34'' Ultra Wide Monitors curved or not curved

Recommended Posts

Ok guys I have decided on a 34'' Monitor rather than to go the three monitor route, but how important is the curved issue ?.......so I'm asking advice here,do I go curved or not curved ?

Any help or advice would be richly appreciated thank you.

My advice would be to check them out in store, if you can. I'm down on the south coast so popped into local Novatech and was instantly sold on the curved (they had Elite running on it, which was cheating; it looked awesome!).

You do pay a premium for curved but I find it helps with viewing the extreme edges of the monitor, which for the most part are in your peripheral vision. The flat screens just felt awkward at 34".

Edit: just to add, I also recommend the 3440*1440 res at that size, over the 2560*1080. You'll make your GTX 1070 work for it's money but it's worth it; I also figured I'm more likely to upgrade my graphics card in future, so my hardware would grow into it.

Thanks for the top advice Tone71,you've definitely changed my mind re the 3440 * 1440 res, that makes sense, and I'm warming to a curved screen.

I also appreciate that opting for both of these key factors, will incur a bigger bill, but you only buy a monitor once in a blue moon, and this has to last,so I'll just have to dig deeper into my wallet, won't I ?

Technically, if deciding between two TN panels, the curved option *should* negate the color shifting effects experienced for off axis views angles. Especially with such a wide monitor, as the far edges of long flat screen may appear shift the color.

Though the significance of this may vary by maker, model, screen size and view angle.

Cool, nice one. I was never fully happy with my 27" monitor at 1080p and as the 34" ultrawide works out roughly the same height I figured I had to go 3440x1440. I find the curve also helps bring in the picture too, whereas the flat screen images seem to move away when you look toward the edges. Anyway, enjoy!

I was fortunate enough to get an xmas bonus last year which was spent on a Acer X34, despite the outragous cost which is hard to justify (cost a £1k) i can safely say its the best bit of tech i've ever purchased, no regrets whatsoever - if you can strech that far and are in the market for a curved ultra wide monitor then i highly recommend you take a look at one!

What FPS are you getting with that monitor and GTX 1070 combo?

I'm thinking of upgrading my screen and graphics combo, just want to know if the 1070 is good enough or would a 1080ti be better?

Cheers, R

I posted this vid of a free flight in Nevada back in January and was getting about 50-70 fps at that time (100+ looking down in cockpit but that wouldn't be an entirely accurate indication of performance!), with most settings on High:

Of course if you can afford a 1080ti I would go for that!

Awesome video Tone71, thanks for sharing.

I'm probably gonna go with Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming - there's a deal to be had on eBuyer.com puts them just a bit higher price than Ethereum hiked 1070s

I think the 1080Ti is a little too much for my budget

Hey Basco1, I just bought one with my first build and like yourself I too was thinking about a matrix setup but now I'm so happy with my new screen, it really is beautiful and a great 100Hz refresh. I have a few pics of it in my album here, trust me once you get one of these screens, you'll never look back man and after a little while you don't even novice the curve. Mine is 34" ultra wide and yea it virtually cost me half what I paid for the build in total but it was so worth it and for me prob still cheaper than a three screen setup. Anyway, that's my personal opinion, they truly are a magnificent panel and would compliment and enhance any good rig especially what we use them for. Cheers mate, G

I've just taken delivery of the Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming, and have ordered the Asus 34" PG348Q to go with it - gets delivered next week!

So far with my 1080p screen, the performance is amazing and I can't wait to experience Ultrawide 100Hz G-sync!

What a beast!! I read the stand was big, and my desk is just big enough to take it though the screen is now much closer to my face - and my Warthog throttle and joystick - than I'd like so some desk mods are in order.

But the Asus ROG PG348Q is indeed a lovely screen, and the immersion you get from the ultrawide is very complimented by the very gentle curve that puts the peripheral vision at just the right place so it feels good. I did wonder if I'd feel sick but happy to say all good!

Anyone thinking about it, get it! It's expensive yes, but so is a decent 4K TV

Reflections! ...it's everywhere!

Just kidding. But still - check if curved one have good screen-anti-reflections coating. I saw opinions that curved mons tend to reflect more then regular one.

This is true. I have both and the curved definitely reflects lights in the background more.

I had to move a light because of it :) I would go curved anyway.

In DCS I use a Rift though.
