PC upgrade confused

Recommended Posts

dear all

here is my old pc >>> i5-3570 + GTX970

due to budget limit , i have decide to upgrade CPU or GPU, one of them

one is i5-10600K or R5-3600 another is waiting for RTX3060

which one will be a good choice?

thank you~

*play in 1920*1080P , no VR demand

The AMD ryzen 5 3600 has a pcie 4.0 bus support. Since the new nvidia cards will have the RX IO feature, you might as well maximize that feature with the ryzen 5 3600.

Also the new AMD Gen3 cpu are around the corner too so those could offer better speed too.

The PCI-E 4.0 for next gen GPUs is being blown out of proportion, IMO.

It's not expected to make any difference unless with something like the RTX3090 or the rumoured RTX3080Ti (TBA later), and maybe the RTX3080 (everyone waiting for tests).

What makes PCI-E 4.0 very interesting now is the larger bandwith and speeds for the new NVME storage with PCI-E 4.0 capabilities.

And for RTX IO, game developers will need to support it explicitly, which remains to be seen in something like DCS (unlikely to happen?). So, for now, that tech is just a pipe dream.

For DCS (and gaming in general), the Intel processors still have the advantage over Ryzen processors, as these still have issues with Infinity Fabric Latency and Bandwidth, as well as lower clocks.

So, if DCS is your main interest, and you want to have the best performance right now, Intel 10700K and 10600K are definitely the best choices.

If not in a hurry, then wait for the next AMD Ryzen series (October? November?) to see how they compare then.

I'm just guessing here mostly, but I think the 3090 would only manage to go near the limits for pci-e 3.0 (at 16 lanes) if you are intending to play at this new monitor tech of theirs at 340+ fps.

Most games have in-engine limitations at around 250 or less even.

And is really not an issue.

Just make sure you are running the GPU at 16x full lane utilisation, employing to many NVME's can trigger a downshift to 8x as well as running SLI.

But honestly SLI is dead and done now.

Bob I have 3x 970 evo plus drives in my x570 aorus master MB, 3900x, 2080ti. Should I be worried about having 3 NVMe drives bottlenecking me?

Well you can use ie. GPU-Z software to check what PCI-e speed your GPU is using.

Let me get this straight....

"due to budget limit..."

Currently i5 3570K + GTX 970

Jumping to an i7 10600K or R5 3600 (will require a complete new system) as will wanting to upgrade to RTX 3060.

Budgeting is NOT an option for you.

^^ This !

Remember 3rd gen i7 was DDR3 based, old chipset etc.. You need at least new DDR4 modules as well as a new Motherboard/chipset along with any CPU newer than yours.
