Plausible scenarios (missions) in Normandy

1 If you can accept Spitfire IX earlier , you can recreate dogfights Spitfire vs Bf109 in Southern England area. 1940 -1941.

 

2. Ignore Allied airfields in Normandy. Recreate ground attacks against transport with some dogfights. Remember that Luftwaffe was non existent close to D-Day. Spring 1944. We need Allied light bombers such as B-25 to spice up

 

3. Eight AirForce B-17 high altitude (over flight level 30). formations with P-51 escorts. Inbound Germany. One reason was to attract German fighters and decimate them. Fierce dogfights P-51 vs Dora. Spitfire LF (low flight) does not belong up here.

 

4. Single B-17 stragglers returning to England in all altitudes. Protect them or shoot them down. (1943 early 1944).

 

5. Post D-day. Sorry no dogfights (Maybe up in north east) Hurtgen/Ardennes. Ground attack Caen (conquered august) supply and reinforcements coming from east.

If you can ignore the French airfields (And German models), you can pretty much recreate the entire pre-day campaign, with attacks against logistics and infrastructure, escorts and fighter sweeps. Just got a very long stretch of channel to cross. (And need drop tanks for spits)

A weather balloon can reach even higher altitudes.. but you don't wanna fight in one ;)

The difference between them it's their purpose, and with that came the engine modifications.. Merlin 66 vs Merlin 70, 5000m vs 7000m for the second stage charger.. LF was developed as a fighter to match 190A at all altitudes, HF was used more like a high altitude interceptor..

The DCS Mk IX LF actually performs very well up to 32000 ft (almost 10000m) and even above, it can do above 400 mph at that altitude. It has also the best climbrate of all DCS warbirds at these altitudes, ~2200 ft/min or above 11 m/s. The DCS LF even outperforms the HF tests I know of in level speed at altitude, climbrate is pretty equal.

Just reading the Anthony Beevor book on D-Day and there were lots of missions, for all the aircraft we have, sort of.

 

There were recon missions, fighter sweeps, ground attack, and heavy bomber runs(with the objective of causing shell holes on the beaches, sadly they missed)

 

Now the issue we will have is we have the wrong Focke Wulfe and need the only allied plane, at low altitudes, that could catch them the Typhoon, though it played a major role in air to ground, the feared "Jabo"

 

Then we have the break out attempts after the landing, with the infamous pre-Cobra bombing mission that managed to kill an American General, the only one to die during the entire war killed by friendly fire.

 

With the DCS engine you could build one hell of a game on just this piece of real-estate.

Channel Stop – Air operations intended to stop enemy shipping passing through the Strait of Dover.[1]

 

Circus – daytime bomber attacks with fighter escorts against short range targets, to occupy enemy fighters and keep them in the area concerned.[1]

 

Flower – Counter-air patrols in the area of enemy airfields to preventing aircraft from taking off and attacking those aircraft that succeeded.[1]

 

Gardening – mine-laying operations.

 

Instep – missions to restrict attacks on Coastal Command aircraft by maintaining a presence over the Western Approaches.[1]

 

Intruder – offensive patrols to destroy enemy aircraft over their own territory, usually carried out at night.[1]

 

Jim Crow – coastal patrols to intercept enemy aircraft crossing the British coastline; originally intended to warn of invasion in 1940.[1]

 

Kipper – patrols to protect fishing boats in the North Sea against air attack.[1]

 

Mahmoud – sorties flown by de Havilland Mosquitoes equipped with rear-facing radar; when an enemy aircraft was detected a 180° turn enabled an attack.[1]

 

Mandolin – attacks on enemy railway transport and other ground targets.

 

Noball – attacks on V-weapons launch sites and related targets.[1]

 

Ramrod – short range bomber attacks to destroy ground targets, similar to Circus attacks.[1]

 

Ranger – freelance flights over enemy territory by units of any size, to occupy and tire enemy fighters.[1]

 

Rhubarb – fighter or fighter-bomber sections, at times of low cloud and poor visibility, crossing the English Channel and then dropping below cloud level to search for opportunity targets such as railway locomotives and rolling stock, aircraft on the ground, enemy troops, and vehicles on roads.[1][2]

 

Roadstead – dive bombing and low level attacks on enemy ships at sea or in harbour.[1]

 

Rodeo – fighter sweeps over enemy territory.[1]

 

Rover – armed reconnaissance flights with attacks on opportunity targets.[1]

 

Scramble – fast take-off and climb to intercept enemy aircraft.

 

 

 

I would love to do a Noball mission over channel ;-) but we need V1 german weapon for that.

Not a moan, but technically on the current map, the airfields that are placed put the age of the Allied progress at minimum 17th August (Meutis -A17 opening date) I might have missed a later one.

 

By 17th August, the Falaise pocket was collapsing with a third of the German forces escaping on this day to East of the Seine, putting the front line east of Caen. http://www.dday-overlord.com/eng/17_august_1944.htm

 

So if you want anything remotely realistic, your air attacks need to be focusing on supporting those pushes.

 

Removal of those airbases and dynamic maps need to be a thing from ED and I reckon it's achievable, but to what cost in development, I do not know. I've been asking for years for moveable airfields, the grass strips remain a teaser entry in the ME and still this limits our attempts at realism.
