Better Labels

The idea is not new. But Opacity in Labels.lua is broken and many don't realize there is workaround.

This Labels file is adjusted to be subtle enhancement to visibility.

I know some people frown upon Labels but DCS is for your own enjoyment and how you enjoy it should be up to each individual. Whether it be for training or you just don't think default visibility is realistic. You can gradually reduce the dot size as you get better at spotting.

Download: Better Labels

Install: Extract to DCS Main install path or use mod manager. Must choose "Dot Only" labels in Gameplay section of in-game options.

I have included comments in the file for further adjustment per your preference. Search for Taz1004.

Dot size will depend on your screen resolution and can be adjusted with font size in line 60

Recommend font size of 3 or 4 for VR. 8 for 4K monitor.

That's because I wanted them to be "subtle" ;)

And I personally think visibility still is not realistic. The first screenshot, if you enlarge it, you should be able to see the long line of trucks in the back without labels at that distance in wide open field. I can see the small tree next to them. But not the trucks.

Ahh, ok thx, see it from now.

For this mod labels must be "ON" in DCS settings?

BETTER="GOODER!" lol

I can tell just by looking at the Lua that this is going to be nice!

Very subtle and clean: looking forward to testing out Better Labels V1 - Tonight.

I have been using StealthyNeo DOT-Only and goodman.od.ua Enhanced Visibility recently.

You also doubled the number of transitions to 8, so the dots will more slowly change size as distance increases.

I will use OvGME and install into \Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\

Cheers!

Definitely trying this one. I usually don't use labels but there's times a guy just wants to blow stuff up.

This are fantastic, thank you! before this, with the "dot only" setting, in VR with the G2 resolution, I was flying with what looked like enormous pixelated space invaders 😉

Awesome works as usual~!  Thx Taz, with a little tweak, it worked nice for me.

Vehicles at distance now shown as a tiny grey pixel, tiny enough that it can be spotted by looking around carefully so I don't have a strong cheating feel. \o/

It really just 1 or 2 pixel  with 3x3 blur setting (black center dot, with grey blur/shadow).

@Taz1004, is this now obsolete with 2.7?

2.7 has some odd label action. We have been using the custom label lua for about a year and all good. Since 2.7 it is an odd mix. Some people see the custom lua, others see full labels, etc. Even though the mission file is set to enforce "Symbol Only" (dot only is no longer an option)

Is the labels.lua file now redundant in 2.7? I have always used 'Better Labels' but since the update, it no longer appears to work.

I do not use this mod because I find default neutral dot label to be adequate in 2.7.  It fades away in the distance and size seems to change as they get closer too.

One thing I did edit is that dot is 2 pixels above the plane or ground unit.  This can be changed in line 107

Quote

res[last_x]     = {"·","CenterCenter",0,opacity,0,2}

Change 2 at end of the line to 0

Hi Taz,
In 2.8 it's not working well,
Can you please revise it but make the pixel invisible/transparent at 5 miles or so - for dogfights? (configurable)
and as GLOW here above me asked, is there a way to make those dots non-visible through cockpit walls, and sky as well?
Cheers!
