Caucasus Map for 2.5 Update - 23 July 2016

I have a little news for you on the updated Caucasus map for DCS World 2.5. A key part of DCS World 2.5 will be the unification of the Caucasus and Nevada maps (and all other future maps). In order to do this, we first need to update the Caucasus map to the T4 map standard (as the Nevada map is).

Initially, we planned just to update the file structure and field textures, but we later decided to greatly expand on that. Because the Caucasus often servers as the first impression for new DCS World users, we feel it important to have a more substantial update that matches map quality to vehicle module quality. While the attached summer season images are still very much Work-In-Progress (with a lot of fixes, tuning and some pretty big changes to still come), they do provide a glimpse of where we are going.

In the attached images, you may notice the following: updated / higher resolution textures for almost all terrain surfaces, airfields, and ground objects; new tree system for both forests and “urban areas”; much greater population of forested areas; several new ground objects with improved geometry detail; deferred lighting system; new water renderer; procedural grass; and improved shadows. We also hope to include a higher resolution terrain elevation mesh, but no promises on that. In previous images, we showed off how the updated map is looking from “squirrel cam” level, but today we thought we’d raise the camera up a bit.

Once the map update is near final with concrete poured, we can provide more details. However, prior to then, too much can still change to make any additional feature statements.

We share your desire to have “the great unification” happen as soon as possible, as it will make the lives of both developer and customer a lot easier. However, this map update is long overdue and will need to be completed before that can happen. We are still looking at this being completed by the end of 2016.

All in all, this is going to be a pretty extensive update to the map and we think will breath some new life into this region for both past and future missions. Best of all, we are providing this extensive map update for FREE.

Caucasus Map for 2.5 Update - 23 July 2016

A little update... today the Caucasus map for DCS World 2.5 had its terrain elevation resolution increased by an average of 400%. This has eliminated almost all sharp edges to the terrain; and it's added rolling hills, much more detailed ridges and mountain sides, and provided many new places to hide down low.

I'll try to post some images in the coming weeks.

Yes, this is still a FREE upgrade planned for later this year.

DCS World 2.5 Update

Perhaps our biggest focus is on the huge DCS World 2.5 Update that will unify DCS World 1.5 and 2.0. Not only will the DCS World 2.5 be one version to rule them all, it will also include a vastly improved Caucasus map. Features of the new map will include improved and higher resolution textures and elevation mesh, improved trees, higher density of ground objects, improved lighting and shadowing, terrain projected shadows, procedural grass, and other improvements. Best of all, this will be our free gift to you.

DCS World 2.5 is still on track to be available in 2016.

We have included a few comparison images that illustrate the vast improvements that DCS World 2.5 will bring.

DCS World 2.5 Update

attachment.php?attachmentid=151412&stc=1&d=1478865760

We have determined that the DCS World 2.5 update will not be available in 2016 as we had earlier hoped. This is mainly due to additional work needing to be done of the Caucasus map update, and we don’t feel it can be accomplished within the next two months at a high level of quality. Before we can complete this map update, we first need to finalize and release both the Nevada map update and the Normandy map. Those, along with the Spitfire, are now our highest priorities. Once the Nevada update and the Normandy map tasks are complete, our map team can return to the Caucuses map and move the 2.5 closer to an Open Beta release.

Also, please note that official information is only passed along through our Newsletter and press releases.

DCS World New Maps Update

Now that the DCS: Normandy 1944 Map has been released and we are in a tuning and bug fixing mode, some of our map team has shifted their focus to two other maps we have in development:

New Caucasus Map. Based on the existing map in DCS World 1.5, we are working on a huge update that will include:

  • Improved textures for all seasons
  • Improved and higher resolution ground elevation mesh
  • Improved ground object textures for buildings, roads, bridges, airfields, etc.
  • Adding terrain shadows based on time of day
  • New tree system for more and better-looking forests
  • Additional map area in the southern portion of the map
  • Added procedural grass

Most important though, this updated map will incorporate our new map format and technology that will allow it to be merged into a single DCS World version that includes all of the other maps. The completion of this map is a critical component of moving all DCS World to version 2 and saying goodbye to DCS World 1.5.

As this will update our existing Caucasus map, this update will be for FREE!

2.5 is coming this year. Don`t worry, it all takes time due to many reasons, but generally that it`s all quality simulator. We waited for some 5-6 years for 1.5 alone. We`ll get there.

For those who don`t read cyrrillic, Chizh confirms that 2.5 will be this year.

Keep in mind that Strait of Hormuz is in the works as well as some sea/land map from Heatblur (wanted to say LN duh).

One of the big improvements we are making to the FREE Caucasus map is to greatly improve the elevation mesh to eliminate any any unnatural, straight edges (an end to pyramid mountains). While still work to do, here are three images that show our efforts.

In the Mission Editor image, you can also note the much more extensive forestation of this quite large map.

Gran bel lavoro , bravi

Its simply the designation of the internal build the screenshot was taken with, the public merge is still planned for 2.5.

Innegabile, tutto molto bello.

@Phant
