Crash to blackscreen only in DCS

Hi

I'm having the following issue that only seems to happen in DCS! The computer will lock, monitors will go to black screens (no input) and the GPU fans will hit 100%. The PC needs to have a hard reboot as CTRL+SHIFT+WIN+B to reset the graphics driver doesn't help.

This happens on any mission - standard or DLC campaign and can happen after 2 minutes or 3 hours.

  • Prime95 can run for 24 hours without error so I don't believe it's CPU/RAM related.
  • Furmark can run for 12 hours without failing so I don't believe it's GPU power or temp related.
  • Can run 3DMark DirectX11 benchmarks/stress tests without failing.
  • After the crash there are still entries being written to event viewer (not related to this, a test script created to write an entry every 10 seconds) and if GPU-Z is running that continues to write to a long. Therefore Windows is still running in the background so it definitely appears GPU related.

I've tried the last 3 sets of NVidia drivers with the same result.

I've reinstalled Windows and only installed drivers and DCS (no copying of saved game folder, not even plugged in my HOTAS for testing) but get the same result.

Attached is a log and below are system specs. At a bit of a loss here! :(

AMD Ryzen 3700X

Gigabyte X570 AORUS Pro

16GB TEAM GROUP EDITION DDR4 3200MHZ

Nvidia 2080 Super

Windows 10 version 1903

Any help would be most appreciated.

Chris

Is your GPU factory overclocked? How much is it overclocked?

Have a look here at the pagefile advice also it may help.

Hi

Standard factory clocks for 2080 Super - 1650 MHz base clock, 1815 MHz boost clock. No manual overclocking of anything here.

Will try pagefile tip and report back, hopefully with good news.

Agreed that it's a driver crash, but I've been desperately trying to get something OTHER than DCS to cause it and have so far failed.

Good Morning

Is there an update to this, or an estimate of when I can expect an update?

At the moment I've bought a new PC solely to play DCS on and that's the one thing I cannot get to work so it's now just gathering dust :(

I'm tempted to RMA the GPU but I'm 99% convinced that it's a DCS issue (would be very happy to be proved wrong!)

Hi

If you have not already I would contact support directly

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/support/

I am unable to reproduce the crash on my machine, so it is difficult to diagnose.

If you can think of anything to try I'm open to suggestions. I've been trying to troubleshoot this for weeks now and haven't had a single crash on anything other than DCS no matter how much I try.

In many ways I really REALLY want a crash elsewhere as then I can look into other areas.

Hi Chris, you are note alone,i have a same problem. It's really frustrating.I paid graphic $ 800 and now i can't play dcs????.Let me know if you find out.

Hi

I absolutely share your frustration.

Unfortunately I didn't really get anywhere with my support ticket. They suggested I under clock my graphics card. Considering its running at factory clock speeds I don't think this is an acceptable response.

At first they didn't accept any responsibility until I pointed them to the sticky thread about TDR errors made by one of their staff members. At that point they changed their mind and stated that they are aware of issues with some 2080 cards, however there was no mention as to what's actually being done on Eagle Dynamics front to fix this or why some cards seem work and others don't.

I've been playing other games since my last post on this PC and they are all working flawlessly, as are benchmark loops and stress tests that I've been running for days at a time without error. I ONLY get problems in DCS! I've really come to the end of my troubleshooting and can only say that DCS doesn't like this computer. Unfortunately there's not any other modern jet flight SIM to switch to so I'm very much grounded now.

Chris

I have the same issue now as well. I am running an MSI RTX 2080 Trio and had no issues back in June. Stop playing for a while then came back the other night and nothing but freezes. Like the others, DCS is the only game that does this. I play other graphic intensive games set on Ultra and absolutely no issues so it is DCS related. As I said, I was playing this game over the summer with the same GPU and no problems so whatever the problem is, it seems to be something that has changed in DCS.

If you have not already contact support with as much detail as possible

dcs.log and dxdiag

has anything changed in that time?

Windows updates ofcourse, but anything else? Antivirus change? new hardware added?

Im just trying to think outside the box at the moment.

Since this morning, when I launch DCS I see only a big black square on my monitor.....

I had seen this too!. Is your main memory sufficiently supplied with fresh air?. Maybe he gets too hot. I have 32 Gb ram in the computer ( 8x4 GB Quad Channel ). My problem was that I have a water cooler on the Cpu on it!. Since I cool the Rams now better, I have no more problems. I mean that it was too warm (Summertime).

Guys I had same issues you describe back in Dec off last year is when it started. Mine started out as exit to desktop when I click on fly in a mission. Over a period of two month it progress to black screen, then to computer shut down and restart, too complete shut down, and I had to push the power button too restart my computer. That went on for another month or so. I tested every thing in my computer, even to the point on complete tear down and putting it back to gather, having too reset my BIOS just to start my computer. Took it to computer repair with no luck. Finally after reading many post on the internet with simullur problem, and many suggesting that the power supply may be failing, even though my voltages at main connector were good and showed the same in the BIO I broke down and purchased a new ( power supply ) installed it, and all is well now.

Something too think about

Yes we have seen an increase in stuttering due to Malwarebytes, the exclusion of DCS from the real time scan helps

Hi FoxFire,

Thanks for suggestion,i had a GTX 980 before this graphic.By specs(for gtx 980) it consumes 165w and the RTX 2080 about 210w.I will buy new power supply( I'm currently using RaidMax 730w)and will let you know the results.

Thank you very much all for your help and commitment.

Well I had also a Gtx 980 with a 1200 watt power supply (for SLI). Now I have a Rtx 2080 Strix super oc. For me it was certainly not on the power supply. I guessed it was the ram. Idk.

The Black screen was like a G-LOC in game . The black square was there very fast and then gone again ( Photoshop Illustration ).

I only saw this in DCS. All other games ran without problems. It is strange that several people noticed.
