MOD: Alternate KA-50 HUD scales

Recommended Posts

We've all seen

by now, and I always wondered why ED chose to go with the HUD elements seen in the sim, instead of what is shown in this video. Apparently, this video shows an older version of the HUD which was passed over in favor of what is currently simulated. However, I always liked this version better, it just feels more open to me.

So, I have just finished working on a modification to change the scales and bird-mark to match (mostly) what is shown in the video. The helicopter's roll attitude is still shown by the bird mark, but the mark itself is now oriented the same way as in the video (center portion up), and the pitch latter itself is marked to either side of center, instead of taking up the whole center of the HUD (which I always found irritating, as the bird mark ends up obscuring the numbers.

I find that this version is easier to read zoomed out and offers less visual distraction when focusing on what is outside the cockpit through the HUD.

I have also modified the bird mark so that the center flat portion precisely indicates the pitch attitude of the fuselage, while the outer 'wing' flats indicate the pitch attitude of the rotor disk. This should make it much easier to find the 'sweet spot' when setting up a hover.

I have posted two versions of this mod to the ED file system. The first version is just my mod, which may be incompatible with other KA-50 HUD modifications. It will be available at the following URL pending upload screening by ED: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/719682/

The second version I have uploaded is packaged together (with permission) with Devrim's English HUD/Shkval/PUI800 mod. These two mods both edit some of the same LUA files, so they are not compatible with one another when packaged individually. This version will be available at https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/719687/ once ED approves the upload.

This sounds interesting.

... but the upload approval is really taking ages ...?

yeah, i'm gonna poke 'em about it with a ticket right now.... The first was approved a few hours after i submitted it, but I had to change the description and that unapproved it.

Glad y'all like it. If I can ever figure out how to point the LUA files at new texture files, I intend to do some more work on it, but the stock texture doesn't have enough space for what I want to do.

Thank you! Keep up the amazing work on this mod. Thank you!

Update: Spread pitch scale to edges of center HUD real-estate. Modified 30/60 degree bank indicators to align correctly with new bird mark.

Thanks to PeterP for pointing me at the materials.lua file!

May I ask for an additional feature? :o)

In the video, sometimes it looks as if the pitch ladder for the negative angles (downward) is dashed. I like that idea - that way it is immediately clear what you are looking at.

Oh, and perhaps one other thing? Could the pitch numerics be vertically centered with the lines?

i.e.

20 ---- ---- 20

10 ---- ---- 10

instead of

20 20

10 10

From what I saw. Below the horizon line is dashed. And the above is continuous.

More or less so.

Hey this is great, thank you so much for your work !

So much easier to read your actual attitude while trying to maintain (or get to) a hover than to try to guesstimate it.

It's also very nice to be able to know at all time when your wheels are perfectly aligned with the ground, it makes those "hmm do ya think I'd land on that napkin on top of that mug on top of that tower?" type of landing much easier to plan and perform.

Bunck of kudos (can't spread rep), much appreciated

corrected pitch ladder not changing color, set dashed lines for negative pitch. Alternate texture file included with numbers in-line with pitch bars (end-user must swap out files, instructions in readme) Files will be online at link in OP pending moderator approval.
