GPU usage in VR

Recommended Posts

I have just bought an Oculus Rift and I have medium settings and PD set to 1.3 which gives me about 45FPS but it does dip to 40.

I have checked with Afterburner and it shows that all cores on my i5 3570k (4.5GHz) are running 20-50% but my GTX 1080 is running at 98-100%. This seems very high to me and I would expect my GPU to be the bottleneck since I have an old 3rd gen CPU.

Is this amount of GPU usage normal?

System Specs: i7 8700k @ 5.0GHz (not delidded), ASRock Extreme4 Z370 MOBO, EVGA GTX 1080 SC 8GB, 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz DDR4 RAM, Samsung Evo 240GB SSD, Samsung Evo 500GB SSD, 1TB HDD, Noctura NH-D15S Heat Sink, Acer VE278H 27" 1080p Monitor, Ocukus Rift CV1.

Controllers: TrackIR 5, Thrustmaster HOTAS X, Saitek Throttle Quadrant (with DIY removable collective mod), Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals.

Just trying to keep my number of takeoffs and landings equal!

Yes I have about the same numbers.

45 fps ASW on with new Caucasus (in fact I force this with "RightCtrl" + "num3" to avoid the some peaks to 90 fps for stability as the change between 45 and 90 can stutter a bit) my Gpu is very highly used.

With DCS the stressed part is the Gpu.

What is curious (but nice!) is that sometimes you see your Gpu usage topping at 98-100% for some seconds but no fps drop, it stays stable at 45fps.

I concur this is the new norm :) Hiya Jacks I am sure your going to love the rift :)

Thanks guys, it seems that my GPU won't go above 1.3 and maintain 45FPS which is a shame (MSSA x2) but I guess I was concerned by the low CPU usage as I am upgrading to a 8700k (hope to OC to 5GHz) and I would hate to think that I won't see any improvement in VR in DCS for quite an expensive upgrade since it would now seem that my GPU is the bottleneck not my 5 year old CPU.

I was hoping that an 8700k would allow me to increase PD to 1.5 while maintaining the same settings.

2x MSAA is killing your system. Loose it and you will gain FPS, looks pants though I cannot run higher than 1.2 PD with 2xAA without I can set PD 1.7 and solid 45 FPS in all situations

I am using no MSAA and 1.5 PD at it is a pretty solid 45FPS with SAW.

Its such a shame we can't use it (MSAA) with DS and VR yet because it makes the game so pretty :)

I am a rookie on DCS world , playing in VR with i7 2700k ,Gtx 1080

for me water quality and Civ traffic are the most sensitive settings to kill the frames , with this two on lowest possible ,i can run all other stuff with good quality , view range medium and ppd 2.0 with stable 45 fps in VR, but i still on previous build 1.5.8

View range has a massive impact on performance (determines number of objects drawn on screen). As far as I can tell, water quality has zero impact on FPS (not a single FPS difference). Civ traffic can have an impact though. At low altitude, more stuff is drawn and it effectively adds a bunch of very crude AI units. Thus it hits both the CPU and GPU.

System specs: i5-10600k (4.9 GHz), RX 6950XT, 32GB DDR4 3200, NVMe SSD, Reverb G2, WinWing Super Libra/Taurus, CH Pro Pedals.
