AFN-2 broken

Setting the AFN-2 frequency as told by the manual in the ME to the ILS frequency does nothing else than letting the needles jump and thus not show the proper distance or offset/bearing to the beacon.

In this test: Bf-109K4 to player with AFN-2 frequency set to Batumi ILS (110.3). As you can see, it doesn't work properly.

So, it means that WWII radio equipment is on the way?

It is only way how AFN will work properly, with beacons with frequency range somewhere around 40MHz. (it has never worked properly in DCS)

There is nothing modern working with that frequency range...

btw. WWII radio equipments is truly welcome in DCS world

Sorry for not getting back faster, this was reported some time ago, to get it to work similar to how it does in the 190 at least. I think now that we have new maps coming for WWII we will see more activity on it. Again, sorry for not getting back here in a timely manner, it just slipped by me.

Hello,

I have made a custom mission to have a closer look at what the AFN-2 system does and does not. (stable version 2.5.5.33184). The beacon is modeled by a friendly vehicle emiting on 42.5 Mhz AM. I tried 1W and 10W without noticing any difference.

My observations:

1. The central light of the AFN-2 instrument lights up when flying right above the beacon (vehicle).

2. The distance (NAHE) needle works only when flying relatively close to the beacon (vehicle), not further than 10 km approximatively.

3. The direction needle never works on my side. It keeps swaying randomly (rarely) left or right.

I add the mission file if anyone is interested to give it a test. I am very new to the BF-109 so perhaps someone will come up with more accurate and precise infos.

Best regards.

Any news on this? I tested it further with all 3 german warbirds and got following results:

When I make a vehicle (portable TACAN station for example) broadcast on 40.4Mhz AM (Also tried with 110.3, Batumi ILS) for example, the instrument does absolutely nothing (with direct LOS), not even light up.

If I set it to Batumi ILS for example, both distance and direction needles work, but the light does not light up when being above the station.

Using it with a Beacon of a map makes the distance needle jump around and works in reverse (the closer you are the more distance it shows). The direction needle jumps from time to time in a direction, otherwise stays fixed in center. Light does not work.

So currently it's only for ILS. Any chances to make it work with vehicle / beacons too?

TACAN operates in the frequency band from 960-1215 MHz...

40,4 MHz does not seems to be usefull frequency for it.

Something is not correct here.

I tried to make it act like a beacon by doing "set frequency" to 40.4 Mhz (like you can do with all vehicles in DCS, also that frequency would be in range of FuG16, but I found out it can go to 156Mhz anyway).

The TACAN was just the nearest object I had on the mission that I was testing it with. Swiss_Lipo above seem to have tested it with some other vehicles, but didn't work either apparently.

While we are getting ready to celebrate the 3-year anniversary of this bug, I wanted to ask if you maybe had an update on this. The new WW2 map has been released for a while after all.

Kein Anderer als ein Jäger spürt,

Das macht uns glücklich, stolz und froh,
