Bugs in the F15 Bear Trap campaign / am I doing something wrong?

Trying to get back into FC/DCS for the first time in many years. As a warmup I thought I'd fly through the included campaign (in my case the F-15 Bear Trap campaign).

 

On mission #2 and #4 I run into problems..

In both these missions you are tasked with protecting SEAD flights (AI controlled F16s) while they attack ground targets (EWR for mission #2, sams for mission #4).

 

In both missions I kill all airborne enemies in the mission (cheated and checked with externals :joystick:). However, the AI F-16s never fire a single HARM :S. In fact as soon as they fly into SAM range, the SAMS fire and the AI F-16s drop their A2G ordnance :megalol:.

 

I've reflown the missions 3-4 times with the exact same results.

 

The way I completed mission #2 was to kill the EWR target with the guns on my F-15 :pilotfly:. However that approach...doesn't work that well on mission #4 (vs sams) - nor do I think it is the intended way it should play out...

 

Whats going on here? I can't find anything about this in the briefing. Should I manipulate the AI F-16s planning? I don't really know how the editor works. I tried looking at it but the flight plan for those f-16s seems locked (although all their wps are marked as standard turning/steerpoints - maybe something broke in an update and they should be marked as some kind of target/SEAD area?).

S = SPARSE(m,n) abbreviates SPARSE([],[],[],m,n,0). This generates the ultimate sparse matrix, an m-by-n all zero matrix. - Matlab help on 'sparse'

Yeah this campaign was broke way back. I had to manually edit many of the missions to get through them, I think mission 6 was the main one, and maybe 8. I think i racked up over 100 a2a kills redoing the missions over and over. Still great fun tho :-D

Haven't posted fixed files as yet, a couple to complete, checking DCSW v1.5x compatability.

@Wags: Will ALL FC3 campaigns get a trigger/AI recheck?

 

My experiences from the past month:

A10A: bugged in the first mission after the AGM-65's kept locking on an empty field next to the target. This isn't the only problem with this module though. There was a topic on this step child of the FC3 modules on the Steam forums back in january, although I can't seem to find it back.

Perhaps you can contact the community managers over there, they should definitely know more.

 

Su-25: The mission where you need to destroy the PzArtBtl convoy doesn't complete properly (ie. the entire batallion destroyed will only net you a 50 percent result, not enough to continue to the next mission)

 

F-15C: In Mission 6, SEAD F-16's are supposed to destroy an SA-10 before F-15E's attack the airfield. However, the F-16's will never destroy the SA-10. That doesn't matter though, since the F-15E's love to go ahead of the F-16's anyway.

I know... I know....

 

It's just tiring to see the state in which Campaign is currently; The chatting is just a nuisance, Your allies are complete imbiciles, triggers dont work, load-outs aren't right, bad grammar in the briefings and as a finishing touch: Even if you aced the mission you still need to modify game files to advance to the next stage. =/

 

And then you see the awesome looking campaigns that are planned/released and I just become afraid to pay 10 bucks for the same mess. It's like buying a ticket to see a movie you're hyped up about, only to find out the screen doesnt work and your money is down the drain.

Is this fix still working ?

 

I decided to try out some of the campaigns as I have never done so

 

So far, on mission 2, the F-16s die by SAMs after I have cleared the area of enemy CAP and I get a failed mission.

 

Nothing important, just letting ya know

There has been constant changes done to SEAD missiles and SAM AI in patches which unfortunately, doesn't always guarantee that a SEAD missile will always hit its target, it use to be a 100% hit rate, then went to a 0% hit rate, but now is approx a 50% hit rate, this is due to SAMS now being able to shoot incoming missiles, and the AI being sneaky and turning off their search radars at intervals so your SEAD missile has no signal to follow.

 

However, the current english version of Flaming Cliffs 3 (F-15c) module has the patches applied, and the more recent updated versions are available on the Eagle Dynamics website in the USER files section, it has also be brought to my attention that if you have the F-15c standalone module (ie NOT FC3) the patches aren't included with that version currently, so they will not work well, Eagle Dynamics have indicated they will be adding the patched version in a coming update.

 

A dead give away for the old set of faulty mission is, If the SEAD flights drops there weapons when engaged by aircraft or SAM's.

 

In the newer versions they are programmed to never drop their weapons when targeted.

 

Usually if you take out the CAP flight, the only way the F-16's will get killed is if they run out of missiles due to the 50% success rate of SEAD missiles, and they try to finish their mission by gun running the SAM's.

Sorry for necro'ing the thread, however, I've been trying to beat mission #2 of the f-15c bear trap campaign, as 2.5 is exciting and an excellent reason to go through single player campaigns again.

 

Job is to protect the f-16's, but they get shot down by sa-19 sams well before any enemy aircraft get close enough to be a threat. I even tried flying low and trying to get the sams attention but they seem to prioritize going for the f-16's. The f-16's are launching agm's but they don't seem to be hitting anything and maybe get one off before being nailed. Never struggled much with this particular mission in 1.5

 

Unsure if you guys have gotten around to these campaigns for 2.5 yet, but I'm excited to fly them over the converted map.

I've been trying to beat mission #2 of the f-15c bear trap campaign

 

Scroll up a few posts to MadDog's contribution and download his campaign updates. All of them. For all campaigns. That will get you started. Unfortunately, even Ian hasn't been able to keep on top of all the changes to the game in recent months/years. There is a thread which I contributed to regarding Mission 6 of this campaign.

