least with my rig), stable and therefore smooth and fluid 30 FPS in both cockpit and external views, fly-by being a bit stuttery.

Unfortunately, this works only 90% of the time with Caucasus and the Persian Gulf. In Nevada, end even worse in Normandy, the FPS jump from 25 - 30 to 50 - 60 all the time, in both cockpit and external views, causing the dreaded stutters.

Any further ideas?

I forgot:

Setting in the autoexec.cfg:

options.graphics.maxfps = 30

Gives 24-25 FPS and not 30. I have tried higher and lower settings, but

with this parameter it seems not possible to achieve stable 30 FPS.

My goal and anyone’s goal really, should be a constant 60fps. 30fps is way too slow.

My rig is not capable of that, but if I would get

CONSTANT 30 FPS in ALL maps I'd be more than happy.

For some reason, Nevada and Normandy keep on jumping 25-50, never

keeping the 30 FPS which are in my opinion fluid.

That’s true. It’s better to have a constant that’s a multiple of your refresh rate.

I have had some good success with DCS using Nvidia Adaptive Vsync or “Fast” Vsync settings. Having Vsync set On in DCS reduces your frame rate. Those two settings in Nvidia Control Panel give a higher smoother frame rate without tearing.

Well, I had no luck with any of the Nvidia V-sync settings.

The best I have come up, after literally days of testing, (I am retired and single),

is Nvidia default and the settings you see in the included screenshot.

With this settings I get 85% of the time solid 30 FPS, though unfortunately only

in Caucasus and Persian Gulf.

In Nevada and much worse in Normandy, with the exact same settings,

the frame rate jumps from 25 to 60 all the time, creating so much stutters, as

to make this last two maps in my opinion unusable.

I've upgraded my rig from a 7700k to a 8700k@5.0ghz + 32gb ram + NVME 970 evo 500gb + gtx 1080ti + new PSU 750w gold+ seasonic focus pro and I always get some micro-stuttering when turning my head wirh trackir .

Playing at 60fps costant, I got some micro-stuttering which ruins the immersion.

Tried process lasso, changed affinity, cfhange powerplan, etc etc but the micro-stuttering are stil there.....

There you are...

Why is it so difficult to block the sim @30 or 60 FPS?

another option you might be able to try is setting a lower refresh rate on your monitor in Nvidia CP.. it may be dependent on you monitor, but it is worth checking... if you set your refresh rate to 50Hz and then set in game vsync, you will be locked at 50 fps.. you could set it to whatever available refresh rates you have... i tried it... it works.. also has a significant reduction on both CPU and GPU load... you will likely have to restart your pc after applying the setting for everything to get settled in... but it works quite well..

Hello DflippinK,

THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED FOR YOUR EXCELLENT SUGGESTION!!!!!

In my ignorance, I thought it was only possible to have the monitor running

at full 60 HZ or half (30 HZ) refresh rate, and that another refresh rate

(e.g. 50 HZ) was not possible.

Well, after setting the refresh rate of my monitor to 50 HZ, I had to fiddle the settings a bit down in order to allow my rig to keep up with 50 FPS, but now, after the best part of the afternoon spent testing, it seems that ALL TERRAINS and ALL PLANES hold a CONSTANT AND STABLE 50 FPS, ELIMINATING almost completely the dreaded stutters!

Thanks again!:)

In a perfect world, the best place would be neither of these 2 you mentioned but another drive.

Best bet is to have one on EACH of them as the OS tends to choose the best one for the time being.

I had them on C, D E, F then on all of them, some HDD some SSD, now it's a dedicated SSD for swap...and it all worked w/o ever giving me problems.

The only problem you will have is if you have none or a too small one.

I almost always have 20-21GB swap, so 16GB would not be enough, I have it preset as a fixed size of 32GB.
