What are your specs, and we are talking Normandy, I think you only have access to one branch that runs that...

I'm running stutter spec. 6700k, 32gb, ssd, 1080ti, vr.

I understand you run release candidates but that implies they eventually get released.

I've noticed comments by yourself since first Normandy release that it runs better which based on my experience none of the few released patches indicate.

It doesnt run as good as NTTR yet, but I dont have very many issues with it, and it gets better with every release... so? I stand by my comments, since before release its run pretty goof for me. I had stutter issues before I moved it to my SSD drive. So what else?

Shadows are not pre-baked/painted, but they are not dynamic as well, the positions is updated at a few points over a 24 hour period, this is a balance between performance and quality. Dynamic shadows was attempted early on internally I believe, but was too much of a hit based on object count, map size, etc. Maybe in the future as computers improve and ED's terrain engine matures we will see more on this...

Thanks for the clarification. That is a good answer and makes sense. If they update their pos a few times during the daylight time cycle then that is a great compromise. Just never noticed the shadows cast at 9am in the world terrain are different than the ones cast at 2pm in the same location. And to clarify this is how it is currently in NTTR and Normandy?

But again thanks for the answer and the info, appreciate it. Really looking forward to it regardless of course. Screenies are gorgeous.

I am not 100% sure about Normandy, I would assume so, but I have never checked it. Its harder to notice as terrain shadows are harder to see there. I love flying with a nice layer of fog over Normandy, so I tend to miss the terrain shadows more :)

I gotcha. Yeah that low fog layer in Normandy is really comfy. Thanks again.

There were a few last year, showing "before" and "after" shots of a one of the airbases and cities (with some new buildings thrown in between the old ones). I don't recall anything more recent though.

I agree

No, this was a few years ago when EDGE first hit our internal builds, and have long since vanished, I am sure they might consider revisiting as things mature, just not happening right now.(...)

Yep, you are right. I tried with a mission set around sunset time and it does the job (lighting). Enough for me.

Thanks for your reply.

I wonder how it is that we still have the terrain textures with satellite imagery that shows some buildings and such? Like doesn't the terrain engine allow to use a automatic terrain generation tools that identifies a building blocks in the satellite images and then place above them something randomly?

Same thing with the roads and everything, where mapper would just need to paint areas to be something and then the tool would just randomly place the buildings, roads, railways, rivers etc based basic logic?

That would radically improve and speed up the map generations for DCS as people could either make a fictional maps or then some to build a more realistic ones based historical maps or even todays maps (without famous sightseeing/landmarks).

Made these for fun last night...

Thank you, good to figure out the sunlight, shadows, and clouds management

Is it normal to have dark night around 7:45 PM in June in Nevada ?

Looks like the date is not taken into account but for textures only, right ?

The NTTR and Normandy look just amazing, can't wait for the new Caucasus map. However, aside of the eye-candies is there any information on the map topology itself? What I mean is:

1. Size of the map, is it going to remain the same or is there a plan to expand it?

2. Cities reproduction. To some extend being quite generic today - for example compare real Poti area with the one currently in-game.

3. Timeline. For example the Novorossiysk airport doesn't exist anymore. Marneuli AB is missing on the map.

.

They have announced extending map to the South but haven't shown a new image reflecting the size change.
