Advice on a new build.

Recommended Posts

Since the 3000 series are pretty much out, I'll finally upgrade my 10yr old i7920. I'm thinking about going with this build in the link:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6W3Xsk

I'm not sure whether to get the 3900x or the 3800x. Do I really need 12 cores? I dont really do multicore intensive stuff and I'm sure 8cores will be sufficient once Vulcan is implemented, at least I think so. I will transfer over my 1tb 2.5 evo ssd, and my 5700 1tb platter from my old pc, as well as my EVGA Supernova 850 watt psu, which is relatively new. Additionally, I'll be diving into VR. I'm thinking about the rift s, which seems to have gotten decent reviews for its price.

Accidentally added a cpu fan, which is a mistake.

I'm assuming you're going to re-use your current power supply? Is it 10 years old as well? Other than that, the build looks pretty solid, congrats in advance :)

Edit: just read the supernova being relatively new...note to self...read the rest of the post after the link...lol!

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to pull the string on this. I think I'm just going to get the 3900x. Now if amd can just ship some more. I'd rather just source all my parts from newegg and urrently they are out if stock. Ive always dealt with them and they've been good, especially when it comes to rma'ing anything if need be. A little uncomfortable buying components for a cpu until I actually have the cpu.

By the time the 3950X will arrive you can also have a Threadripper !

If money is not your concern I would always opt for a WS platform vs. a consumer board, for many reasons. Just think of that RAM bandwidth and all those LANES :)

Not that a 3950 would be a bad decision.

At the rate at which the 3900x is rising in price due to lack of supply, I may have to rethink my build anyway. I sure hope that AMD sticks to their suggested retail price when they do eventually get more 3900x chips out to sellers.

It's not AMD, it's the retailers ! Lisa Su stated that explicitly last week.

Supply & demand play their game

I did it. After 8+ years with an x58 i7-920 4 core ( broadwell) artifact that has served me very well and still going strong, I took the plunge and pulled the string on parts for a new build:

I am now a member of team red.

R9 3900x - amazon got new ones in for $499

Aorus Elite X570

Gskill Trident neo 32gig 3600 CL 14

Aorus gen4 1tb nvme

Evga ftw rti2080super

Corsair h115 AOC

Nzxt h710i mid tower

Parts from old system:

Evo860pro 1tb ssd

WD black 7200 1tb drive

EVGA Supernova 850watt psu

Aorus AD27QHD monitor

The nvme was almost $200 less than the 970pro and it's faster in every bench I've seen and it has a sufficient Hs to manage the heat, plus the controller will only get better as it matures. My old monitor died so needed a new monitor anyways and the aorus 27 ips 144hz has both free sync amd G sync, so this was a no brainer. My current card Is a 970gtx so the new 2080super should be a pretty significant improvement and ser me up to dive into vr.

12 cores for me is a bit overkill but by the rate at which I upgrade to new cpu's I figured why not.

Parts are ordered and should all arrive by midweek of next.

No... forgot to mention, the psu and 860 are only a few months old.

Send benchmarks when you've got it set up.

I'm planning a similar backbone rebuild soon, and I'm still trying to decide between Ryzen 3rd Gen (though probably a 3700X for me) and an I9-9900K build.

Ironically, I believe I've got a six year old PSU in mine...

So far just received the CPU, Cooler, NVME, and the Vid card. Still waiting on delivery of the case, mobo, and monitor - and thermal paste (went with a ceramic, non-conductive, paste - the Noctua NHT-1 - I know the liquid metal is better but have never played with that runny stuff before - which are due for delivery early this week. I'll try to get it up and running by next weekend - crossing fingers that everything plays nice with one another and that the RAM hits it's XMP speed without any hiccups. I think I need to update the bios from the get-go since I believe AMD pushed out a new bios that somewhat addresses the 3900x hitting their boost clocks.

The new build is finished. I'm very pleased with the results - how can I not be upgrading from an i7 920 x58 system. I decided to just go with a new psu instead of using my relatively new evga 850w psu from my old system. The only piece of hardware I gutted from the old system is an Evo860ssd 2.5, which i mounted out of sight behind the motherboard. Build went pretty smoothly. I thought the mounting of the pump was a little to be desired as AMD uses clips on both sides of the socket and a few screw with no back plate and four screws; also, i love the h710i case - cable management is a dream(everything is nicely hidden behind the Mobo - , but one of my case fans wasn't spinning, and had to trace the fan cables to find that particular lead and move a plug around or two which got that fan spinning. I think the smart device is a nice concept, but still needs some major revision. I flashed the bios using the Qflash+ method without any hardware installed. I was a bit nervous to do this, but was pretty seamless and simple. All components were recognized and thankfully, my the xmp profile on my ram was recognized. I haven't had time to really throw a battery of benchmarks at it, but just running a quick free flight in DCS and monitoring my cpu, it looks like my processor is able to boost consistently to 4525 mhz and i saw it boost on at least 2 occasions to 4600 on the 1.0.0.3 bios. I am impressed by the m2 gigabyte 1tb nvme: the heat sink is put together pretty well; two sides of the thing wrapped in heat spreaders and wrapped in a solid copper case. This cpu does run hot. One of the clips slipped off mounting the pump and i just re clipped back down and tightened, but I may need to remove the pump, clean, and remount the pump. Also, this Nvme - at least according to Samsung magician - pumps out some impressive numbers, but it also pretty hot - just look at the temp of compared to the Evo860. Here are a few pics.

Shouldn’t it read 4525 and 4600MHz ?

I really hope that’s a typo