 

In mission 6, not only are the F-16 SEAD packages highly inaccurate, but the F-15E strike packages would constantly run into the ground due to flying too low. I had to extensively edit this mission myself just to get the NPC pilots passing their own missions, let alone mine. The SAM sites weren't being taken down by the SEAD packages as they're not as accurate as they used to be, even when pilot skill is set to Excellent. And aside from the F-15Es crashing, if they did manage to make it to Mozdok airfield, they would just fly headlong into the SAM sites and get blown up.

Bear in mind, he did these awhile back, so they've developed some issues as well and he has said he wants to look at them again. Probably not until 2.5 is out and stable, though I guess.

 

With that in mind, you may have to load some of the missions (like mission 6) into the editor and make some changes to get it to complete. It is annoying, but on the bright side, it will force you to start learning some of the more advanced features of the editor. And that can only be a good thing!

In 2.5 still having the same issues. I have flown the mission five times and over and over again, the F16's are getting shot while missing all their targets.

 

Yep, you'll have to play around with the mission in the editor. I changed the loadout on two F-16 of the SEAD targeting Mozdok to use 6 x AGM-65 missiles. I ensured the other two used 2x AGM-88 to give them more range. I also had to make the two long range SAMs priority targets, so that the SEAD could then move in to take out the shorter range ones which kept tripping up my F-15E teams.

OK, I had an issue while just getting to the target waypoint, I saw 2 MIGs inbound so thought I would intercept them quick, took them both out but got clipped by one of their missiles, sustained enough damage to make further contact pointless, so limped back to home base, landed and ended mission.

Now I never got a mission failed, and as that's only the second mish I'm down 25%.

Did that fail or was it OK? Only down a bit as didn't complete all objectives.

This was while having the problem of cat jumping on lap!

Just check the result count (even during the mission with apostrophe key) - if over 50 - you passed.

I'm also having the same issues and confused with the instructions. During a TARCAP aren't you supposed to go through all the way points to complete and defend? Also why do the way points take you into enemy territory when it clearly states not to go into enemy territory under any circumstances, yet the F-16s go in there and get pummeled. So at waypoint 2 I doubled back and rejoined with the F-16's to escort and defend but the enemies are in enemy territory... I find the instructions are contradictive and really make no sense. You're supposed to defend the vipers but can't escort them in. also, you have NO protection form enemy air defense but flares and chaff.

 

Lastly the way-points on the map make no sense. WP2 is where WP4 is on the map and this really confuses things. The only way I'm orientating myself in the mission now is to look at the map and be sure to not go into enemy territory and yet all the threats are in enemy territory so the 16's get shot down, my wingman often gets shot down and i go to jail for failing (booooo). One more thing... 30K altitude? WTF? I stick out like a sore thumb up there while the vipers are at angels 14 lol.

 

I must be missing something but it's beyond me what it is. Falcon 4.0 made sense lol. the mission outlines the WP, altitude and task at that WP. How different is all this from the way F-15 pilots are briefed?

In short: don't fly The Bear Trap campaign in 2.5OB. Go back to 1.5 instead for compatibility. If you insist on staying with 2.5 wait for campaign fix.

 

The problem was already described in details so don't expect proper behavior from SEAD mission. Old map was never updated so do not look at the waypoint numbers. It's just there for the big picture. Briefing also contains errors (i.e. waypoint numbers). You should loiter around Tskhinvali for your CAP until mission success and RTB order. The waypoints are not in the enemy territory and neither the targets are. What protection against enemy air defences do you expect? You're not going to jail - just court martial (not simulated ;) There is nothing wrong with CAP at 30K and during engagement you fly as it fits you. You mention other 'perfect game' and yet you end up flying lower fidelity module of DCS :)

Perfect, Thanks Draconus. I mentioned the 30K because I'm vulnerable to SAMs and other aircraft not to mention I'm protecting a flight that's flying at 14k... It just doesn't make sense to me but I'm getting back into this so there's still a lot to learn. Falcon 4 was far from perfect but due to the source code being leaked the community has kept it alive and well. I hope we get the Viper in the near future. :thumbup:

For your pleasure,work in progress early access for said campaign, still testing each mission for faults, (SEAD is a real headache, AGM-154c no good at all and are being replaced with AGM-65D, yes they work better so long as plane can get in close and avoid missile fire).

So if you want try it out, here is the link.

I was only able to test 2 missions.

#01 went flawlessly, F-16s do their job (SEAD, DEAD), mission complete, only F-15Cs get shot down by SA-19s, before I get to the AO

#02 seems ok, but the briefing says about getting there at the right time (12:12) that will make A-50 more vulnerable when it's not really like that - it's like going near the wasps hive (at least 2 Su27s escort). Especially when you have to do it by yourself because I have yet to find a way to somehow get the wingman fly over there at the right time too. Have already tried 'trail', 'pincer high' and just 'route' but he mostly crashes way before or get there first high and get shot down. I will try timing 'hold your position' and then 'rejoin' next time.

Thanks Draconus.... I also tested mission 2 and it was easy as pie. Mission success with my wingman down and I didn't even land a shot. It's not the best because I didn't really learn anything but at least it beats failing no matter what I do. If I only knew coding enough to help out I'd try to tweak it.
