Does DCS World benefit from more than 16GB Ram?

Recommended Posts

None, bare system, even without TS, TiR5 and SRS those all OFF too, so add these 3 on top.

NV Exp OFF

AV OFF

CloudServices OFF

Corsair Link OFF

CoreTemp OFF

Asus Suite OFF

Asus EZ OFF

but tbh, with or without, those few tools are only half a gig of memory meanwhile. I only deactivate them so they dont work/sync/scan/index while I game. Memory wise it's a minor issue.

I have been playing DCS several times per day since Normandy was released and have yet to see it use over 8Gb. I have been monitoring it because I am testing different configs to get best Performance/Graphic balance. That is in the Spit so if others are seeing 16Gb maybe it depends on the aircraft and the map?

16GB was Overkill when I built this system, now it's almost baseline minimum, lol.

Next System will be 64 or 128GB

Nice. I am on 32GB RAM right now and thought I was doing well. Guess 64GB will be my baseline for the next built as well.

I am still on 16 GB and seems to be fine so far. Honestly when I built this system in Dec 2013 I figured I would be needing to add more ram to it by now.

I will likely be doing a complete new build sometime in 2018 and will likely go with 64GB at that time. Just don't see the value in spending the money to go to 32GB on this system for no longer than about a year...

The amount of guys here that think they need 32 64 or even 128 is too damn high

STOP THROWING YOUR MONEY AWAY FOR NOTHING

8 is good 16 is good to be ready for the future/editing you dont need more than that nobody actually use more than 16

Be smart and just monitor how much ram dcs use on your current computer it wont use more than that even if you have 1 terabyte of ram

8GB is good ?????? seriously ???

Go try playing on a populated server and then report back if you still think 8GB is enough.

You actually outclassed your opinion to null value with that statement.

In contrast to most others saying NO to 16GB+ I have tested almost any config between 6GB and 32GB possible on several i7 machines.

With 8GB you will have severe trouble joining online servers..and yes..it works with 16GB, I have used that config for 2 years but I can clearly see that the system can use up to 8-10GB more RAM IF there is RAM to spare. I am NOT saying 32GB is mandatory, just that "some" of it is used for DCS as well. With 16GB total your system just cant use 16GB when gaming, THAT SIMPLE.

If those screenshots and YT videos I made dont convince than those guys better dont ask for advise at all as they never wanted to listen 1st place.

BTW shab249: If you had spent 1 minute looking at the scrteenshots you would actually see the System uses 16GB while in DCS, I have been up to 22GB on some dense servers. I have a 90min YT video that never drops below 16gigs in use. So dont say" Monitor it and you see it wont use more RAM"...that is PLAIN NOT TRUE !

I have recently built a server with 16GB, yes, cause I now it will never need more. I am not the "buy it all in gold" guy.

And yes, I use 32GB, I could use 128GB easily as I do VMware every day, it's just too expensive for my usage but I couod make use of it, along with 16 cores etc..

Just because you dont see why doesnt mean others have to stay in your blind spot !

I'll be putting together a new rig in a few weeks after all the parts arrive. I'll try to do some benchmarking with 8GB and 16 GB and report back on the results.

Its not really abpout benchmarking, you wont actually gain fps but avoid loading time and stutter, have a clean exit from the game instead of blocking and CTRL-ALT-DEL out of the game etc.. .

Unless you put in 32GB as well you wont see any difference as 16GB is sufficient to run it, that was never to be discussed. What matters is: Can the System ( OS+APP ) make use of 16GB in use or more ? As a 16GB total System would never use that much as total RAM used unless it is about to crash you have to put in 24 or 32GB and play the exact same server or heavy SP mission again and see if it loads more into RAM. I say it does. When I had 16GB total I nver used more than 12.x GB in total, OS+DCS. With 32GB I often start with 16GB right after joining the server without even being in a cockpit. Go figure !

Test 32GB as well or the test is taken ad absurdum.

It was asked if 32 makes sense ! LoL

16Gb is the "unannounced" new minimum to run error free and not only me are saying this.

I also didnt say 16GB makes problems ( apart from exiting the game sometimes ).

This is like someone saying " I dont like Tomatoes!"..and has never tried even one Tomato

...and you were the one with the 8GB statement, not me !!!

Yep..... hot debate....

1080 or 1080Ti ?..... easy ! Watch the fps ! ..... There with ram ammount ...it doesn't come to fps...

I think if you have the money for extra 16GB and you have a way to invest it in other thing that makes gaining fps go for it ....

By the way I found 140€ in my pocket and the extra 16GB will be delivered tomorrow.

I won't gain fps but could in some cases work on stutters (DCS/aerofly 2) and I'll give another try to xplane11 demo + flyinside .....it demands more than 24GB and last time it was unplayable in VR...

Yes, but it's gotta be 4166MHz but getting that to work with 8 Modules....hairy hairy !

No kiddin', more RAM never hurts :)

Consistently I am around 16GB now used, so I still say YES to more than 16GB, even if it's like 24GB. Not needed indeed, you also dont need 4k and for sure no 1k€ GPU...LoL....

Guys, we run multi-k€ gaming machines, who cares for 16GB !?

Sometimes tho I wish the developers would comment on this and give a bit of a guidance alkso in respect of the planned future.

Same goes for cores. i wonder if DCS world would make use of more than 4 cores and 8 threads. I am thinking on upgrading to X299 with quad channel memory and a 8 or 10 core cpu but only if games like DCS will benefit...

Yes exactly besides more ram is always better, not only for applications but also for windows to the point of reducing the usage of it's paging file used by the OS.

I have 32GB and the OS doesn't really bother with paging (a good thing because it's on an SSD), so less work for the OS and more CPU cycles for the applications e.g. DCS.

It's a no brainer for me.

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

DCS doesn't use four cores now, so more than four isn't going to buy you anything significant. However, if you run a number of background applications there can still be a benefit, though indirectly.

I dont have VR but I could imagine that a 6-10 core system would give a btter experience. Higher and more stable lowest fps, like that.

From what I have read, correct me if wrong, that VR extension likes multi-core and uses it.

Maybe not all VR sets do this but I think I read it a few times that 6-8 cores was their 1st choice. (?)

  • 1 year later...

I just did a short test with Afterburner

F 18 Hornet, Caucasus, clouds density 7, 1.00 PM, spring, almost everything high, no MSAA, vSync ON,

AF x 16 ....

After 2-3 minutes of flight, my RAM usage was 17.700 MB, which is 17,2 GB

I have only 16 GB + 32 GB swap on a different SSD

Micro stuttering .... like hell

I'm very confused, guys.

Could anyone explain, please ? I'm not a computer guru, but i think, BitMaster was right
