Help on FC3 F15C Mission 2

Hi,

:helpsmilie:

looking for advice on how to fly the campaign so I can learn how to fly these things properly...

Running the mission from the campaign where I escort F16c SEAD. 2 x Mig29 on red side.

I keep altitude and take down the Mig29s once they start approaching the F16s, but then the F16s get shot down by ground, and I'm hauled to court martial.

What am I doing wrong in this? Should I be running lower? If I'm below 15k, I get hit by the SAMS, if I'm above, the F16s are taken out by SAMS, or enemy air cover if I just wait and see what happens.

Run the mission several times, and only get either of the two results.

What should I be doing?

Track file included.

Thanks in advance for the collective wisdom...

Once the F16s report "on station" then you should direct them to attack. There should be some text about this in the mission briefing. They are waiting on your orders before commencing the SEAD. Once you tell them to attack they will clean house though and you can just focus on the MIGs.

Thanks for the response, but that's what I have done.

They manage to take out a couple of the SA6(?) but both die by flying directly into enemy fire... and then I lose.

I did win the first time through on the campaign by sheer luck. I have no idea how I lived, or got back alive to base. But it did show me what I was missing in situational awareness and systems management in the cockpit (radar management, weapons status, countermeasures) so I wanted to replay the mission to be able to pass it. After the first play through, the F16s hold until released, then just find the biggest group of SAMs they can find and circuit above them until they get shot..

I don't know if playing it outside of the campaign changes anything, as the SU-27s loitering at the back don't engage, as they did when playing the campaign.

Your most probably not doing anything wrong persay, as a current bug in the DCS engine is affecting all SEAD missiles and causing them to miss more often than should be the case, the ARM-88 is most affected in this mission, where as the aim-154c seems ok (but is a lot slower to get to target).

The net result of this BUG is:

  • When SEAD / DEAD flight engage with the AGM-88 they will nearly always miss, leaving the SAM active, they will either try to re shoot it with the AGM-154c or may have targeted another SAM and launched the AGM-154c at that, this missile will hit and kill what ever Sam it is aimed at, but it takes an aweful long time to get to target, in the mean time after launch, the SEAD aircraft now having off loaded all their missiles, still detect active SAMS and go in for the gun run (Suicidal kamikaze runs) as this is all that have left to fight with.
  • Watch your track file for the SEAD flights AGM-88 missiles and you will see they hit the SA-13, but don't kill them, that is because it falls just short, goes wide or to long and only does splash damage, however the AGM-154c hits and kills.

SEAD bug is being worked on and corrected in dcs v1.56 Openbeta due for release shortly, so not much you or anyone else can do until then.

Just remember your mission, SEAD is nearly always sent in first to cripple their defenses, then followed by CAP (Which is you to get air superiority over the battle area, then CAS, etc for final assault.

However in this mission, your job is:

  • To protect the SEAD flight, so that might be to not only take on the MIG-29's when they threaten the SEAD package, but also to help by deliberately getting fired upon by some SAM systems and then turning away out of their range to distract their fire from the F-16s SEAD and their missiles (SAM's are capable of shooting the incoming missiles if that is all they have to worry about).
  • So to recap, just don't send the SEAD first up when they call, as you aren't even near the fight when that happens. Probably call them, once you start getting fired up by the enemy SAMS, also don't dogfight over the main battle area, as you will have both SAMS and MIGS to contend with simultaniously. Lastly another stratagy could be to not send in the SEAD flight until you have taunted the SAM systems, and drawn the MIGS away from the battle area into an air space away from SAM range and kill them, then mop up with a simultanious attack of your flight and SEAD flight together.

After the first play through, the F16s hold until released, then just find the biggest group of SAMs they can find and circuit above them until they get shot..

That is kind of the idea of SEAD, except the get shot down part, but that is a symptom of a bug when missiles don't hit their target, they only have 8 and with less than a 50/50 chance of hitting at the moment (There are about 8 SAM Systems), also the F-16 will also have to do gun run on the final EWR installation as it will not have any missiles left to take it out at range, this is most likely when it will get killed.

I don't know if playing it outside of the campaign changes anything, as the SU-27s loitering at the back don't engage, as they did when playing the campaign.

Will play the exact same either way, Su-27's at back are for their base defense, will only engage if you threaten it by getting to close, fly over there and see what happens.

Good Luck, and timing is everything

  • 3 weeks later...

Glad to help, no fun flying broken missions.

Eventually most if not all of these fixed campaigns and missions will be available in the stock modules of DCSW, some are already there now, some on the way.

I have noticed ED are now starting to put additional language options for missions now, so you can have english, russian, chinese, french, etc. subtitles, voice overs and briefing pictures in the same mission set. (Have had a look at how this works, and I think for the moment it is too time consuming for me to play with, but I will probably update some campaigns or missions that originally had russian voice overs and were replaced with my english versions, I could now have both available. But that is for another day.

Regards, Ian.

Just a heads up and I thought of you- tankers in the f15 campaign fly at refueling speeds for the a10a 195-200. It should be between 300 350 or you get AOA, under thrust problems.

If you could, I'd really appreciate that fixed. If you tell me how, I'll do myself.

Be well.

Call me overly polite, but started playing mig29 campaign and dl/d the fixes again mad dog thank you.

reporting back as helpful community, nav points are goofy in mission 1, will not trigger completion if flown out of order. Once you hit steer five, if you didn't hit 1-4, mission failed, even if you land, refuel and backtrack.

I will post a new thread to your attention if I find any gamebreakers, and I will pm you small things after I complete it.
